@@DanCBearded So true, its almost like they cant believe that my beard is real. I know the owner of the dealership i work at would probably like me clean shaven but the Swagfather and his glorious mane are becoming a reason customers come in. By being positive, courteous and serving along with spot on grooming I am breaking the prejudices that go along with being bearded. We bearded brothers need to represent by being approachable so we can educate and promote other men to grow out there facial hair🤝🏼

@Dan C thanks so much for breaking the old way of thinking Heat is bad for your beard. I was married to a Cosmetologist for about 18 years, she was specially trained in everything hair and beard related. She always told me heat will damage your head hair before it will damage your beard hairs, everything you said is BIG FACTS 💯❗️❗️❗️❗️ right now she has about 28 years experience or so, she went to Cosmetology school after she graduated high school and has been doing it since!! I blow dry daily. While blowdrying I'm brushing it left to right, right to left, up and down, in small sections at a time and it makes my very wavey beard nicely styled and much straighter. Before applying heat I use oil, then balm mixed with Argan oil which is a great heat protection oil. Comb glides through my beard easily and stays neat all day. Took me a couple years to get this right lol

We are heated brush fans ourselves. It does make beard feel a bit thinner than the hair dryer but we just cannot get beard as straight, and get all curls and waves out like we can with the heated comb. Glad you did this video because people immediately go negative when it comes to heat on beard. Keep it growing brother!

Thanks for the video. After my beard became long enough, I started blow drying to help control my gray beard. The first blow dryer was huge and blocked the view of my beard, so I went smaller. The Conair Elite Pro which I found the low fan speed setting was still like a mini tornado blowing my beard every which way. Now I have the MASC Blown Blow Dryer and the low fan setting is gentle and effective. I rarely have tangles or knots in my beard and now I know why, heat. Except for my product free day, if my beard is wet, here comes the blow dryer.

When my beard started getting a bit of length I started using a blow dryer (med heat, low speed). I went months and my blow dry styling was mediocre at best. I tried kent comb, ox horn comb, boars hair and round brush, all same results. It was kind of discouraging, but I chalked it up mostly to an awkward phase of growth. For the last 4-6 weeks I have bumped the dryer up to high heat (only change I made) and it has completely changed my beard styling for the good. I don't know if the temp on the dryer wasn't enough (good quality blow dryer) or the distance I hold the dryer from my beard was too far or my hair just needs a little more heat. Either way, my beard looks and feels more healthy than ever and I don't leave the house without using it. This video makes me feel better about my decision and relieves any worry I had that I was damaging my beard hair. Thanks!!

I use heat from my blow dryer everyday to style and straighten my beard. My routine is based on a conversation I had with another bearded man which is part dry my beard, then dry my beard using low speed and heat, apply oil and away you go. His reason is that oil and water don't mix so why put product in your beard until its dry. My thoughts are that the heat from the dryer will not only straighten and style the beard but also open the pores of the skin underneath making the products we use more effective. Again, another great video Dan 👍
@DanCBearded
@DanCBearded 4 года назад
So there are two issues with putting oil on after drying your beard. He is correct that oil and water do not mix, but that is the same reason you want to apply oil when your beard partially wet. 1) The oil acts a sealant on your hairs and traps the moisture in. If you dry completely, especially with heat, you are robbing your beard of that water. 2) Heat without a protective layer of oil will damage the hair. May not notice at first but it adds up over time

I suppose a mild heat is okay for short periods of time but I personally wouldn’t use excessive heat or use heat too often. Also, reinforcing what you’ve said before Dan C, drinking plenty of water and oiling the beard and allowing some time for that oil to absorb before using heat is paramount. In saying that, I might be wrong but I would use just carrier oils and not a blend with essential oils as I think there may be some essential oils that may not work well with heat and may burn or damage the beard. Maybe bergamot or eucalyptus or something like that but please correct me if I’m wrong. I said eucalyptus because I’m from Australia and our eucalyptus trees burn rapidly and explode in bushfire season and that’s because of the eucalyptus oil. May not translate to beards and mild heat but that’s my thoughts.
@DanCBearded
@DanCBearded 3 года назад
The essential oils that are used in beard products are completely safe with heat! There is a risk with certian carrier oils with the sun, but the risk isn't from the heat. It is more about the UV rays. No worries in this case

Yes, glad you brought this up! I struggled this in my first bearded journey and when I hit my first yeard beard. It was nerve-wracking. Back in the day when this new “fad” of growing beards, every guy keeps saying wash your beard once a week, also that was the time there were no co-washing ideas. Imagine the struggle I went through. I did blow dry my hair, but I let my beard go bone dry first before applying my oil (as one company suggested). Bad advice. My beard didn’t turn outright. So, the second time rolled around, now the co-washing idea comes in, putting oil in a slightly damp hair. My second yeard was pretty good. It was during the time you came along and learning from you helps. However, I might want to add the shampoo or conditioners that have a strong stripping side. I’m starting to steer clear with those. Even tho’ I do apply heat, but later on the day the snags and all else comes back for a strange reason (no, there were no windy days. There’s never any winds in Southern Cal 😉). Correct me if I’m wrong about this by those stripping agents. Now my beard is way passed the yeard for the third time. It has much improved over the years that I started back in 2006. I no longer use balms. Only oil and butter. Anyway, I know it’s long, but I just wanted to share this.

Great topic! Like you, I need to have my beard looking clean and sharp (not the squirrels near version when left untreated) for my career. I bought the Ionic Hair Straightener online last year and it’s made all the difference. For me, I prefer the heated brush and I only need to use it once (maybe twice) a week. Never have any problems with running a comb through my beard either. I do apply Argan oil hair protector with heat shield to my beard before using the heated comb to keep from damaging my beard. I’ve read to never apply regular beard oil before using a heated brush because it can actually burn or damage your beard. And great point about heat straightening your beard in order to get a proper trim. I’m going to do that from now on the night before a trim. Thanks again and keep on growin’!
@DanCBearded
@DanCBearded 4 года назад
The "never apply normal beard oil before heat" people are just lazy with their research, or are pushing a product like a heat shield. Argan oil is amazing for heat! They are so correct there, but... so is sweet almond, so it jojba, so is castor, and most of the quality carrier oils we use. The heat or smoke points of those oils are all about the same, and a few are even better than Argan oil. The only time it could be bad, is when using cheap fragrance oils, and I would ask why are you using those products any way? haha Drives me crazy when I hear companies or content creators push the heat shield or bust idea.

I’m just using a hair dryer again. Not so much fir styling as my beard is inly in month 2 of regrowth but for after shower I put my oil in an 80% dry damp beard and hit it on warm heat and comb just to train my beard fuller at thus point, as it’s thicking nice but at 8 weeks it’s onky about 1-1.5 inches long so trying to delovople my heat routine now for extra thickening of beard and fir when it at 3 inches ti straughten

I have stayed away from heat and come to think of it my combs do snag resulting in a thinness on one side. It is seriously annoying. I've always been told to "stay away" from heat. I have adopted most all of my routine from you so I figure I'll use some med heat in the morn. I have to see my Barber on Tues. so this might help with a better trim. As always, thank you. Psst. You mention that at times, you will reset your beard via heated brush at night. What if your nighttime routine is just damp the beard and put butter in it? Is it okay then after the butter to use the heated brush after butter? I’m a morning shower person and only apply oil then when I have throughly wash my beard. Any feedback is appreciated!

For heat, it’s always damp beard followed by beard oil. Never butter before, for me.

@@DanCBearded that’s what I was thinking. I guess what I could every now and then I can do an evening shower, oil it, wait 5 mins, use heated brush, then butter. Would that be a better thing to do? Is a heated brush reset very important? I mostly always use the blow dryer, and here in the last week, a dip under my chin has appeared and I thought I mastered how to get rid of it! But it has appeared again!

Great Review! I use the Jergen K beard brush. It is great. Question is how often should one use this and will it damage the hair with frequent use? I have very long, coarse and super super curly beard sometimes it hurts to comb it 😑, but with this brush it was amazing and so soft after one use. Forget the hair dryer this is the best way imo. I recommend to use a beard oil before.

@@DanCBearded Yes thank you! I just watched a lot of your videos on this topic and asked on everyone to see which one you'd answer first lol. If I put the temp lower on the heated beard brush it will make the beard less curly and coarse, and if I put the temp higher it'll make it straighter and softer correct? Thanks for responding I appreciate it!

Always dry my beard every morning with a blow dryer. Can't go without it. My only doubt: does heat mess up scent strength to a degree? I commonly put product AFTER I dried and finished my base style.
@DanCBearded
@DanCBearded 4 года назад
I do not think heat messes with the scent at all, but the simple idea of drying does change the scent. When you do not use heat, the scent stays longer with the air dry method. The oil is going to try quicker with heat, and then lose some of its scent

Ive been growing my beard for 15 months and no matter what I do (condition often or not, use oil daily, wash often or not, leave in conditioners, etc) my beard is always very coarse almost like steel wool. I assume I might have just been delt a bad hand so to speak but do you have any suggestions? Having a coarse beard leads to hairs being pulled out even though I'm using a nice wide tooth wood comb.

It all depends on the beard. Sometimes curls can make openings and let light pass through and actually make the beard look thinner. For other thin beards it adds texture and depth. Try different things and see what works for your beard
