Thanks for the updated review. The mount is rated for 7kg, and the combination of lens+camera is less than 2kg, so the imprecise tracking at 1 minute is troubling. I'm considering getting the mount to replace a skyguider pro, and now I'm hesitating because my main kit would include a camera with the samyang 135mm.

For clip-in filters for Canon EOS R look at Astronomik from Germany. They have a selection of narrowband filters, including Ha. Thanks for the review!

Thank you for this video. Benro: Used it with a 50mm Voigt at f2 and was able to have pictures with zero star trailing for exposures to 2-3 minutes. So yes, very happy with it as well. Hope they will make it easier to do panorama while tracking. For the moment rather difficult while the daytime panorama tool is working very, very well. Don’t now if it’s better since the last update. Also a great tool is the Atoll, backed it and looking out for it. Nice to see you're enthousiast about the device.

Have you tried using something like the 135mm or even 200mm?

Until now not…will definitely try when I’m going back to Tenerife. Must also admit that some of my 5 minutes tests resulted in 50% images without any star trails (using a 50 mm on a 24 Mpx camera, Sony A9).

Great review. I've had mine for about 2 months now (project backer 680). While my main use is for landscape & wide field, I'm looking forward to improved tracking to give deep sky a try. That ATOLL looks cool... I'll have to give it a look once it hits general availability, since the project is closed now.

Thanks for the follow up review. I bought the Polaris after watching your first review, although I haven't had a chance to really work it yet. I have actually managed a few 60sec exposures @600mm (but not consistently) which I expect will improve with multi-star alignment - so fingers crossed!

600mm? it sounds much better than the issues with 135mm shown in this video. Have you used it with 135-200mm lenses?

Was tempted by one, but they've made it so it can't be mounted on a large tripod with a wide yolk. When you shut it down the vertical adjustment knob will collide with the tripod.

Yes unfortunately. Even the levelling plate has to be taken off for that. But it’s possible to just turn it off without making it retract to the „closed” position

I’m having a rough time with accurate tracking. I’ve been using the Skywatcher az-gti with equatorial firmware where I finally figured out how to get 6 second exposures using a 800mm lens, but have still been unhappy with the results. For Xmas I received the Benro Polaris and am now back at square one. Using my canon 105mm f4 L I can’t even get round stars at 2 seconds. The tripod is level, I follow the alignment setup but still get too much movement. What am I doing wrong?

Kamil, super helpful video as usual. I have a quick question. I just started using this and frankly used it just once to get a feel for the unit. Once the camera cable was connected to the camera and the Benro and I turned the app on. When I double clicked the home icon, the Polaris skewed to its home position. Then I calibrated and after that was successful, I chose Betelgeuse as the star to “polar align”. This is what I am confused with. Once I program the # of shots, shutter speed etc in the app, hit start tracking and swiped the start button, the live view from the back of the camera disappeared. Actually it had disappeared even before (I honestly cannot remember at which stage and I’ll try to remember next time) and showed up on the app’s screen. Is this normal? I was hoping to use the live view on the back of the camera to focus the stars but I had to eyeball it and do it on the phone’s app screen. What would be your recommendation? Also, another question is after the initial alignment using any star, can I use another DSO to track and photograph or the alignment will be messed up? I’m so used to using the MSM’s polar alignment process that I’m kind of confused. Thanks for your kind input to help me.

I have been having difficulty with getting the Polaris to work with the camera in portrait orientation for vertical panos. For some reason "L bracket mode" isn't staying selected. Frustrating me no end.

I was wondering can you also use the knobs to manually move polaris to a desired position? If not, why are there knobs right? Nice video.
@kamilkp
@kamilkp Год назад
Yes knobs can be used to reposition polaris
@bjnslc
@bjnslc Год назад
You don't ever want to use the knobs to reposition the head, unless you have a lot of time and you like pointless chores. The knobs move the head very slowly. There is no clutch, so you can't bypass all the turns to position the head more quickly and fine tune manually. The app's virtual joysticks are the only sensible way to control the head.

They are handy to do the star alignment which is where you want slow and precise movement

Hi Kamil, Just an FYI I did get my ATOLL Rotator for Nikon a few weeks ago. They apparently sold out on the website for the initial launch. I pre-ordered and only had to wait about 3 weeks. Works on all my lenses where the lens doesn't have a rotation ring on it. 14-24mm, 16-35mm and 24-120mm. Thanks much for this review.....

@kamilkp
@kamilkp Год назад
Try to do a 360 panorama of the sky with a 35mm lens in winter at -10 C with a Star Adventurer (I’ve done it) and then you might appreciate the power of Polaris that can do that by itself while you sit in a warm car. Just saying that Polaris can do much more than just tracking the sky.
@bjnslc
@bjnslc Год назад
It says a lot when the rationalization for Polaris is createing a 360 night sky panorama. I have one. Most of the functions are buggy and some promised features like holy grail time lapse are still missing. Camera support is spotty. There are new, cheaper, and more reliable goto equatorial photo mounts from Sky Watcher and iOptron. If Benro delivered all the non-astro functionality, I'd say the price makes sense for some users. For deep sky photographers (I'm not one) I think it's a waste of money.
