Dates are a great whole-food sweetener. You can get the syrup recipe from the How Not to Die Cookbook for free here: nutritionfacts.org/recipe/date-syrup. And a date glaze: nutritionfacts.org/recipe/balsamic-date-glaze. -NF Team
I love that we mention topics like colon cancer and 3 weeks or 4 weeks later, you put up a video related to colon cancer. You are the most responsive internet doctor I have seen and I have been looking at so many doctors. I love that about you so much.
Dates are refined food. There is no way any "benefits" of dates can outweigh all the outcomes of so much fructose. And by the way how much water they spend to produce dates in the most arid regions of the planet? Vegans really don't care.
Recently I ran out of a rich organic brown sugar that I feed my water kefir and needed to go to the store, but wouldn't make it for a day. So, I fed them a date because I heard that rich dried fruit is good for them. My water kefir (which I have been drinking daily for almost 4 years for anxiety and depression -- for which I used to suffer chronically, and have been completely free of since without medication) was getting a little too yeast cultured and I was starting to get scared that my probiotic friends might be dying. After rinsing them, adding in a dried date (without the seed), the water was fizzing within a few hours. The strains of bacteria (my probiotics) loved it! They actually started populating again within a few days and the sour smell started to go away. I figure, if they love it this much, then the ones that make it to my colon are going to also. And then I saw this video just now. I know why now. Happy health to all! #pharmfreefor4years #foodismedicine
I have been dating dates for years now, and just celebrated our 5 year anniversary! My sweet tooth thanks these little dried beauties everyday! Thanks Doc for the great videos you always put out!
If you’re ever in New York, you need not concern yourself with a place to stay or food to eat I am a plant-based vegan for over 30 years and would be delighted to prepare food for you and find you a lovely home to stay in with one of my friends. I so appreciate all the work you do and your motivation for doing it, it is so beautiful and I am sure your grandma is delighted 😃
When watching his videos, make sure you are skeptical about how glorious antioxidants and superfoods really are. If they were as glorious as he presents them, we,d be living forever with no cancer and that does not seem to be the case. He is nuts about nuts and beans beyond what makes sense because he is fooled by industry funded studies or questionable conclusions. Nevertheless, the videos are tantalizing.
@@theartificialsociety3373 Cancer and many other illnesses are the result of other factors such as stress, regret, hate, and other bad thoughts and feelings that we have throughout our lives. Yeah, these foods will definitely help you if you have a healthy mind as well.
Raluca C your reasoning is not right. There are various terms for your way of thinking like confirmation bias, survival bias, reverse causation. They used to say your ulcer was due to stress. Well that was a load of rubbish as we now know the real cause of ulcers is bacteria or aspirin/NSAIDS. How do you know the disease caused the stress not the stress causing the disease. If some one has stress, they can also make bad decisions which leads to a cascade of troubles.
I sometimes have a half glass of grape juice. I wonder if fructose is processed through the liver fast enough to make a difference. It may provide benefits in recovery though.
I love that you are plant based. I am too. So my question is why are test still experimented on live animals? So, it's not ok to eat the animals, but it's ok to test on them? Doesn't that seem a bit hypocritical? I'm not condemning, I'm asking straight out. It seems to me if we truly want to know the facts of various food on our human health, then shouldn't it be humans who we test on? And before anyone goes off on me about human rights, hear me out. For example, if someone has MS, for example, then wouldn't it make more sense to get that persons, DNA, Blood test, and study that? Aren't the physiologies of dogs, cats, rats, different from human beings? So why test on them?
Daltira honey is not vegan. They cut off the queen’s wings, lock her up, steal/take the honey and in most cases a lot of bees are killed in the harvesting process.
J K do you have epilepsy? If not stop doing keto. Dr Klapper said you get benefits from getting out of ketosis when eating healthy foods. So you could do a two day fast every 20 days or something similar.
@@landerhendrickx3522 Keto (vegan) can be useful short term to lose weight. People who are not physically active and are trying to lose weight could benefit to limit their starchy carbs (rice, pasta) and have less caloricly dense fruit like dates or prunes because lets face it, we don't just eat a handful we eat the whole bag, which makes it way too easy to get into a caloric surplus. One cup (200g) of uncooked jasmine rice is about 600 calories and brown is 700 calories, so if you're goal is weightloss via keto, maybe swap out the rice for something like a can of black beans (200 calories). You've immediately saved yourself 400 or 500 calories for the day by swapping out starchy carbs for less caloricly dense but still healthy food, great for keto dieters. However it you are an otherwise active person who excercises a lot, obviously you won't need to limit your carbs.
I ate dates in the weeks prior to giving birth to my daughter. I had a great labor and delivery. Everyone in my group of expecting moms who ate dates had easy labors. Though one gave birth in the car on the way to the hospital because she didn't realize she was in labor until she was very close to giving birth, in "transition."
Do the dates have to be dried or can they be fresh? I've had some fresh ones from specialty stores and they are good and less sweet. and, If the dates are freeze-dried do they still possess these benefits? Thanks to anyone who may know these answers !
I screamed out loud when I heard what they did to those poor rats and called my husband over. Those researchers should have someone twist THEIR left testicles until the blood is cut off to see how they like it. I then read the chilling words in the study: “All rats were sacrificed 4h after detorsion.” What kind of monsters are these researchers? How do you go home to your family after that kind of day’s work? I don’t want to benefit from any data gathered this way.
You have to be very highly educated and have dedicated your life to research to end human suffering. But if you overlook that, they're probably completely villainous
I'd be more interested in seeing what they did to weight gain. I made some date bars and ate them like an addict until they were gone. For me, if I want to control my weight, I have to stay away from anything that tastes sweet other than berries, like blueberries. I them with my oatmeal and don't eat again until lunch.
@@ellen3093 Yeah. Blueberries have a higher glycemic index than dates, but when you compare glycemic load, which takes into account portion size, blueberries score a 5 and dates score an 18, one of the highest fruits. You can't fool mother nature. Those things are sweet and I would be eating them all day. It's like artificial sweeteners for me. I thought I could eat that natural one, forget the name, so I put it on my oatmeal for a while and found I was much hungrier during the day and gained a lot of weight. If I taste something too sweet, it makes me hungry. I made a huge pan of date bars, double batch, and they were gone within a day, along with my normal meals.
fire7side yeah, i think you’re very right. Berries for the win! Blueberries and lingonberries are soo calorie dilute and i just put them in my oatmeal, they don’t make me binge or anything. Red grapes id recommend as well, perfect for getting the sweetness without the caloric load.
There aren't any. He has videos saying we should avoid high oxalate vegetables so what makes dates different because they are at least just as high in oxalates?
He didn't say avoid, he said limit. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-liCXaoh6LPA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ysBE6GMutpI.html
I used to eat them by pound after buying them on road side when I was a kid. I burned them off easily as it was super hot. The no sugar freaks scared the heck out of me. Then I realized date sugar is combined with fiber so it can’t all go in & I am right. That’s why dates are ok in moderation like 6-7 a day equal to less than 100 calories. You can sub it for all your sweetener purposes.
Dear Mr. Greger! I became a raw foodist a year ago. My height is 170 cm, the weight was 68 kg, now I have only 55 kg and I just can’t gain weight. Maybe you can tell me what combinations of fruits and vegetables can help me? Thank you very much in advance.
I love dates, but I discontinued eating them after I attended a conference some time ago where an history professor claimed that in the ancient Egypt, people were very much affected by tooth cavity, which in some case eventually led to death (poor nutrition, without teeth). Apparently, according to this history professor, dates contain some kind of enzyme that causes teeth to rot. Has anyone ever heard anything about it?
Dates make my blood sugar raise. what do you think about that? thanks for sharing your video. I keep an open mind about them, that is why i am asking you this question.
Why would ANYONE twist a testicle of any animal or human? That’s inhumane and it hurts me to hear this. I think medical science goes way too far sometimes. That was unnecessary! I wants to hear the benefits of eating dates, not how a scientist tortured a poor mouse. 😡
The only reason I dont est dates and no dried fruits in general (except low sugar ones like dried berries lr apricots or so occassionally) is because of the fact that they are so sticky and sugary, that they will increase my chance for plaque/caries in my teeth. Thats one of my biggest fears, so I avoid foods that expose my teeth to sugar, especially sticky chewy highly concentrated sugar like dried fruits
I heard somewhere that you should not eat more than 2 dates a day.. But here, it sounds like it is ok to eat more then 2..?? My problem is I like it so much that if there is no restriction, I can easily eat 10 a day then getting too much sugar I think..
I re-watched the video and still haven't figured out what they did with that brown smoothie and maybe I don't want to know. But look at all those date varieties! Wow, and I have only seen 2 types in stores.
I prefer dates on their own tbh. My dad has a friend who brings him dates from his country. Idk the name of these specific dates but they’re definitely not medjool. They’re a drier variety. I like them way better
I love you Dr. Greger, but I just bought another box of 1200 Splenda packets from Costco. Besides, I don't remember Splenda getting a "red light." I believe it was a yellow light.
Hi Dr. Is't great that dates are good for the colon but, for me, I get pain in the bowl area (sometimes) when I eat any kinds of sugar, like dates, and some fruits. What can be done to help this? I do take a probiotic and aloe vera. Thanks. K
You may have a genetic mutation on the fructose metabolism pathway if you can't/find difficult eating fruit. Check the book "inheritance". Might be worth checking with doctor and do a genetic test
@@thewhite8uard if this is your thinking, go with fresh dates :) . Either way, they're both a lot healthier than alternatives. The proof is in the video.
@@Jadeontwowheels As I know date palms are cultivated in tropic areas of the world. There are no fresh dates where I live. Anyway any fruits are seasonal treat. Orangutans and bears use them to gain fat before scarce food season.
@@thewhite8uard The only thing missing is water. Just add water if you want to make date syrup. Much healthier than maple syrup, as the chart implied with the date sugar beating every other alternative. As Dr. G said in another video, date sugar is just ground up dates.
@@someguy2135 Sugar content would be the same no matter how much water you add. Besides raw dates contain more glucose and less fructose, dried dates are pure fructose. That's what happen in fruits, the more ripe fruit the more glucose turn into fructose, which is the most sweet and harmful part of sucrose.
So I'm sorry. What's the takeaway? The last bit sounded a bit unsure. Dates are good good for you because... Or dates are considered to be good because of some decent studies that didn't quite bring it across the line? Is there a list of assertions that we can take to the bank?
We do know dates fight cancer in vitro, meaning in a lab our in a test tube or outside of an organism. The research needed is not there yet. So dates may or may not help. It really depends weather we absorb those compounds into our bloodstream, but even if we do not, they do pass our gut and colon (unless they are digested through the process), so dates should help fight those cancers. Just as we eat broccoli (or other cruciferous vegetables) and absorb sulforaphane (unless we have not allowed the enzyme to do it's job, which is to turn glucoraphanin into sulforaphane, so for example if we destroy the enzyme with heat, there won't be much sulforaphane. Which is why a solution is to either cut the veggies up and allow the enzyme to do it's job which takes around 40 min and then cook. Or eat raw. Or cook and then blend a separate raw portion and add it in the after cooled down cooked version, so you add the enzyme back in into a cooled down cooked version of the cruciferous veg dish. Or simply add mustard powder to a cooled down cooked version which contains the enzyme because it is from the same family as cruciferous veg). Since we do that with cruciferous veg (absorb sulforaphane), we might do so with dates, but as I said the research is not there to confirm it.
