i’m really scared i was taking tylenol pm like 3-5 times a week to help my insomnia it contains diphenhydramine which is basically benadryl. now when i take any medication my body reacts to it negatively i feel faint, difficulty focusing, chest discomfort. i have finally realized what the problem is & i stopped taking it completely. just hope my body goes back to normal.
update looks like the diphenhydramine has given me lymphedema. i changed my diet i only eat lean meats fruits and vegetables along with getting a good night’s sleep helped my focus come back.
Yes I started using it to sleep for shift work. I didn't have medical insurance and I knew something was wrong long before shift work made everything much much worse. But I had bills to pay and it helped me cope with some serious personal problems. 20 years and the Benadryl hangover basically exists every single day I just rarely notice or care that much anymore. Long term side effects I suffer are: Renal damage Heart damage Memory loss (this is probably the most noticable) Tremors Loss of Balance Panic/Anxiety Dental damage
Sorry, to hear about all these adverse effects. It takes a lot of courage to write and speak about this on social media warning others about the long term side effects of Benadryl.
I have taken it as a sleep aid for a long time and have never had an issue? As it's the same ingredient as zquil i haven't experienced anything different then taking zquil. I don't the the liquid form but the dollar tree brand since it's much cheaper and has the same mg.
I haven't had any of these side effects, but what I foound is that you end up controlling your sleep schedule by relying on it. So it screws up your sleep schedule naturally done by your body.
I was addicted to diphenhydramine for 5 years. For the most part I took 300mg 3 times a day. So many things happen that were bad. My eyesight got blurry while on it. I eventually needed to get glasses. I enjoyed the sedative feeling. I rarely took enough to hallucinate but when I did it was mostly thinking I saw a spider. I didn't make me fall asleep at that dose but sometimes I would sleep 15 hours. I would get itchy all over my body. Its taken me to years of working a 12 step program to get off it. Also memory was affected. I could barely follow the thread of conversations. I've got 1 month clean now. I want back and fourth with it once getting 3 months. Just don't misuse or abuse this drug is my advice.
@etan racc - I am pretty much in the same boat that you were. Is there any possibility of us talking, as I want to get off this crap, but I don't know how I'm going to sleep. I started off at a low dose, but then it went up ridiculously high. I would appreciate if there was some way I could talk to you, because I'm starting to freak out here a bit. Thank you, and congratulations for getting off this crap
I've gotten high off Benadryl it was trippy and interesting, but it did change the way my heart works, it'll pump slow and then spike up and go slow again. I also have a hard time focusing when people are talking to me.
I didn’t read all the comments here but I’ll share my experiences with it just incase. I’ve done dph about 6 times total. 300, 360, 600, 900, 900, 800 mg. below 600 doesn’t do that much in my experience but especially once you get to 900, shit gets awful. There is so many nightmare effects. You will hear, see, feel, smell, things that are not there. I was yelling at a picture on my tv because I thought it was a person in my room who wasn’t supposed to be here. I saw my dead bunny in my arms even tho there was nothing, I had full conversations with people who weren’t there like outside my room or outside my window. There is much more side effects than that at high doses and none are pleasurable. I had to stop because the people I live with were worried I had schizophrenia because I was yelling at nothing all night long. It’s not fun or healthy to be on.
Very informative and a little scary with those side effects. We take for granted these over the counter medications, forgetting they can be seriously harmful.
I took 200 milligrams of diphenhydramine every day for 6 months. I found that after I developed a tolerance to the diphenhydramine it would still work really well if I mixed it with 15 milligrams of melatonin. The only negative effect it had on me is that diphenhydramine doesn't have any effect on me now. Even after years of not taking it if I took 200 milligrams it wouldn't have any effect on me whereas before that would've knocked me out for 10+ hours.
I've been taking doxylamine (similar to Benardryl - sedating antihistamine) for a few years for sleep/night anxiety. Because you develop tolerance, I end up taking around 4 x Kirkland Sleep Aids (100mg). Naughty, I know. I have reduced to 0-1 per night this week with the view to stopping now. Sleep has definitely been patchier, but I wake up a lot fresher and more alert. I advise anyone to not be scared and just cut them down (then out). It might mean less sleep but there are definitely immediate up sides in the morning --- and as for dementia --- yikes, not worth it.
As someone who recreationally did this drug, i want to tell you there’s always someone worse, i used to take doses up to 800mg of benadryl (roughly 40) when i was 13. This is EXTREMELY re’tarde:d of me because ive most likely given myself dementia later in life. Ive been sober for roughly 4 or so months now.
Nice video, glad I stumbled upon this channel. As a fellow health care provider, I am glad that you channel provides a balanced view on various medication- will follow with great intent. New sub here and glad to support a fellow small YTuber.
Benadryl makes my whole body twitchy. It's like restless leg syndrome but everywhere. Oddly enough it only affects me like that half the time. The other half of the time it knocks me out. I only use it now if I have forgotten bug repellent and have over 30 mosquito bites.
I have taken Benydryl most of my adult life, I am now 66 and I take 3 at night most nights, for sleep and allergy relief. I do not take it all day every day, but I do take it at night due to severe allergic reactions. My memory is not bad, and I can sleep 5-6 hours straight, which is just enough for me to function fairly well.
@@ThinkYourHealth yeah, that is unless your prescriber is outright lying to you and denying the reality of the potential dangers these have i.e the entire field of psychiatry
My husband once told me that he'd heard a story from his mom. She'd taken Benadryl when she was in college, and I was told that it made her laugh for half an hour, cry for half an hour, and sleep for a day and a half, which is why she can no longer take antihistamines.
She must have been taking huge doses, dph is a deliriant which probably explains the mood swings. To have that kinda immediate side effect action she probably took waayyyyyyyyy to much. A regular dose like one pill cannot do that. You should ask her she legit or prolly took like 10. Also tell her to never take that much again
Glad it was helpful! Many medications can cause serious side effects in older adults... medications have to be dose adjusted, some dosed depending on the kidney function.
I had a severe attack of A-fib after taking Benadryl several nights in a go. I struggled for 5 hours and after thinking I needed to think of what triggered the attack, i read about the blocking of potassium. I ate 2 bananas and i recovered soon after.
❤ As an adult over 70. I had been using 1/2 Ibuprofen PM as a sleep aid. Recently, I tried it as a sinus drying out agent in Benadryl. The Diphenhydramine gave me some intensely weird, nightmarish dreams and my balance was WAY off 18 hours later. It is scary stuff. Almost a high but not like a high quality blended indigo. // In the future, from this video and others, I never plan on using Diphenhydramine in any manner, except for awful travel situations …. such as a downtown New York hotel in the winter or someplace in Ohio in most seasons.
As a 14 year old who did this horrible drug recreationally, i wish i never did. I’d stay away from benadryl as it can raise your risk of dementia by a LOT, and since i used during the time my brain was developing my retar’ded ass most likely has alzhiemers later in life.
@@disgustingratsewer I want you to know that you’re going to be okay. It only raises the risk. Sure, that is a big risk to take. But you’re off it now (hopefully) and you’re gonna be okay.
I have been taking one everyday for my allergies but I only take one or half, I don’t want to take it anymore I don’t wanna depend on it to get rid of my allergies momentarily
I take 1 to 1.5 for long stretches and I swear it gets me seriously depressed. I sleep great, but wake up groggy/foggy and get super depressed by the afternoon. Can’t say it’s 💯 the Benadryl but certainly feels like it
ive been taking diphenhydramine to go to sleep for a week straight now and i built up a tolerance. I got scared i noticed how i wasnt getting sleepy and searched up the harm it does to the liver and organs :( i occasionally took it when i needed to go to sleep last year too. I poured out the sleep aid tonight and i will not be consuming it ever.
Thank you so much. Anticholinergics are a very steep slope, first you take a small amount then it gets bigger snd bigger, then next thing you know you’re taking almost 2000mg a week.
Thanks for watching.I would advice that your fiancé take a less sedating anti-histamine with a more favorable side effect profile such as Cetirizine , Loratadine or Fexofenadine .( I have not included the brand names, however, you can do a simple google search to figure that out 😀)Of course, before doing so, talk to your Doctor or Pharmacist as they would know his medical history.Good luck!
About a month ago I had a bad allergic cough and took Benadryl (diphenhydramine), about 100 mg per day for six days. Within a couple of days I noticed I had increasing urinary difficulties accompanied by mild edema (swelling of feet, ankles and lower thighs). I stopped taking the drug and the issues are only now slowly resolving themselves. I am 63 and it's obvious I shouldn't have take the drug. Live and learn, I guess.
Sounds familiar… I am also 63 and was taking it off and on for a stomach virus and to get some sleep… Seems to have a bad reaction on me now… Didn’t take it every day but maybe four times a week
I know the risks but im dealing with severe itching, nausea, dizziness, motion sickness and insomnia for 3.5 years now. Nothing else has helped these symptoms. I've seen over 34 specialista and been prescribed numerous meds to try. Sigh...its either Benadryl or begging for death
It gives me restless leg syndrome and not just in my legs. More difficult to urinate. My chest hair follicles hurt when I lay down ro sleep. Does not happen every night. I only take 12.5 mg as I have been reducing it. Probably gives me other problems that I've not linked to the drug.
I used to take 18 Tylenol PM caplets every day. Now I take 10 Diphenhydramine gelcaps (25mg) a day for sleep. I used to "hear people whispering" when I first started taking it when I worked in Retail when I had to close the mall store I worked at then had to wake up early to open up the store. Sometimes when the 10 gelcaps dont make me sleepy, I take an extra 5 of them just to feel sleepy.
Always check dude effects of medications. Especially if you are on other medications because of drug drug interactions. Especially long term use of Benadryl have these side effects. I rarely use Benadryl with my older patients unless there is a very good reason to use it. I must say you look younger in your videos.
Whats the difference between diphenhydramine hydrochloride and benadryl please. I take 2 50mg of sleepeze with 800mg of ibuprofen daily. I like the calming affect it gives. Is it dangerous to do this. I've been doing this for about 3 years. Although I'm starting to get headaches Any advice. Much appreciated
If I feel like I have a cold coming on, I take benadryl to dry up the cold, so I can go to work. Eventually, it seems to take away the cold symptoms and help a lot. I had no idea of the side effects. Thanks for the informative video!!👍👍👍
I need to know more about the effect on the heart. My very-healthy senior aunt died of heart failure, and afterwards in her house I saw she had been taking benadryl.
Been using for 2 years now, heart racing, memory issues can’t focus blurry vision. I’m in my 20s it’s hard to get off it gets rid of the itching and sneezing and throat tightness I get 🤷♀️
Zyrtec is a less sedating anti-histamine and preferred compared to Benadryl. Zyrtec is a second generation anti-histamine meaning a " newer model".Sleepiness can be still a side effect, however milder than Benadryl. It works well for allergies and hives. The only 3rd Generation anti-histamine OTC is Allegra, however, although supposedly less sedating, Zyrtec appears more effective than Allegra for hives and allergies. The other question to ask is why you broke out in hives. You can use the anti-histamine to help with you symptoms and it should help.If you do have repeated episodes of hives without a known cause ( such as poison ivy) you can always get skin tested by an Allergist to figure out what you are exactly allergic to.
Thank you for your detailed reply. I’ve always had excema or rash my whole life , but for the last 3 months I got these hives. All over and driving me crazy. I’ve bern to many drs & had tests but no one has an answers. Last one , did blood tests - not viral, blood good. She says i have diopathic urticaria. But i think it’s still an allergy.
I've been taking 5-6 50mg unisom brand a solid 7 years and am completely reliant on them. Tried tapering, stopping etc but can't. When I attempt to, the strangest thing is that I can't stay awake as to before I was bordering insomniac.
Dude, just use opiates to go to sleep at that point, if you get addicted to those ATLEAST its pleasurable. Anticholinergic drugs like benadryl arent even enjoyable, i was a victim of its powers and was an addict to it for about a year taking roughly 1500-2000mg a week sometimes. Ive been sober for 4 or so months now and hope the best for you, what i did to get off benadryl was to use claratin, that way you still get the symptom relief of unisom withdrawl whilst being sober.
@@disgustingratsewer there's s*** that's the only reason it is enjoyable is because I am on opiates mixing with them if not it is absolutely horrific it's just being wired without being enjoyable
@@disgustingratsewer and withdrawals are not enjoyable I rather be at asleep because I don't have Benadryl then be sick pissing and s*** and everything else and just absolutely miserable cuz I don't have my medicine
Riaz Meghji Like with all medications whether OTC or prescription talk to your pharmacist or Doctor about the most common side effects and drug drug interactions.
The effects of Benadryl last for about 4-6 hours. As repeated doses of a drug are administered its plasma concentration builds up and reaches what is known as a steady state. This is when the amount of drug in the plasma has built up to a concentration level that is therapeutically effective and as long as regular doses are administered to balance the amount of drug being cleared the drug will continue to be active. The time taken to reach the steady state is about five times the half life of a drug. Drugs like Benadryl have a half life of about 7-12 hours.Once you have stopped regular use of the drug, the drug would be out within a couple of days.
I agree with you on Benadryl. My life is miserable during the spring because of everything that is blooming. I tried Claritin and Zyrtec for a few months at a time and they didn’t work. Benadryl is the only thing that seems to work. I may visit an allergist to figure out why my body goes into hyperdrive this time of year.
@@ThinkYourHealth hi doctor , I use Benadryl allergy relief with Acrivastine ,for my chronic hives allergy , I have to take it quite often every week whenever an attack happens I’m concerned now 🤔
It's an anticholinergic, it essentially inhibits your body's reactionary reflexes, such as allergic response, motion sickness, pyramidal side effects due to other medications, lots of stuff that you really don't want to experience, however there are reactionary responses you really need, such as memory retention. If your popping those little pink pills every 4 to 6 hours for... ever. You've completely inhibited your ability to interpret information and your long term retention of new information is seriously compromised. An occasional dose for a seriously uncomfortable situation IS NOT GOING TO MAKE YOU BRAIN DEAD. It's going to make your brain unaware?/Not care about any problems THAT DAY. It's when the next day there's a problem, and again, into habitual usage that will make your subconscious nonobservant of...everything. Just doesn't matter. As a treatment for an urgent situation, its a God send. Nobody's daily life is THAT urgent.
Great video I will be subbing, i recently bought some nytol diphenhydremen as a way to combat both my eczma and insomnia caused by eczma, do you recommend i still try this out?
Thanks for the sub! Diphenhydramine if used for longer periods of time have side effects and like I said not recommended for long term use in Insomnia.Treatment for eczema is 1) Know what the triggers are ( eg cold or dry environments, sweating, exposure to detergents, stress, anxiety) 2)keep you skin hydrated such as using emollients.Apply an emollient immediately after bathing or showering to prevent your skin from drying out as a result of water evaporation. 3) Hot baths or showers usually lasting longer than 10-15 minutes can dry the skin 4)wet dressings can help sooth the itching 4) there are safer antihistamine to use and you can discuss that with your provider 5) your provider might a short course of a local steroid to help relieve symptoms.Having said this the most important points are points 1 and 2.
It was working for me for my sleep maintenance insomnia. I was taking half a tablet (25mg) diphenhydramine a night. Now when I take it, it does not seem to work. What would you suggest? I can revert to Doxylamine 25mg, a night. Or I can not take any tablets try my best to relax and hopefully go back to sleep when I wake up. Appreciate your comments, I'm 33 years old.
I am now 72. I used to take OTC Benedryl to help me sleep. I was having symptoms (side effects) from it although I did not realize this until I ran out of the bottle of Benedryl that I was taking, i SAW SOMETHING SHINY IN THE BOTTOM OF THE BOTTLE (LIKE A TINY ROD). It was then I noticed that the bottle had a large label wrapped around it. The label said that the Benedryl contained of all things ALUMINUM. I ceased taking Benedryl altogehter that day. The symptoms stopped the following day.
The Benadryl I take is for when I lie down because then I start choking on Flem draining to my throat and I cough and can’t sleep at all. What else can I do. It’s been years.
I have been taking Benadryl for 20 years (averaging 250 mg to sleep) and I wished I had NEVER started doing this because it's basically the hardest drug I've even tried to quit (I mean I was able to quit opioids after years of addiction but Benadryl... no.) I have renal damage, heart damage, and my serotonin production will never recover.
Reign, thank you for sharing your experience, especially for people who are using this drug as a sleeping aid.Like I said in this video and anyone reading this comment it SHOULD NOT BE USED S A SLEEPING AID, especially in older adults. Please do seek the help from an addiction specialist so that you can be titrated off the medication.
@@ThinkYourHealth I have tried to get an effective treatment plan worked out with doctors and therapist. But the problem is I have SPS. When you put Benadryl addiction next to a neuromuscular disorder, people don't seem to really take it all that seriously. We've done all the prescribed sleep aids and they only make the SPS worst and they don't actually make me all that sleepy. I have to maintain a sleep schedule to prevent the SPS fatigue spasms. Doctors get to the point that they can't actually give me any other options. This is way more complicated than people think. I've had people laugh at me when they find out about it... People just don't understand OTCs are addictive especially if you have and underlying condition that you can't afford treatment for. I hate this part of my life, literally hate it.

I have noticed that both Visteral and Benadryl affect my thinking....Benadryl makes me nervous and Visteral gives me negative thoughts the next morning after i take it .....it depresses me and gives me diahrheea or constipation what are the alternatives for sleep?
Thanks for sharing your experiences with both drugs.Since I am not your Doctor and not privy to your medical history and what other medications you are on won't be able to give you advice on other medical alternatives.I do recommend milk and honey as this combination taken about 30 minutes before bedtime helps with sleep. Here are two studies you can read regarding this: 1) www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S2405457718303061 2) pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22869830/. I would revisit the combination of Vistaril & Benadryl with your Doctor as using Benadryl together with Vistaril may increase side effects such as drowsiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, confusion, memory problems, constipation.
The Beers Criteria is a leading source of expert information about potentially inappropriate medications in older adults. Older adults per WHO definition are usually defined as above the age of 60 .Certain medications can have they can have adverse effects in older adults.Providers can easily overlook misuse of these drugs, as many are readily available to patients who purchase over the counter (OTC). As an example, Beers criteria identifies first-generation antihistamines’ ability to block receptors and increase the risks of dementia in older adults. Having Benadryl in a household is relatively common-yet, its long-term effects are not usually a consideration.

I think you have to be disciplined with and have the right attitude about your medicines; it's kind of like hygiene or housework: without adequate and applicable regulation, they are potential weeds in your life. You have to control them as far as not to overdose nor should you take them every time you have a minor problem, either. That's what I try to live by and--if I take some for 2 episodes in a row--I feel let down...
Thanks for sharing your clinical encounter. Now what to look out for.Sleep hygiene and sleeping habits are important but require time, routine and structure.

What would be an over counter med for itching without those lifeless side effects?
I used to use large doses of dimenhydrinate (essentially the same thing, plus a mild stimulant) as a recreational deleriant. This was mostly in my late teens and early 20s - i'm 36 now for reference. I've gotta say, it's pretty much the least recreational psychoactive drug i've ever done. Especially the gross hangover the next day is just awful - but while you're "high" you dont even realize it, you just talk to people who aren't there, smoke cigarettes that then disappear cus you hallucinated them etc. - they're "true hallucinations", not the colourful patterns something like LSD will produce. There's simply no way to seperate these hallucinations from reality. I have some stories that are equal part terrifying and hilarious. Delirants are not fun drugs, I do not suggest them to anybody. It's also worth noting that I probably would have never done such a stupid drug if better, more recreational - and far safer - drugs like LSD or mushrooms had been available to me. Drug prohibition only makes drug use more dangerous.

Yes, it is and can be used for itching, however should not be used permanently.More important is to figure out what is causing the itching and treat the underlying cause rather than just symptomatic treatment.
From about 19-21 I took this almost every night because I wanted it to help me sleep, most of the time it wouldn’t help, when I took about it always felt like I had to pee but couldn’t ever empty my bladder fully, I woudl get blurry vision if I took it and couldn’t sleep, once I got an physically exhausting daylight schedule job I was able to sleep perfectly without it, though now I’m on night shifts occasionally I take it paired with melatonin… I need to stop
More than 700mg, which is several times more than the the recommended dose, may lead to a state of delirium, hallucinations, and other overdose symptoms as described in the video. The half life for the drug for the average healthy adult is about 6-12 hours. That means it takes 6 to 12 hours after taking Benadryl, for half the drug to be eliminated from the body. Within two days, the drug should be completely gone from the body.( I am talking about only a single dose).I am providing a link to an article which shows a dose dependent toxicity of diphenhydramine (Benadryl):pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11204550/. My advice would be you discuss this with your primary care provider and they can do some testing looking at blood tests and imaging of liver and kidney to see if there has been any irreversible damage as the toxicity depends on several factors such is age, kidney function, body mass, drug drug interaction etc.
