Many people believe that “airing out” wounds and allowing a scab to form is a signal that the healing process has begun. But that isn’t true.
Cells are made of water, and survive in moist environments underneath our outer layer of skin. Cells that are exposed to the air after a cut or scrape dry out, forming what we know as a scab, but these scabs are actually setting up an environment that limits the movement of new cells.
Check out this video to learn more about the wound healing process and how moist wound healing promotes growth and movement of new cells.

I was always taught to let the wound dry out. After getting a bad cut on my hand over Thanksgiving, I did some research on wound care to prevent scaring and all the stuff I've been finding says to keep it moist and covered. It's healing a lot faster and none of the discomfort you get from a scab. I'll update if there's any scarring.

@sdbeagle10
@sdbeagle10 2 года назад
@@goodking9799 well not gonna lie, I kept it moist at first and it was extremely itchy. I'm sure it was new cells forming or something along those lines. Eventually tho the itching stopped and it didn't look like the wound was healing any faster and I got a bit concerned. So I allowed it to dry out and a scab could form. Once the scab formed and the itchiness came back I kept it moist again with some Vaseline. It healed really fast right after that and the wound is barely noticeable. I think it did help to keep it moist at first to allow the new cells to grow but I still think it needs to "breathe", hard to explain lol.

If your cells were a certain very rare species of Asian Arowana then you'd be a multi . With how many cells people have, and how valuable some of those fish are, if you could get $300,000 USD (One of the most expensive Asian Arowana ever sold) per cell you'd be set for like the heat death of the universe at a solid 2.172e+20 $2,172,000,000,000,000,000 USD. I believe that's about 200 million million million dollars. So you'd be pretty happy probably... I don't even know how someone could spend that much money in one, much less, multiple lifetimes.

I was told by a nurse to cover it up during the day to prevent infection and to help with the healing process. But to uncover it at nights to let it get some air to also help the body speed up the healing process. My daughter fell on some cement and tore a huge chunk of 2 layers from her skin on her foot. Very big and painful looking wound. She can barely walk at times. She walks better when it’s wrapped up. Ive had triple antibiotics on it every day with gauze and a wrap during the day, but at nights we let it air dry. Im questioning whether the air drying is necessary or not bc of blankets going over it and stuff.

I had a fall and wounded myself for the first time in over a decade. It was a deep gash on my knee and I had to relearn the healing process. Through some research and trial and error this is what seemed to have worked best. 1. Clean the open wound thoroughly with water. Yes this hurts, but it’s vital. 2. Cover the cleaned wound with a wound dressing, especially overnight to avoid bleeding/weeping onto your bed sheets. This dressing makes the wound moist and rapidly speeds up the healing process. 3. After a few nights of sleeping with the dressing, I noticed the wound was repaired to the point where it was almost level with the outmost skin. It was at this point that I started airing out the wound during the day to form a scab. CAUTION: at the very beginning, I wasn’t washing the wound because I didn’t want to mess up the scab. It turns out the scab was infected (dark brown and red). I fixed this by sitting in a hot shower for 20 minutes until the scab was moist and then scrubbing it half off with a loofah and soap. This restarted the healing process. From that point I continued to dress the wound every night and gently washing it in the shower daily.

I once got a paper cut on my finger. I normally would just let it heal on its own but I decided to do an experiment and use a band aid with anti bacterial cream. Without the cream and band aid it took 5-7 days for the wound to heal where as without them it took about a month. I think the reasoning behind it is that the skin was moist the whole time it was covered and was able to heal quickly.

I am still healing from a nasty dog bite wound on my little finger. I am so thankful to have the hydrocel bandaids that are available now for open cuts. They keep the wound moist yet dry. You can see the wound healing yet no scab forms. I went to urgent care and they suggested antibiotics in case of infection which are common in my situation. I watched my finger for more swelling and just kept the bandaids on.you can keep the bandaid on for five days before changing it. I tried the air method for one day and my finger just did not heal and started to throb again. I have a medical background. I hope anyone viewing this video takes the information seriously as it is true. With a small cut you may getaway with no bandaid. Yet you will find that using this bandaid will speed your healing and limit scarring.

Doesn’t make sense to disparage a natural body process like that. This information is partly true but only when applied to certain type of wound. A deep wound should not be allowed to scab because it will dry out completely down to the most subcutaneous level of the skin. However a surface wound, scratch or brush burn should be allowed to scab to keep it protected while the body naturally heals itself. Just apply cocoa butter to keep it from scarring. Bandaids are a bad choice in some instances. They do keep the wound moist but because we have habits of keeping it on for far far too long, it invites infection. If it is that bad, use A&D and keep it open and clean it a lot. If it’s just a boo-boo, please just run it under water, hold a sterile pad to it for ten minutes and once the bleeding stops leave it alone.

I swear, I'm no nurse or medical professional wanna b. Just a human who had a nasty puncture wound. So I'm gonna just say what got me to the urgent care, and what I wish I knew before the puncture. Distilled water, or fresh bottled water to flush wound asap. In first aid kit. Next Kotex pads, or pampers diapers, yep your hearing me right. I tried gauze and soap and water for first aid, that was misery pure and simple. The gauze stuck to the wound when it got full of blood, when I changed the gauze and statistics they 're opened the wound. After two days of gauze and stereo strips urgent care gave me along with a needed anti biotic. I got sick of 're opening the wound and did this, poured fresh distilled water on the wound and blotted it dry with a kite pad. The kotex dried the wound and didn't stick to the healing tissue. I live in humidity so at night I gently laid the kotex pad on the wound to sleep up sweat. And nothing from the kotex pad stuck to my wound or hindered my human healing mechanisms. Gauze pads and the plastic adhesives on band aids kept sticking to the scab, and 're opening the wound at dressing changes. So my point, band aid meets kotex for pads to let a wound resperate and not stick to the wound or wound margin. Change dressing every four hours till the scab forms.

How the hell did humans survive for hundreds of thousands of years without a band aid?

@@tommyharris5817 that’s kinda true, many many people died of gang green and sepsis bc of infection.

My mom was convinced that the old way was better, she was so wrong because drying out the wound and allowing a scab to set it in is a highway to infection and severe pain.

sure it makes it better buuut not using bandades trains ur body to be more responsive when u have a wound instead of making it dependant on bandaids

It's to prevent dirt in the air from going inside the wound. Surely, any human would NEVER want any infections caused by a wound. Some simple scratches that is left untreated can result of a part to be amputated.
