Guest Bio: Joanna Moncrieff, MD is a Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College London, and works as a consultant psychiatrist at the North East London Foundation Trust. She has been writing about the over-use and misrepresentation of psychiatric drugs since the 1990s and she has also researched and written about the history, politics and philosophy of psychiatry more generally. She is currently leading UK government-funded research on reducing and discontinuing antipsychotic drug treatment (the RADAR study), and collaborating on a study to support antidepressant discontinuation. In the 1990s she co-founded the Critical Psychiatry Network to link up with other, like-minded psychiatrists. She is the author of numerous papers and her books include A Straight Talking Introduction to Psychiatric Drugs Second edition (PCCS Books), published in September 2020, as well as The Bitterest Pills: The Troubling Story of Antipsychotic Drugs (2013) and The Myth of the Chemical Cure (2009) (Palgrave Macmillan).

I had some mild/moderate social anxiety (which was stressful, but I still led an active life) and got put on antidepressants for that as a teenager, which made me super tired, so the doctor said being tired is a symptom of depression, so I got put in a higher dose, which made me even MORE tired, so they added MORE PILLS, which made me MORE tired and gain lots of weight and messed up my skin, blood sugar and thyroid, which was miserable. So, I can kind of relate.

@@janekotze6242 over the years I've interacted with many psychiatrist on the job (I'm a social worker). In my experience they are either cold, callous, uninterested, cynical and detached (possibly as a defense mechanism), or very caring, empathetic and invested, and filled to the brim with guilt. All of those in the second category are invariably inches away from burn-out at all times. I'm not saying it necessarily means they're trying to cope with the fundamental hypocrisy of their professional role, but I'm sure it has something do with it. Psychiatry has been locked for more than a century in a deep contradiction, between its humanitarian intentions on one hand, and the social control function society entrusts it with on the other. That contradiction creates a profound ethical burden for everyone involved.

My Anxiety was ignored by my doctors for many years , when events sent me into severe ptsd , then they put me strait on fluoxetine then escitalopram , then just left me with it to cause its secret damage in the back ground with f---all duty of care , it took a while but appeared to work at first which was helpful but missing and or stopping this drug lets you know the damage its actually causing , (when I actually stopped ), Its a teeth grinding depression with super adhd confusion and mental torment that lasts for months and then some . Unfortunately my depression and terrible ocd has gotten so bad recently that I’ve been considering trying something else again that may help, I’ve been in bed for a couple of days, no appetite and not showered for 4 days. I crave sleep. This life and my mind it too much to deal with. I’m not even religious but I’ve started praying for something to help me if there was anything out there as I don’t feel I can do it alone. I sincerely wish you well in moving into greater healing and peace. May I suggest one thing which can help all of us. Take a sheet of paper and write out things you are grateful for, no matter how small the things may be. Keep adding to your list. Then focus on those things, even when the feeling of gratitude may not be there. The change in focus may help a day at a time. All the best.

I'm long over the philosophy of the specific aeteology of disease, mental conditions especially. However judicious drug use can be efficacious in the right context. Psychiarty is rarely that right context. Sedation has more benefits for those close to the patient diagnosed with a mental condition. Psych meds are often just a chemical straight jacket for the patient. One day when we're collectively more civilized psychiatry will acknowledge this but don't hold your breath waiting.
