You might have a point. I still think 1 or 2 friendlies before Copa is too little too late to start experimenting. The purpose of the back 3 isn't to make us better in this game. It's to become more familiar with the formation and the benefit will come later. Also you can leave Dest/Robinson high. The formation is a flexible as you want it to be.

Leaving Dest/Robinson high in a game like this not only reduces our offensive capabilities versus more traditional offensive players occupying those territories on the field, but it also exposes the other problem of a back-3 against T&T. Those wingbacks will only learn from the formation against an opponent that will require them to play the dual-purpose role, i.e. an opponent they'll have to defend against and also contribute in attack. They'll just be glorified wingers in these games, and they'll actually risk learning that they don't need to be mindful of their defensive responsibilities, because those will be minimal. If the interest is in getting the team organized and familiar with a back-3 as early as possible (starting today of course, because as early as possible would have been a previous camp), then you gain more by just doing so within training at this stage instead of against T&T. Surely we are doing some full field drills and/or starting-O versus starting-D types of exercises in camp. Hell, even if we were doing full 11v11 setups during portions of training with starters versus subs, our subs will provide a better test than the T&T players. This camp shouldn't be solely focused on tactics for this pair of games, and surely we can find time during training to incorporate some future facing tactics, right? To your point, we can do something to learn about a back-3 within this window even though it would sacrifice a little of the on-field performance versus T&T. My opinion is we do that by using training time to work on the back-3 against our own higher quality teammates. That sacrifices some of the prep for T&T specifically, but we shouldn't suffer from that with the talent gap. And in this way we test the back-3 in a more applicable way to how we would need to use it against better competition. Then we use the next window against better competition to apply it in the game.

We have another CB starting in the prem. And Richards/Ream are both guys that have proven they look comfortable in the best league in the world. There's no reason to experiment with Maloney playing CB just yet.

@@11Yanks Trusty definitely should be in the picture as well. I think some of the problems though with him and Ream as examples of two starting EPL CBs is that Trusty is on a team which is in the EPL but is much more representative of Championship level talent, and Ream will be nearly 39 years old in the summer of 2026. Of our EPL rostered CBs, I think Richards has the most likely opportunity to be one of the starting CBs in 2026, but those other two have big questions marks for the reasons I noted. Therefore, I'd expand the pool of CBs by seeing if Maloney could be a fit. I'd also say that in the context of your interest in seeing a back-3, having a broader pool of CBs to utilize only helps that as a viable option. And I'd say that if the opinion is we need to start exposing the group to the possibility of a back-3 sooner rather than later, then the same should be argued of exposing a player with experience playing CB to that potentially being his niche with USMNT sooner rather than later. Maloney isn't going to beat out Adams when healthy, nor a double pivot of Musah/McKennie/LDT (in some combination), nor Johnny in my opinion as a more traditional depth option at the 6. Why not have a frank conversation with him that at this time he's a depth choice and the more practical way into the lineup is at CB which is a position that no player has staked a serious claim for unquestioned inclusion come 2026?

Both you and Tac drop Miles since his injury...he hasn't shown he has missed a step, until he does im OK with him, sure he makes some mistakes but they seem to be less and his recovery speed is still top notch
