In this video, I will take a close look at the weapon that has helped American Ben Shelton make a steep climb up the ATP rankings in 2023 - his massive serve.
The American is a left-hander so he starts with a natural advantage, as big-serving southpaws have historically been tricky to contend with - just ask anybody who has ever faced Goran Ivanisevic!
Like Ivanisevic, Shelton can create incredible pace with his serve, but that isn’t all that makes his serve so great. His technique allows him to create huge spin and movement, which makes his ball even more difficult to read for returners.
It’s an incredible advantage to be so dominant from the service stripe, and Shelton uses that advantage to dominate his service games and grow his confidence in matches.
Today we will look at the following elements of Shelton’s world-class serve:
1/ His extremely simple motion
2/ His load, and how early and how much he bends his knees
3/ The upward thrust he produces
4/ His trophy position with the dominant arm very low
5/ How much time he spends in the air and where he lands
6/ The crazy spin rate he creates and why it’s so difficult to return
