After two months, the withdrawals of 1mg daily ativan were tortuous and debilitating. This was the case even during the two months of tapering that followed. The guidance and advice from Benzo Buddies saved me. My doctor would have kept me on Ativan (rhymes with Satan) forever, and I had to insist it wasn't "all in my mind" as the doctor suggested. Finally convinced the doctor to work with me and slowly titrated the tapering thru a compound pharmacy. This was the most painful and tortuous chapter of my life, and therefore strongly advocate avoid these brain damaging drugs.

Im just on week 1 of half dose .5mg Adivan. I never abused just took at bed time or once in awhile during a melt down. Dr. Gave me for years. Never was told its addictive & hard to get off of. The pills crumble so after a few more doses half to cut that in half & really worried what my body will do when no dose left. Dr. Just thinks its mild!

Prescribed Clonazepam for 15 years. Taken off of it almost cold turkey 2 1/2 years ago. 8 months of terror, probably psychosis. Led to severe alcohol abuse. Currently feel mentally & emotionally broken. Major depression and suicidal ideation. I don't remember what I felt like before this nightmare. Now I'm stuck in the substance abuse treatment system. Through it all, perhaps the worst thing is people not believing me. I'm 49 and lost everything. Reasons to continue living like this are running out.

I had severe DP/DR and anhedonia and I found ways to defeat it! I had 167 of 200 symptoms including those you mention, but most are long gone. Withdrawal can be brutal, but there are lots of ways to create moments of heaven in hell. I was disabled for 20 years by benzo's and an antidepressants, misdiagnosed as 5 "incurable" diseases. 6 months after I'd quit 5 prescriptions, I began recovering my health! I got my life back , and you can too. I agree with you, Gregory, to avoid these brain-damaging drugs. Had I known even a half of the potential side effects I'd NEVER have taken them. Good luck to all trying to quit. You CAN quit and we DO heal!

If you have used one of them for an extended (6 months) length of time or longer you will experience tolerance and the drug will have to be increased to get the same effect. It's important to taper off slowly and safely with support. There are Facebook groups and an Internet support group, Benzo Buddies. What you experience isn't true insanity -but medical madness, and it gets better. Lots of us have experienced that and recovered. All I had before taking benzos was insomnia -- after I quit I experienced the cruise ship buffet of mental illness symptoms! It's been going on for a year now. 7 months ago I quit taking Xanax with medical assistance and have been clean since, the tremors are still there and so are all the other stuff I suspect is either long term side effects and/or withdrawal symptoms: Body zaps, jumpy, throat getting narrow, gasping for air, lip tremors, heart palpitations, feeling of getting electrocuted etc.

I have actually turned a bit of a corner these past few months and can see real recovery now. It's been a very long recovery for me - going back about a decade when I suffered injury from Paxil. I didn't know it was the drug causing the problems. I was also prescribed Cymbalta which I tapered off of from 2014-2016 and went into a protracted withdrawal from that as well. Also, half the battle is knowing that symptoms can be withdrawal effects from the drug- not a new mental health problem. Peer support groups help us get through too. Try benzo buddies forum here: www.benzobuddies.org/forum/index.php

Just started Klonopin after months and months of debilitating panic attacks, in ER 3 times, was hoping I was gonna die. Klonopin has literally saved my life. On Celexa and Seroquel past 2 months has been living hell, lost 35 pounds, waves of panic all day long. People love to say how horrible Benzo is but please tell me what else will work. I’ve been on clonazepam for 13 months. I was having different side effects like akathisia but didn't know what it was that was causing me to shift my weight from foot to foot. Between doses, if I allow too much time between doses I go straight into panic attacks, can’t remember anything. I feel like I’m gonna die, that's the only thing I can compare the withdrawal. I don't abuse my prescription. but I’m sick of being tethered to ( addicted) this drug. It should be banned. We should be able to sue the makers of this poison. It will probably take me close to a year to taper off clonazepam, then I will go through other bodily problems like Jordan Peterson. My psychiatrist will taper me as slowly as I want, but I think with covid getting worse, or an EMP bomb shutting down all computers I would have no way to get refills. I may be tripping a little, but this is scary.

Unlike opiates, benzo causes permanent brain damage with long term use. Withdrawl is only the beginning. After you clear that, you have the permanent effects to deal with.

@pm7225 4 года назад
Forest Denizen thanks for your response what do you consider long term use?
@04Serena
@04Serena 4 года назад
Forest Denizen The damage is not always permanent. I was on benzos for 30 years and while it was brutally hard to get off of them, I’m pretty much back to baseline now. I hike, do distance cycling, and live a pretty normal life. The drugs do alter our GABA receptors, but most eventually heal.

Forest Denizen In many cases people do heal. I was on benzos and SSRIs for over 30 years, had a terribly difficult withdrawal, and I still healed. It took some time, but I’m better now than before I went on the drugs.
