On our @Ham4Progress Instagram we will be highlighting those who have changed history but didn't make the history books in our new series: #WeTellTheirStories.
First up, Christopher Jackson recites a letter from Benjamin Banneker, a free Black man living in Boston, to Thomas Jefferson highlighting the hypocrisy of the Declaration of Independence. This piece, introduced by Renée Elise Goldsberry, was filmed inside Federal Hall National Memorial, the site of George Washington’s inauguration. Follow @Ham4Progress on Instagram for more.

This letter wasn’t written agains Jefferson it was written in partnership with him! By the time this letter was written the pilgrims were already turning ships back that were trying to bring slaves here and the founders were already trying to abolish slavery but needed unanimous agreement and the DEMOCRATS refused to agree to abolish it!!

Here's the rest of the speech: "...And now, Sir, altho my Sympathy and affection for my brethren hath caused my enlargement thus far, I ardently hope that your candour and generosity will plead with you in my behalf, when I make known to you, that it was not originally my design; but that having taken up my pen in order to direct to you as a present, a copy of an Almanack which I have calculated for the Succeeding year, I was unexpectedly and unavoidably led thereto. This calculation, Sir, is the production of my arduous Study in this my advanced Stage of life; for having long had unbounded desires to become acquainted with the Secrets of nature, I have had to gratify my curiosity herein thro my own assiduous application to Astronomical Study, in which I need not to recount to you the many difficulties and disadvantages which I have had to encounter. And altho I had almost declined to make my calculation for the ensuing year, in consequence of that time which I had allotted therefor being taking up at the Federal Territory by the request of Mr. Andrew Ellicott, yet finding myself under Several engagements to printers of this state to whom I had communicated my design, on my return to my place of residence, I industriously apply’d myself thereto, which I hope I have accomplished with correctness and accuracy, a copy of which I have taken the liberty to direct to you, and which I humbly request you will favourably receive, and altho you may have the opportunity of perusing it after its publication, yet I chose to send it to you in manuscript previous thereto, that thereby you might not only have an earlier inspection, but that you might also view it in my own hand writing.-And now Sir, I shall conclude and Subscribe my Self with the most profound respect your most Obedient humble Servant, Benjamin Banneker NB any communication to me may be had by a direction to Mr. Elias Ellicott merchant in Baltimore Town. B B As an Essay of my calculation is put into the hand of Mr. Cruckshank of philadelphia, for publication I would wish that you might neither have this Almanack copy published nor give any printer an opportunity thereof, as it might tend to disappoint Mr. Joseph Cruckshank in his sale."

I had never heard about Benjamin before which is shameful because this is one of the most eloquent, beautiful and scathing reviews of Thomas Jefferson, his hypocrisies and the double standards of all of the use. This deserves to be printed in every textbook, told in every history alongside the creation of the nation of the US. To truly show the hypocrisies, to show that the injustices of slavery and racism were not natural of the times but commonly called out all around them, but Jefferson and others like him willingly turned a blind eye and continued to stay elevated in their station. This is such a fantastic dichotomy to Hamilton as a musical too. Though they make nods at slavery, racism and those injustices, bottom line, these were people freeing themselves of tyrants only to place themselves in the position of power to grind others under their heals. And I can't imagine a better way to demonstrate that than through this. Where is my Benhamin Banneker musical?! If this writing is any indication of what we could expect, it would be phenomenal

It's sad that I never learned about Benjamin Banneker in school. I had previously heard his name, but did not know who he was. Very few things can give me chills, this did. This was a man with higher intellect than the man he wrote this letter to, and Jefferson, in his cowardice, evaded any admission of blame and hypocrisy.

Jefferson was like a today Republican that no matter how eloquent and convincing arguments to logic are they still fall on deaf ears
@tori2dles
@tori2dles 3 года назад
@@heknowswherefranceis4838 - I think he is saying the letter was eloquent, convincing, called Jefferson into account, both for enslaving hundreds of people AND for allowing and enabling slavery in a country where he’d just proclaimed freedom as an inalienable right for ALL as endowed by their Creator. And he is imploring Jefferson lose the blindness in his eyes, put off the deafness in his ears and enact the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution for ALL, not just white freedman. Furthermore, he is comparing that to today’s GOP, that when truth has continue to be spoken to them convincingly, powerfully and with gravity, most of them (like Jefferson) refused to listen and chose to live in hypocrisy to the values he claimed to hold so dear.

I KNOW THIS COMMENT IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE IGNORED, BUT LISTEN! I know why we dont see Laurens in the song before Alex gets shot. Alex says when he gets a glimpse of the other side, “I see Laurens leading a soliders chorus”. The reason we dont see that is because Anthony is simply playing Philip, but because we already saw Laurens leading the chorus. In Rise Up, Laurens is leading a chorus of people in white clothing. We associate the color white with angels. The people that Laurens are really directing to sing are angels. Thats why we dont see Laurens leading the soliders chorus at the end, because we already did.

It's funny how often I turn to Hamilton when I see injustice happening in the country and in the world. I once vented my fear and anger about the things we all saw happen in 2017-2021 by writing something based on Hamilton lyrics, using Hamilton's cut verse from "The Adams Administration" as the beginning and end. I saw his former cabinet members pathetically condemn him after enabling him for four years and wanted to scream, "YOU WERE IN THE CABINET, YOU WERE COMPLICIT IN WATCHING HIM GRABBING AT POWER AND KISSING IT!", I saw America turning our backs on our Afghan allies and NATO doing very little to help Ukraine at the beginning of the war and recreated the Hamilton logo and wrote underneath it "Do we not fight for freedom?" Sadly, I misplaced that drawing,
