It's no secret we like benchmade. We've been a big fan of the Benchmade Leuku and Puuko and of course the Bugout. So naturally when they have something new... we'd love to check it out. But our main focus is always honesty. the good and the bad. Recently benchmade launched their anonimus and labeled it as a survival and bushcraft knife. Something we'll have to see for ourselves of course. So today we put the Anonimus through its paces.

same, I've been a dedicated camper/hiker for all my life and no joke, I've never carried more than a multi tool and a folding knife. I've never gone out of my way to find a quality brand, fixed blade or otherwise. so technically, this is me doing research for my first decent fixed blade, and I'm honestly a little worried I'm gonna slice my finger for being a moron somehow. so that finger guard is looking great to me too. if anyone has any general use knife suggestions for under $250-300 , that can take a goddamn beating (because I promise I will not take care of the knife like an enthusiast would) please let me know. the world of knives is getting real complicated, real quick.

To my knowledge its also designed for "tactical discretion", thin for a low profile and the guard is there to keep your hand from sliding onto the blade when stabbing from an icepick grip. Its a security for the fingers, many who look for military use in their knives tend to want a knife that wont "bite" them in a close quarters skirmish. Common everyday clothing offers more piercing resistance than most assume. This is why daggers where preferred by shock troopers such as the Arditi because they had a dedicated stabbing point specifically to increase the chances of getting through jackets, vests, armor etc. They all(daggers) had cross guards specifically to prevent overpenetration(without a guard overpenetration can make the blade hard to retrieve in the middle of combat) and to give the hand a brace and guard to keep their hands from sliding up the blade when the fabric is relatively resistant to piercing and cuts(Silk is notorious for it and it was often used in layered armor specifically because of this). Essentially if fabric pushes back you will be glad you had that barrier to not only protect you but to help apply more pressure without increased risk of losing your fingers to your own knife. This isnt a dagger obviously but neither is "the KABAR" yet it has the same feature for the same reasons and it is not uncommon on combat, survival and war knives to have a guard just like this though they often only use the single guard rather than the crossguard specifically for more comfort doing camp tasks which in certain branches of the military you will be using bushcrafting and general survival skills. So having a blade that has a built in barrier to protect the user from slicing up their fingers during combat or generally in the field is often preferred. Many much older knives and daggers did this too for the exact same reason, user safety and practicality in a fight. Im not into "Tacticool" stuff or mall ninja stuff, I just grew up loving historical swords/swordsmanship/martial arts and shifted to knives. There is a book done by a man named Fairbairn who taught a number of Allied countries soldiers during WW1 and WW2 in knife and hand to hand combat. His art and philosophy is known by two names, "gutter fighting" and "Defendu"(No Im not joking), his methods were for lack of a better word, merciless. You may have seen the dagger known as the "Fairbairn Sykes" dagger and that is the same Fairbairn who wrote the books and that blade he co-designed for the war. That Knife also has a crossguard because even with a finer point the blade could still struggle to stab through heavy wool or thick leather and the guard is there to better ensure the weapon is not a danger to the wielder. A commando whos fingers are ribbons after their hand slid up the slick handle on a stab is going to struggle to use his rifle or hold any weapon so those little guards are there to prevent that. TLDR: 1. The guard is for user safety in combat/stabbing tasks, this is why the KABAR has it and same for most historical and modern daggers. 2. Anonimus is likely referring to its "low profile" making it easier to conceal and carry 3. Most Benchmades are to some extent modern tactical/survival hence "anything you can throw at it" includes combat and sliced fingers on your own blade is extremely inconvenient especially if the knife failed to penetrate the clothing/armor of the person you have now sufficiently pissed off with your attempted attack. Side note: Heard you guys once call the fuller a "blood groove", thats actually an urban myth, its called a fuller and has been used for a long time as a means of lightening the blade in a controlled manner without compromising the blades integrity and also adjusting the balance, it has been used in machetes, daggers and swords for a very long time. It has nothing to do with pressure, suction or the blade getting stuck in the target. It can and is used to shift the weight of the blade further towards the point for better chopping tasks depending on the location and depth of the fuller or it is used like in some of the old MK2 US fighters(not all were made by Kabar and there were multiple versions of the MK2, the USMC version is just the one most people are familiar with) with the fuller being much larger but less deep to give it a more uniform lightweight balance for better agility in the hand. I believe the the fuller is as a functional(not just aesthetic) feature that is at least as old as medieval times. Thanks for doing a vid on this knife, I was very curious about it as I love the Adamas but wanted something with a handle and not just a skeleton style blade.

Great to read there's more people more into the history of knives and know their stuff. I agree with all you say and it makes sense Benchmade had this in mind. It still does not explain the jimping but that's more a fashion thing to give it a bushcraft look. I personally HATE jimping. I can live with a very mild jimping but agressive jimping is a big NO for me. I have no experience with this steel and for this price I probably won't. The handle probably has a little to much texture for prolonged use cutting wood but the traction again helps when stabbing. So indeed more a do it all 'soldiers' knife and in that role (and besides the jimping) it all makes sense.
@neonsamurai1348

I agree with your assessment, though I wonder why this knife is being advertised as a "survival/wilderness" knife by Benchmade when it clearly isn't designed to be one. I wish they would give the adamas a good and proper handle too, rather than having to weave paracord on it.

This video highlights two really important points.1) Buy a knife that meets your specific needs - the Anonimus isn't a dedicated bush/wood/survival knife. Yes it can do these things but it also has a military/tactical focus which influences the design. This is why is performed well in some of the tasks & not so good in others. As a military field knife this would be excellent. 2) It's not just about the steel but also the heat treat and edge treatment. CruWear is a great steel and Benchmade have extracted the best from it.

Yeah, the puuko version was nice but the heat treat for the 3V was soft but the leuko seemed to have fixed the heat treat issue and the blade geo is something special how the grind tapers. Looks like a brilliant cutter also those handles are under rated despite being budget. From a purely practical POV those synthetic rubber type handles are superior to typical hard materials like G10. I think its a brilliant knife. If I didn't already have several knives in that class I would choose it over just about anything as a user fixed blade for general outdoor use.

@@Piersoloutdoors I own both a Benchmade 202 Leuku and a Bark River Aurora in 3V, the cru-wear. The cru-wear holds an edge about the same as the 3V, which makes paying for it as an upgrade over Bark River’s 3v kind of pointless. It could be seen as a minor downgrade as you also give up some toughness. (Unless you prefer Cru Wear for sharpening reasons). I may be blaspheming here, But I actually like the leuku better than the Aurora at the moment. I like the handle better, as well as the weight ( I was dumb and got an aurora in G10).

I personally want to thank Martin for gracefully taking the egg to the face. I would have been unhappy but he seemed to take it in the spirit of the goofy quality of this show, and it made me laugh while still thinking that I would not have reacted so well. Both of you actually do a lot to keep things light-hearted and entertaining as well as informative and full of discussion. It's a great balance. Regarding the knife, I have some issue with the half guard being there, as well. I have a knife of a similar design and the guard gives me confidence for push cutting away from myself but not for cutting on a cutting board as you mentioned. I am surprised at the notion that the choil is intended for fire starting, why not just use the spine? Choils seem more for providing access to the edge for sharpening and sometimes as a place for your forefinger when choking up on the blade for fine work. But Martin had superior technique ideas so maybe there's merit to this use with a firesteel. As much as jimping impairs some kinds of grips, I think it really can improve others, especially when your hands are wet. Perhaps it's terrible for bushcrafting but good for other kinds of knife use such as skinning and food prep.

If you like Benchmade, you have to test their Hunter series (like the hidden canyon, wich is one of the best-looking blade out there). S90V is a badass steel and there are not so many knives with it, and it may be the best overall for processing animals. Butt in order to do so, you may have to butcher a boar or a deer. Now that would add a lot of interest to your channel. And speaking of hunting, Dawson make a ton of supersteel knives worth speaking about.

For bush craft/camping seems like a good, but expensive option. I'd want it to be thicker if intended as a true survival type knife personally, but perhaps that "super steel" is plenty tough at that width.
@johnsmithfakename8422
@johnsmithfakename8422 Год назад
There are two things that really take away the "Bushcraft" use of this knife. That "nail" like protrusion, and the choil. That choil takes away the best mechanical leverage point of bushcraft knives, and that nail is too artistic for a simple tool. In my subjective opinion The benchmade 162's template should have been used, maybe even give it a polymer/kydex sheathe, and thin the blade stock to 0.125 inch (1/8 inch) (3mm).

Practical, semi-tactical, conservative loadout, durable enough for reasonable self-reliance, good materials, workmanship, etc. That said - ergos can often be compromised for this genre, that guard is way too proud, and maybe this knife has too many little things (features) going on vs. simplicity.

I think Spyderco makes knives, like the Waterway or Perrin Street Bowie, that’ll do everything this knife does better and for less money. The LC200N and VG-10 won’t hold an edge as long, but they’ll cut really aggressively for a bit with a nice coarse edge and have their own advantages over Cru-wear. LC200N is particularly tough despite being practically immune to rust.
@Dynotop1a
@Dynotop1a 2 года назад
There’s also some discontinued and upcoming Spyderco’s that would be competitive if available now.

@@mxnxexpxtxrx4392 Cause as a relatively new steel. Its not necessarily perfected and there could be a recall on what happened to the magnacut steel after the air bubble breakage from DBKs video. Especially with Bark River. Factory big names like Benchmade wouldnt go out of their way to put out such a reletively new steel even with all the testings just yet. They are a massive company. And needs to be 100 percent certain they could master dealing with such a steel at a high rate of production. Not to mention I wouldnt crap on all other knife steels just because of Magnacut. I live in severe high humidity that rust knives easily and still my Benchmade Adamas Cru-wear has no problems and has not even rusted with rain and salt water in the air since I work very close to the ocean and I got it 2 years ago with constant use. With barely any maintance. I am pretty sure they will consider it in the years to come but I really dont want people to just crap on other knife steels just because the new shiny toy just arrived. Trust me Cru-Wear, 3V and many other steels are not gonna be left in the dust just because of Magnacut. One more example.TRC wont crap on ELMAX for a new steel because they mastered that steel to near perfection even though Magnacut has surpassed it on tests. I hated it when a person made fun of DBK for making their knife with TRC on ELMAX steel right when Magnacut got introduced. That was a stupid comment because I would rather have a knife that is reliable and 100 proof than something that is still new on the market.

I love Benchmade to death, but even if I were a famous RU-vid reviewer, EVEN with their permission to give feedback... I'm not sorry, I'd just straight up say, "it doesn't matter what I think, you don't care, you're gonna make the knife how you want." And I do not think that is an offensive opinion. It's odd that any company would ask opinions on a product that is either ALREADY or NEARLY done. They are never going to consider your criticism, period.
