The Vessel-ID System investigation on the International Space Station demonstrated the ability for a space-based radio receiver to track a ship’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) signal, the marine equivalent of the air traffic control system. Since being turned on in 2010, Vessel-ID has been able to relay more than 400,000 ship position reports from more than 22,000 ships in a single day, proving a quantum leap in the ship tracking ability of coast guards around the world. This ability, coupled with multiple AIS tracking satellites launched since, is already making travel among the waves safer for thousands of ships around the globe. The ship identification and tracking system technology already aided in orienting rescue services for a lone survivor stranded in the North Sea, giving new hope to once impossible situations.

Excellent video! A great example of bringing technology used for International Shipping and International Space Station together for all humanity.

I think this is awesome. Well done!

That is wonderful. I am so surprised that, with air traffic control, and just vast amounts of technology, this was only implemented recently.

So we loose an airplane, but we can save people in ocean ? This system was also intact when we lost mh320.

***** How feasible is it to have this kind of tech built into GPS watches etc. So that lost hikers/mountain climbers can be found?

Could have been done on a satellite much cheaper and with broader access. For example as secondary payload on a NOA satellite.. We dont need ISS for that.

ISS is for Prototyping stuff like this. Having AIS systems in space was a bit of a hack. Even in this short beta period it still worked well enough to save that man's life.

***** lol... AIS receivers?... That's nothing to "develope". We have that for decades. THis is just Pro-ISS propaganda, justifying their nonsense entertainment they call human space flight. It's a waste of money and I cant wait to see it downed in the pacific.

***** If I made a list of things that are a waste of money, the ISS would be very, very far down. Please do us all a favor and go watch things you are actually interested in instead.

the single ISS can serve a particular region on the planet..... why not use satellites which are available all around the world....
