That last interview with the Cars. I’ll never forget how Ben put on his brave face to be their with his band mates, his friends for so many years. Emaciated from the disease he had been stricken with. That was pretty courageous thing he did. I couldn’t do it.
Love reading everyone elses comments! Makes me happy to know that so many other people believe like myself that " Go Away" is one of the greatest songs by The Cars. Keyboards, vocals, guitars come together so sublimely to play this beautiful and poetic arrangement.
I've just discovered this beautiful song. Fantastic. Benjamin had one of the best voices ever heard. He was so unique in every sense. Oh God, why he had to leave us so early. Rest in peace, gorgeous Benjamin.
Such a good song, very dreamy and haunting, with a sense of longing behind it. The Cars were such an amazing band, and this should've been a single for them alongside Strap Me In. Door To Door was easily their most experimental album, with most of the songs sounding so different from one another but every single one being nothing short of amazing. Benjamin Orr, Ric Ocasek, both of you, thank you so much for your contribution to the music world. You were both amazing musicians and both of you are missed. Requiescat in Pace.
This was the song The Cars wanted to be the follow up single to You Are The Girl. The record company vetoed the idea in favor of Strap Me In. Big mistake. This could have been a massive hit. I love, love love it. 🥰
Strap Me In is a great song too though, both songs should've been singles, with Go Away being the last one. I'm shocked the record company vetoed the idea of this song being a single.
How have I never heard this song before? This bodacious groove. Maybe Door to Door wouldn't have flopped (comparatively speaking) if they had released this as a single... God knows I would have bought the 45. Thank you so much for posting this.
Yes, with a video (and not an artsy or sappy one either). We got all of three seconds to see Ben on Magic. Really crappy PR/Marketing/Management work back then. I was already off and chasing Michael Hutchence and INXS at this point. Still hold you responsible CARS Management!!!
So sad that this was the last album they cut with Benjamin Orr...but it truly is a exclamation point to their career. By this point as a band, they were so polished and tight that everything they played was an instant classic. I saw them five times in the 80s including the Door To Door tour. Little did I know it would be their last. Ben was always the consummate musician...talented, precise and professional. Often imitated never duplicated. RIP Ben...we all miss you.
Martin VanNostrand must’ve been an incredible experienced! I just became a fan even more as I got older, I wasn’t exposed to The Cars growing up in San Juan,Puerto Rico and raised as a Christian,but did listen and seen videos in the late 80’s as a Kid. Just recently found-out not to long ago that Orr passed in 2000 which broke me down. I actually listened to all there albums and now just purchased my 10 year old son a PRS guitar for Christmas 2018 which I know he’ll enjoy.
@@caribbeanyankee2986...they have quite a nice catalog of music. When they first hit the airwaves in the late 70s, no one else sounded like them and once they caught on you couldn't turn the radio without hearing one of their songs. I think it's neat that people are starting to discover them again. Yeah, it's not the same without Ben but he certainly lives on through the fans and their music. Cheers!
I knew little about The Cars. One listened occasionally on the German radio "You must think." But when I discovered Benjamin Orr among the dead singers in February 2018 on youtube, I was horrified that such a gorgeous person is no longer with us. From then on, I've been researching everything about him and The Cars. I was so pleasantly surprised by what a terrific singer Benjamin was. In the meantime, I think almost all of his videos I've watched . Every day I listen to his music and I can't get enough of it. I envy you for being in some of The Cars ' concerts. Great for you, because these are beautiful memories and they stay forever. I also read his biography, written by Joe Milliken, in December. I really liked it as I was able to learn a lot from Benjamin. He's really had an interesting life. For me, he is not one of the most beautiful rock singers, but also had one of the most beautiful voices. I would love to be his sister because then I wouldn't have to share him with other women. Beautiful description of Benjamin and his approach to music, he loved playing music and that love combined with his talent and dedication made him a class act.

Incredibly haunting long. This should have been a huge hit single. I miss these guys and that era. Love ya Ben and Ric. I hope you are resting easy now.

On the last Cars album before they reunited without Ben Orr in the early 2000s, Door to Door was the first and last album to be fully produced by Ric Ocasek. They wanted to take control from John "Mutt" Lange who did the Heartbeat City album, which in the end was their most successful album. Door to Door did not do nearly as well commercially, but still had the #17 hit "You Are the Girl" in the Top 100 as well as "Strap Me In" which peaked at #85. Nothing like Drive, Heartbeat City, You Might Think from the other album but it was an understated final success for the five band members. I should note, "You Are the Girl" was co-written by Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr - the one song they wrote together on the album (one other song Ocasek wrote with Greg Hawkes).

No, it's not your imagination. This song really flows smoothly. "Dazzled by your sweet lips touching on me....." sounds pretty sexy to me! It's hard for Ben to not sound sexy.
I suppose privacy, dark sunglasses act like an emotional barrier. He knew his eyes were like a gate way towards his inner person, not the Ben Orr rock and roll persona. Maybe there was some issues he was undergoing And wanted to keep it aside of his performances and artistry. In the beginning of his career his beautiful eyes and angel like features were the clickbait for work, fame, women and God knows what. Another guess is that he wanted his artistry to shine and keep the "Beautiful Ben Orr" image at bay.
BTW Elliot And Ric used sunglasses regularly back then. Another reason maybe health, when you feel sick and must work, with hard lighting fixed right at your face, sunglasses are the solution. Maybe... 😁🤷🏻
Ben said when he was on stage it was a acting job. For those that knew him he was nothing like the image he projected on stage. He was quiet and humble. Suffered from depression at times but got over that in his later years.RIP Ben.

Harmony- It might be due to the fact he had an actual eyelid condition in which the upper lid of his left eye (the right eye to anyone facing him) hung lower than that of his right eye, and lower than usual, covering more of the eye, making it always look half open. I think he was self conscious about it at times, and it was a reason he chose to wear sunglasses. That doesn’t mean it was *the* reason he wore sunglasses, but I think it was a factor. It is noticeable, yet easy to miss when seeing his gorgeous face.
