Cats have been close to humans since ancient times. Even before our era, these cute creatures regularly carried out their "service" for the benefit of people. So, in ancient Egypt, there was a cult of the goddess Bastet, depicted as a cat. These animals were considered sacred companions of man in the afterlife. And after death, they were mummified along with the pharaohs.
Thanks to their hunting instinct, cats have been, and are, the main exterminators of rodents. But in our technology-saturated age, these creatures serve more of an aesthetic interest. In this regard, there are many breeds artificially created by man.
One of these representatives is the Bengal cat breed. It was bred not so long ago, in the 1960s the first attempts were made. A feature of this species is the leopard coat color, for which the species received the name "little leopard".
The "progenitor" of the breed was the American biologist Jean Mill. When she ended up in Bangkok, she could not resist buying herself a small leopard-colored kitten in the market. Later it turned out that poachers, who exterminated local wild cats of the Felis bengalensis breed that lived in natural conditions for the sake of beautiful skin, sold kittens to tourists as souvenirs.
Returning home to the United States, the geneticist named her new pet, Malaysia. This kitty grew up, but her temper remained wild, the only one who "melted" her heart was an ordinary domestic black cat who lived at Jean's house. The result of natural crossing was only one cat, similar in color to the mother, and in character and habits to the father. This prompted Jean to start working on breeding a domestic Bengal cat with a rare color and obedient temperament.
After 30 years in 1991, at the TIKA championship, the world first saw the sweetest creature in a wild fur coat.
Bengals have their own unique characteristics, so before you get such a pet, you need to weigh everything: the pros and cons of this breed.
