@@EhlistarsWrath I agree. They are both great but Andy Serkis is a legend when it comes to motion caption. Have you seen Andy in Planet Of The Apes Trilogy? And many many more.
Nobody could ever cast you in anything if you don’t have the minimum required to immerse in a roll. Thank god you didn’t pursue acting as a career you could have been mediocre.
_Bilbo and Smaug.. John and Sherlock.. Everett Ross and Doctor Strange.._ _Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch, its like you really can't separate them. These two will really work together no matter what. _*_Iconic._*
We need more Cumberbatch in movies. Good movies. He's so dedicated and passionate about the roles he plays. And he is such a fantastic actor. We need to see him more in movies.
Benedict Cumerbatch ought play every role in every film from now until eternity. The world shall pool its moneys to bring forth a technology of immortality for the great Cumberbatch, in hope that his influence on our lives and imaginations might never perish.
I think 17:14 was REALLY chilling. Like, before this, I wouldn't have believed you if you told me that anybody on this earth could make "Barrel Rider" send chills up and down my spine
ok i actually looked this up because i thought it would be funny to watch benedict cumberbatch crawling around in a leotard while snarling and laughing menacingly but i have ended up with a new appreciation for what a hardworking dedicated actor he is
Yeah, like, you kinda forget that he's even dressed like that. That's how you know he's a fantastic actor. He draws you in regardless of how he's dressed.
Funny?! I honestly prefer watching this video instead of the movie when I want to see this scene. Here you can truly appreciate the talent and artistry of Benedict. He doesn't need a digital makeup to become a dragon, he is a menacing dragon on his own, and he owns it here!
Lol same, I looked it up from a Shxtsngigs video, I actually rate this level of commitment to fully getting into and portraying this character, I was a bit freaked out watching this tbh, goes to show how good he was! Never actually seen LOTR (shock horror, IK) but whenever I do I'm really looking forward to seeing this character! I hope it lives up to seeing him actually do it!
So great, they used none of the MoCap data and animated the dragon manually. They only kept some of the voice recordings. Source: www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/04/wetas-animation-supervisor-talks-about-building-the-cgi-of-the-hobbit-desolation-of-smaug/
"The motion capture suit was not necessary". He didn't had to crawl down on the ground and move like a never seen before creature, but he did it anyways for the sake of creating a better perfomance. He didn't felt ashamed to crawl on the ground and act all of that, even if it kinda looks funny, just for the sake of really going deep into the character. This man's a real actor!
A punny guy. he did that prior to being a household name, I doubt he got paid that much. It was exposure more than anything. And since you think it's no big deal, go ahead and become an actor and let us judge your performance.
A punny guy. a dolt? I told you to become an actor, I didn't say you wanted to become one. Wow, you are some kind of dumb. Way to ignore everything else I mentioned too. This guy...
The level of extroversion is simply mind boggling. It is bad enough with normal acting where you at least play a human but getting to this stage of ridiculous without feeling self conscious is truly remarkable. Very well done.
i like how for Smaug's voice, it only requires a small change of the pitch of his voice to go from hypnotic to sending a chill down your spine. very well acted.
If they ever delve back into the world again he'd be perfect to play Sauron again in his "lord of gifts", persona with which he fooled the elves. Perfect Cheekbones for the role.
@@ethansmedley724 Dunno if the audience benefited from motion capture they didn't and couldn't even use and a vocal performance done elsewhere that was extensively altered digitally
He probably wasn't expecting the level of acting Benedict puts into his roles. He maybe just thought: "Ah, just a voice actor, nothing special OH HOLY JESUS WHAT IS HE DOING?!?!"
E.H Lester freakin hilarious 😂 man, great comeback! As George from Seinfield would have said about 8 hours after thinking about it all day, ‘That’s what I should have said!!’

Wow. Just wow. In today's cinematic world, there's "acting", then there's Benedict Cumberbatch doing this as Smaug. There really is no comparison; dude's on a whole other level of 'awesome'
It’s so weird lol your eyes are seeing this grown man with odd head gear and a gray body suit jumping and crawling around plus white dots all over his face, but your ears hear the voice and your literally see Smaug in a mental imagery sense and it’s terrifying! I honestly believe he was born for this role if that’s a real thing. It literally feels like Smaug is trapped in a human body!
I love how Benedict's like "Look, this is what I'm going to do." Crew: "..uuhhh....that's not really what we were planni.." "Great, let's get started then!" :P Awesome performance
What's really remarkable to me is that he technically didn't have to do any of this. He could have just done the voice, but no. He decided "I'd rather give it my all and crawl around on the floor wearing a nearly skintight suit, covered in white dots.
Similar to why Mark Hamill tended to stand up and move around while voicing the Joker. Andrea Romano said you could video Mark performing the role and use his motions for the animation.
Actors are really just a different breed. I have no idea how they can be this passionate and genuine while looking this goofy and with everyone watching. Same goes for anyone who acts with or opposite CGI. It’s truly amazing
It's a bit like stepping into a role as a GM for a tabletop game. You know it's just you and four friends sitting around a table with some dice, but what you're hoping for is enough buy-in to the fantasy that when you pretend to be a gargantuan elder wyrm, the players are genuinely frightened. If you sell it well enough, the players will, in their heads, picture the hundred foot long ancient beast toying with their characters before it tries to eat them, instead of just picturing you making faces at them. Cumberbatch is basically asking the production crew to imagine the Smaug he's portraying, and pretend they can see the wings and tail and firey breath. In that regard, I think it helps, the more animated and into it he can be.
“and we found the case in the hands of our favorite psychopath” oh so shut up anderson i’m not a psychopath, i’m a high functioning sociopath do your research” i love my two bickering children
i cant believe this it's breathtaking, i can't believe that anyone can say he is a bad actor. He transforms in the space of a few seconds from a goofball to a sociopath to a code-breaking mathematician, and the way he shows his character through body movements and puts so much passion into a voice role even when he doesn't have to, it's incredible. I'm inspired.
This is why you hire talented actors to go out and bring a flair and uniqueness to a character You get the right person to play a character, and it can really make the movie
@@johnchristian8685 it's not about that shame when you did something wrong. Is that shame that you know what you are going to do is ok and worth it but you're afraid at what people might think about throughout
Smaug’s not a psychopath, he’s a high functioning sociopath. Do your research Edit: ok wow I know I uploaded this a year ago but it’s just a Sherlock reference don’t talk out loud you’ll lower the IQ of the whole street
@@stevenc.1470 Flower was being smart when it was unnecessary, as well as it being obvious that Smaug isn't a psycho as well. I love parties so don't try to be cool
@UC50Jzd47Ixh0wKzfuMsiciQ In my experience only children use the ad hominem "kid" but nice attempt there. Your comments are totally irrelevant since my first comment was a joke anyway and you decide to waltz in as a keyboard warrior. Good job
I have pure admiration for Benedict, he just gets completely into character, and not afraid to embarrass himself or make weird facial expressions. No wonder he's probably one of my favorite actor, and if not, my absolute favorite, or idol.
John: “Here Sherlock, take this file.” Sherlock: “What why?” John: “Because you turn into a dragon when you don’t have a case.” *Sherlock takes file* John: “Better?” *Sherlock back to normal* Sherlock: “Better.”
This is the beauty of a classically trained actor who is dedicated to his audience. Benedict's artistry belongs to the world. Peace. Stay safe during the pandemic, everyone. Enjoy your lives indoors and get as many views in of BC as you'd like! :)
I'd pay ready money for a version of the movie where they didn't bother with the CGI dragon, they just spliced a giant grey-body-suited Benedict Cumberbatch into the scene.
When I first heard about him voicing Smaug, I wasn't happy about it. I thought they had just cast a popular actor for no other reason than to put his name on the poster, when a voice-acting role isn't even that important. Yeah, sure, he has a great voice, but I figured anyone could voice Smaug and it wouldn't make any difference because they'll just be talking over a finished animation. Big deal. But he brought Smaug to life in an astonishing way. If every CGI character could be "acted" this way, there wouldn't ever be any problems with them, but they always come out lifeless and alien, like they've been painted over the actors on the film. But not this. This performance was visceral; the force of his character is palpable and real, and none of that would have been possible without Cumberbatch. I have never been more pleased to be proven so completely wrong.
How incredibly sweet is it that he acknowledges that drew from his dad's performance (actor Timothy Carlton) from when he read The Hobbit to a six-year-old Benedict . . there's probably no higher compliment he could give his dad. Bless!
Benedict brought this childhood character to life for me in a way that is just unbelievable. I was 8 years old again, buried under the covers with a flashlight terrified from the moment Smaug’s voice began. THANK YOU for immersing yourself so fully.
@@evilpompom I don't think that's true for him. He is one of those actors who can outshine a role. He is always brilliant. For example Mark Hammil is always either Luke or Joker, because he doesn't have any other memorable roles, he never outshined those performances. While on the other hand Benedict was fantastic in pretty much every movie he has been in, he was excellent as Smaug, Sherlock, Khan, even the SNL sketch about the gay professor. He is always top notch actor. Easily one of the best actors in the world.
