Have you experienced your lawn mower not stating or having low power? And when you or the repair shop checks into it you find that one of your pushrods has bent? In this video we show what causes a pushrod to bend and we explain what can be done to prevent it from happening again. REMEMBER, HEAT IS THE BIGGEST KILLER OF ANY INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE!! That is true with lawn mower engines, car & truck engines, motor cycle engines, boat engines, etc. Be sure to take the time to make sure your cooling system is working properly. This is even more important in air cooled engines such as the ones found in most lawn mowers. Take the time to remove the shrouds every year before you start mowing to make sure that no mice or anything else has got in there and built a nest or chewed through any wires or hoses. A valve guide coming loose and causing a bent pushrod is minor compared to having a mouse build a nest in your cooling fins and having fuel leak from the fuel line that they chewed through which could be absorbed by the mouse nest and cause a fire hen the engine gets hot. Bottom line is keep your engine clean and it will last you longer, cost you less money, and less headaches.

The things I'm learning late in life that should have been taught in high-school about house and home equipment maintenance. Our educational system is a disservice to us all.

Some additional thoughts... I have a Kohler Vtwin that eats push rods every couple of years. The first time I dismantled the entire engine and replaced the rods and reseated the valves that's when I found burnt sticky oil in the intake valve guides I cleaned it all off and replaced the push rods and all was well untill wnother mouse decided to build a nest in the engine blocking airflow again and sticking the intake valves. The funny part is that the engine ran perfectly the previous time I cut the gras and only stuck the valves after sitting...this is the clue that it wasn't the dreaded valve guides coming lose but instead the coking valve guides from overheating. Just bend the push rods back and clean the guides and put it all back together and your back in business. Every failure doesn't doom the engine and the push rods do just fine if your careful not to crimp the tubes by using a plastic mallet. So the take here is not to automatically doom the engine to needing new heads until you inspect the valve guides first, and lucky for you all this requires is to take off the valve covers and have a look .

Infrequent oil changes, overheating from debris building up on cooling fins (need to remove engine shroud and clean and check), excessive valve clearance, and other reasons for bent push rods. It definitely happens more than you would think.

Wonderful, Thank you for posting this. I have a 2 year old 19L232-0036-F1 that snapped the Exhaust Push rod. I purchased a new Rod, and installed it and started to bend that after turning the engine over by hand w/o the plug in. Now thing back after removing the valves and doing a head/valve cleaning, I remember the exhaust valve guide being higher than the Intake. New Cylinder head coming up....& regarding the overheating issue. This engine is in a dusty ,dirty environment, but there was NOT any buildup of debris in the fins, or the cooling fan, and am at a loss to figure out why it may have over heated to the point that this could have happened.

good info. The valves should be checked, adjusted periodically to prevent and or catch it before a bent push rod occurs.
@EshlemaniaTV
@EshlemaniaTV 5 лет назад
Valve adjustments are something that way too many people neglect. We know that most people believe that as long as it starts and stays running then the engine is fine. This is something that good repair shops have been adding to spring service programs and most customers don't have a problem with paying the few dollars extra when it's explained to them and shown that the manufacturer lists it in the manual as a requirement after a certain amount of hours.

After beating my head against the wall working on a Vanguard because I can’t get the valves lash to stay when I rotate the engine and the pushrods wanna keep falling out and I did have a bent pushrod and bought another steel push right on the intake I watch this video and I noticed that on both heads I see the valve guide pushed up on the intake so thank you very much because now I know what the hell’s wrong but the engine didn’t overheat so I don’t know why this happened to mine

We know a lot of people (including seasoned mechanics) that have replaced the bent pushrod, and then bent the new one just by turning the engine over by hand. All because they didn't look further to see what actually cause the bent pushrod.

Excactly what i was in search of...!!! Thank You for this video!!! My push rods were missing completely...??? Bought the mower used and have no clue as to where they went...??? And i honestly don’t see a way for them to have (dropped) into the oil pan yet i do plan on searching for them there...Otherwise the factory Left them out 😳🤷‍♂️ or previous owner took them out because the mower generates enough power to mow without them!!! I’ve obviously been mowing without them for quite some time and couldn’t tell by the sound of the engine... no backfire no spitting and sputtering no unusual noises at all-went to tune it up and one plug looked Great (as if it hadn’t been used) maybe it hadn’t been 😂😂😂 Thanks again and I’ll be sure to subscribe to your channel ✅

Awesome! Thanks for the tips. I inherited a Husqvarna with a 23HP motor that was said to have "bent pushrods" i am going to take it apart once it warms up a bit and do some digging around. What the usual cost for a new head to replace it and it sound like its pretty easy to replace?

Retail on a new complete cylinder head kit for these Briggs Intek twin cylinders is around $150 or so. But that can vary greatly depending on where you live and what dealership you talk to. It's not a not a difficult job to do. Just have a shop manual on hand and follow the directions.

Something in my Kawasaki engine on my Toro is ticking. I removed the valve covers and adjusted. It didn’t help. Everyone keeps saying oh Kawasaki’s are just noisy. Or oh that’s normal. It doesn’t sound normal to me. Can you take a look at my couple videos on my channel and see what you think?? There’s only about 6 videos total. All are less than 30 seconds. The engine doesn’t have any loss of power. The only thing that is odd is sometimes when I go to throttle up from idle it takes a second to catch up if I go to quick.

Kawasaki has started making kits for cylinder heads. But so far it's only for certain models of engines. So if there is no kit available for yours then you would either reuse your hardware or purchase everything new individually.

Mice love to nest in the shroud..the nest restricts air flow which cellos the engine and the head expands faster than the guide so the guide walks outta the head so use moth balls or hot sauce when you don’t use the machine for the season

Hey all crapsmans aren't cheap. Many older crapsman mowers I sell after refurbishing are heavier duty than many newer john deere riders. Any engine that overheats can develop this condition. Rocker covers leakin oil and buildup occures. I'm working on a 24 vtwin intek now. .
@jimknowlton342

A bent rod does not mean the engine is destroyed does it? I suppose being overheated might be a more major issue. I am looking at an old Diesel tractor that has a bent rod and I figure I could do a full rebuild over time.
@EshlemaniaTV
@EshlemaniaTV 2 года назад
A bent rod means that some other component of the engine has malfunctioned. So it really depends on what happened to cause the rod to bend.

@EshlemaniaTV 5 лет назад
Yep! I've seen this on Kawi's too. The ones I used to see it on the most was on the horizontal V-twins in the John Deere zero turns. Horizontals in zero turns usually struggle for cooling air more than the verticals so it was never a surprise when we would get one with a valve guide that had moved.

I've encountered the bent push rod syndrome with a used Briggs snowblower. I've since jerry rigged the push rod guides by drilling a hole through the side of the head, and indenting the guides, and inserting a set screw. I installed new push rods and after adjusting the clearance, when I hand crank the engine slowly, the rods are bending when trying to open the valves. I's starting to think that the rods I bought are too long, or can anyone think of anything else? And it could be I'm adjusting the clearance the wrong way. tks anyone with more knowledge than me, which I don't have much have, Merry Christmas to all.

Is it possible to bang the guide back down where it belongs and peen it? Or is the head just junk.
@EshlemaniaTV
@EshlemaniaTV 5 лет назад
Some people will try it and think that they've just saved them selves a few dollars, but in the end it's only going to cost more time and money because you'll have down time again and will finally have to spend the money to replace the head. Better off to just fix it right the first time around and make sure your cooling fins are clean so the new head lasts.
@court2379
@court2379 4 года назад
@@EshlemaniaTV Seems like it would be fairly easy to drill and tap a tiny hole tangent at the interface between the guide and head. Then put a set screw in it and peen the top of the hole over so it cannot back out. The threads then take the loads instead of a press fit that has become loose. Peening the guide it might work too, but only if peening over the top of a chamfer on the guide or a groove in its side. I think these are smooth and not flush at the top, so would not hold tight just smashing material into the side of the guide. The new head probably runs around $150 though, so depends on what people's time is worth, and if it is work for someone else.

weak valve springs? compare a new spring to the old one

Compare a valve spring in one of these Briggs Intek engines to one in a Kohler Command engine and you'll see a huge difference. Compare a used valve spring from a Briggs Intek to a new one for a Briggs Intek and it's not going to be that noticeable if at all.

Will really bad black oil cause this?
@EshlemaniaTV
@EshlemaniaTV 4 года назад
Really black oil is a sign of oil that has been burnt. So either it was in there too long and was not helping to lubricate properly which will cause high temps from friction, or the oil burnt from an external cooling problem such as clogged cooling fins or missing fan blades. Either way, black oil is a sign of an engine that was running at high temps and over heating is the primary cause of this failure.

Only takes about a 3/8" opening for mice to get in. We see this a LOT around here in farm country. Mice get in through the shields and build a nest under the shroud. We've even seen mice jammed between the flywheel and magneto because there was no way of knowing they were under there when the owner started the equipment.
