After the Cars, when Benjamin was keeping his music alive, he was all over the east coast in small venues....man, if I had known that, I would have become an "Orrhead". How I would have loved to see him in person.
Me too...if only I had known. I'm a New Englander and would of traveled anywhere to see him in New England as I was just 19 years old at the time of this performance
I cant even listen to this song now. Let alone watch Benjamin sing this song without tearing up. Vocally, it's just so beautiful and it makes me so sad and heartbroken that he passed away so young of such a horrible Cancer, so undeserving for such a sweet, kind, humble life loving person. May you rest eternally Benjamin, you never die if you are always remembered.
I tried and could not scroll down farther.. never ran out of replys.. I just got impatient about my post; I hoped to find out in an older post, what cancer it was that he had. Not trying to be a buzzkill here. I also wondered, as I have looked this song up a number of times to add to posts on fb, and this one made me think of Mississippi Queen done live/outdoors before 911. At first I was looking for Ric Ocasic and had no idea until other replys that these guys were a totally fortunate few that got to sit in and do this song with Ben. I had thought they were the original cars until i read that post. To be honestI thought the keyboard player could have used a volume adjustment or maybe someone on a sound board could bring Ben out more with a bit less of the others. Yet I was not there and I have seen manyrreplys saying they sounded great. I do totally agree. gone too soon & missed tremendously.
I agree..I've even heard mediocre singers on talent shows nowadays trying it, and failing...only one Benjamin Orr and he is now gone from us and moved onto the next realm.
They say, only the GOOD DIE YOUNG, Ben seems to be a really nice down to earth kind of guy, no EGO what so ever..... he left us with these precious Videos and Songs.
age does nothing to diminish this man's voice or sex appeal. his comment at the announcement shows he was funny and humble, too. how i wish he were still around making music.
This song is so timeless. i remember when it was hit back when i was an elementary student, when the only "blues" i knew was when it was time to go to school.(I HATED SCHOOL). This song would play when i was on my way to school, and Mr. Orr played this song so melancholy, a real soundtrack to my ride to school! I so regret not seeing him live in the nineties. i guess you live and learn. He just seems like such a cool dude. i wish i could have told him in person how much his music meant to me.
Best live version of this song I ever herd.I miss Benjamin Orr we lost a great talent and great man.Ben if you can hear us you will live in our hearts forever.
Best song singer ever this is fantastic damn what a lose rip my hot favorite singer best version of this rip Ben hope u can drive me up to heaven bless miss & love u always will remember u for this 💎 bless u 👍❤️☮️😻🤟🙏🎶🎵😹
Benjamin was gifted and such a handsome man.I luv his voice -could listen to him over and over and over again.Which I have been doing in the last few weeks. He was sooo dreamy. : )
Sadly, pancreatic Cancer. Ben was Brilliant, a kind soul & Gifted. Miss you much Ben RIP! I saw several WBOS concerts at South station in the early '90s. Very nostalgic & a fun environment for a show. Squeeze was one of my favorites.
His guitarist, John Kalishas, passed away a few years after Ben. I was fortunate enough to see them together around 1997 in Tarentum PA. Both were excellent together. Kalishes was a downright excellent guitarist...
Gives me a spark of happiness thinking they are together again in spirit, having some drinks, shooting the shit, thrashing some tunes, talking about riding their motorcycles. May they be raging in Rock n Roll heaven.
This proves Benjamin was a humble guy,how many superstars would do this kind of gig these days or even back then. Its bitter sweet seeing this,it makes you smile but oh so sad he is no longer with us,that said he will live on in our hearts forever more, thanks Benjamin....RIP.
I think you stated it perfectly, Stewart. The sheer novelty of this appearance, the level to which this band melded their sound with the incredible Ben Orr, is what really knocks me out. Yeah, bitter sweet.
Benjamin Orr... Gone but not forgotten. Rest easy my friend... And we will keep spinning your awesome music that you left for us. Your place will never be taken and your fans sorely miss your presence. 11 years ago today... A sad day in rock history.... A sad day I will never forget...R.I.P.
I was there, I worked just a few blocks away at the time. I remember being blown away by just how talented this guy was. So glad I got to see him play.
It's sad to lose such great talent, combined with gorgeous looks, so early in life. This song is so ironical. Ben hardy had any time left on earth when this was filmed. RIP Ben Orr.
Una versión sorprendente!!! Con algunas diferencias respecto a la versión difundida... Pero la interpretación de Benjamin, es magistral!!!! Una voz inolvidable!! 💕🎤🎼🎸😇
Heard this song while I was living overseas. Fell in love with his voices. Did not know what he looks like. You were Supper sexy, handsome and the VOICES....! Love you for ever..! Rip.. Ben..!
Unique voice, brilliant style, the best flashback song! It makes me feel sad and happy at the same time. Just thinking!!! Thanks dear Benjamin, I'm sure that you're with God, singing with the angels!!!
This live version is so calming and reassuring to us fans who dearly miss him...he seemed so at peace and relaxed here; even the joke at the end was entertaining. What a true shining star! ...miss his unique type of singing & songwriting...RIP, Ben.
OMG I Love Benjamin Orr. I remember listening to the Cars then watching on MTV and I loved him back then. I only wish I was able to see him like many have. Now I am obsessed like many other fans are. :) RIP Benjamin Orr :(
@jourene1 ..yeah, he is missed..really tragic..what a loss..for him firstly...and for us. Beautiful singer/musician...great emotional expressiveness in every, consonant..every syllable he sang. ..."He had a style"..as the old soul song said.
i love you ben,i remember seeing you all the time at the pan am shuttle when you were recording door to door .you were so nice ,you gave me two tickits to the show at msg and tks to the after show.i wiil always love you.
Same here man. Mick Karn and Gary Day were a little more influential to me personally for bass but still... Benjamin was a huge influence on both my singing and playing. Weird, looks like we are cut from a similar cloth dude.
nice to see no dislikes. I agree with @Longueepee even in this raw state, it's still nice to hear that voice one last time. And he sounds really strong. The band backing him is pretty tight, too. thanks to whoever recorded this and posted it. Much thanks.
I traded a Mattel hand held electronic race car game was bored with for a copy of The Cars debut album in 1979. It blew me away, I've never been bored with it. This song Drive reminds me of working on Christmas break from music school (GIT, MI) in Hollywood. I was back in Hilliard,Ohio commuting to Westerville,Ohio to wire control boxes for traffic lights at intersections. I was so touchy mentally...full of dreary winter melancholy...as this song is played, entering the 5pm rush hour traffic back home.
That reminds me of a bitch I banged a long time ago. Doritos chips ARE NOT the way to go bruh. Fuck the bullshit saved your life ordeal when we got pizza.
A local Radio station WBOS had free lunchtime concerts inside South Station in downtown Boston. The acoustics were great. I saw many many sold out headliners the day after sellout performances in Boston and Providence. The concerts were low key 30-45 minute sets. There were about 30-40 folding chairs in the area. I wish the still held them there.
I remember this gig, it was in boston at south station (literally the train station) I didn't want to because I thought it was going to be ben doing all his solo stuff. but my buddy's dragged me there anyway (I lived about 20 minutes away) wow was I surprised, great show, the camcorder does no justice, I was fucken floored at how good he sounded live. if I remember correctly he did all his old stuff from the cars first album and some candy o songs. nice to see this posted.
Ditto, I went on my lunch break from my office next door. Ended up missing a meeting but it was worth it. Great show from a BRILLIANT & Gifted talent gone WAY too soon.
So talented, read the book "Lets Go" that was recently out. He was a rock star from the get go! He was an amazing guy. He lived for his music to the end. ❤
Yes!...warm, full, inviting, sensual...like I imagine he was....will always wish I could have met him... thanks, itsanorangysky...its just a broken lullaby
There are several more song's, form this session, that have been uploaded. They are fantastic little gem's like this one is. The beginning of the session, when he come's out on the stage Intro and Too Hot To Stop with BYE BYE LOVE being the last song and TOTALLY ROCKS IT!!! He was not diagnosed with cancer till 2000, he sit's down cause he is just that good!! You wont see many singer's who can sit down and still sing the same. It is a gift to some, as he was a gift to us.
You're both right. Ben, especially in the early days when image/looks helped a band break through as much as the music, was essential to the Cars' success. He is one of the best front men in rock history with his looks, voice, and charm. Ric's songwriting was huge, of course, as it carried the band to continued and greater success during the 80s. Smart move by Ric to let Ben sing "Drive"--Ric knew whose voice was needed on this track.
Essa banda é boa, mais essa qualidade musical está péssima e outra o teclado e um instrumento de harmonização e aqui por estar bastante alto seu volume está simplesmente estragando o show.
thank's for loading this for all of us to enjoy. First of all I want to say this is my favorate song of the 80's, Benjamin Orr a great american singer, songwriter and musician. no doubt he has touched lives, certainly mine as a teen, and now as an adult. RIP Ben Orr you will be missed but never forgotten!!! from Lance
Isn't it amazing 15 years on we are still thinking of him and wishing he were still here? I just today found out he was born and raised in my now city of Lakewood OH - I see why Ohioans ( me now) still mourn. Guess I never noticed the Cleveland shirts . . . He'll be up there making music and I'll get to hang out some day.
I have no idea why I think of him? I have played music for 30+ years and somehow, someway, his voice still inspires me. I guess I think of him as the Cars, not Ric. He was so chill and a great voice. Rip Ben, rip...
Susan Bednar Susan, WE NEVER "get over" anyone we admire, love etc. NEVER. I've mourned the deaths of many since I was 12. I'm 66. It still hurts and always will. And its OK, its only human. That's why we have memories and photos.
even though the recording of this performance wasn't the best, you can tell that with the full instrumentation and hard floor and tile on the walls, the acoustics were fantastic at that location.... I'll bet it sounded great.. beautiful job on the vocals Ben...
