I wonder how much other footage exists that was trimmed out of the theatrical cut yet was present in the final screenplay as well as in Michael Avallone's novelization? What I would give to have access to every inch of film they shot of the 5 classic POTA films -- especially the opening teaser scene of ESCAPE, with the Ape-onauts inside the spaceship witnessing the effects of the Doomsday Bomb and the "tornado in the sky" -- and then the EARTH-TIME clock ticking down from 11-23-3955 to . . . to what??? We've never seen the final date on the "date meter," only knowing that it ends sometime in 1973! If I had to guess, I'd say it was probably 11-23-1973, exactly 1,982 years to the day, as Armando says the Apes landed on Earth "a month" after the birth of his missing chimpanzee, who we find out was named 'Salome' (delivered by her godfather, Dr. Lewis Dixon), probably due to having been born on October 22, 1973, the Feast Day of St. Salome. But, without seeing whatever actual footage was filmed depicting the ending date of the Back-through-Time trip, we can't really know for sure. It's not as if I want to see any 'official' extended cut versions of each of the 5 movies, but it'd be nice to see all that extra edited-out footage as 'extras'. I'm sure there are fans out there -- like Great Hall 75 -- who would probably create a fan-edit version of each film, like the excellent fan-produced version of David Lynch's "DUNE," which is available on RU-vid. @@thunderdeed1 The estate of APJ would be his widow, the late Natalie Trundy, whose children by a later husband, Carmine Roberto Foggia, are (probably) still alive. Would the estate have the footage? Or would 20th Century-Fox have it, in some archive somewhere? WhoEVER has it . . . RELEASE IT!!!
Man... I wonder if in 50 years if the sfx of 2020 will be perceived as this terrible. Then again, men wearing ape suits in a sauna is a pretty bad starting point.
The funny thing is, these FX looked back even back then. The first one's makeup looked legendary (and still does), but then it just got gradually worse over each subsequent film to the point of eventually being unwatchable. "Conquest" and "Battle" are especially rough, since in those movements the hairline of the wigs aren't even in the right place to match up with where the eyebrows/sides of the mouth end.
