I used to repair his Rolls Royce and Cadillac in the late 80’s… He used to have us in stitches as soon as he walked through the garage doors. Our Christmas do’s were always at the embassy . He is missed by many
Absolute class this man. Saw him in the Embassy in 1984, unfortunately I sat in his view and had the absolute piss taken out of me throughout. After the show he came up to me , shock my hand, asked my name and where I was from and apologised as he couldn’t help himself to single me out that evening. He was very polite, had a chat with us all for a few minutes and said if we come back again, he’ll not pick on me as he’s exhausted the fat jokes but he’ll pick on one of my mates with the skinny bastard jokes. Hilarious and saw him a good few times into the late 90’s before I moved south.👍🍻
If he was around today he wouldent last a night.. to many people are to sensitive and have destroyed comedy..comedians are scared shirtless incase they hurt someones feelings..but it just shows in the way he came over to u after and says thanks for the laugh, that's all it was..that's the way it should always be but unfortunately Europe is gone to shit..
I was drinking a coffee one morning at the Michael Wood Services on the M5. Bernard sat at the next table with 2 minders and winked at me and said " Good Morning Son". We chatted about a recent video release from one of his Embassy Club shows and he ran off a couple of gags. I nearly burst my sides. Shortly after, I got up to leave and he said "Cheerio Son, don't forget your Newspaper". Bloody lovely guy. Bless him.
i'm surprised he had one minder nevermind two, he was born in rough times and was street wise and could look after himself put it that way, then again if he bumped into an Esther Rantzen fan club he might need a bit of help
I remember seeing him at a club in the Black Country......that night it was a pea souper and he was supposed to be on stage at 10pm, by 11.30 we were all considering going home, he aint coming....manager came on stage said that Bernard had still managed to just get here and was prepared to do the act if we wanted, place was still packed....first thing he did was put a wad of cash behind the bar so EVERYONE could have a few drinks on the house, apologised for being late and then did a two hour set....still one of the funniest shows I've ever been at, fucking hilarious.....now that shows you the type of man he was, genuine, sincere and a bloody good comic
What people overlook is that Bernard Manning away from his stage act was a very generous and polite man. He donated a brand new minibus to a war veterans charity in Hull, and spoke to each and every person and was polite and respectful.
@d I reckon your jesting .Manning had an act but it made people laugh. Ask you the woman that claim what saville did they wont laugh. Saville was a monster preying on his victims .there is no comparison .
@d @Ernie Scullion. You shouldn't have responded to this half wit. Plenty of people both good and bad had manners. This idiot picks out Saville just to intimidate. This guy is just a fool clowning around. Ignore him.
Been revisiting this clip for the last 10 years or so. Captures the true classic comedic timing of Big Bernard doing what he did best - making us old-schoolers with a sense of humour laugh out loud!
God bless Bernard. Saw him live once and he was hilarious. I know he was an acquired taste but he was a brilliant comic. This interview with Mark Lamar is fabulous.
@@tomdavies6368 If you're not old enough to have witnessed and understood the contrasts between back in the good old days and now, then you're bound to think things are good. You've never known any different.
@@bro70 Mark Lamarr said that in repsonse to Manning's final joke. How is a joke like that unacceptable now? It's still totally fine. It's the racist stuff that's not acceptable now, and rightly so.
I'm Canadian and i came across this by accident. He's friggin hilarious! Ive never heard of him before. I love comics and im familiar with some Brits or Aussie or international comedians but for some reason ive never heard of Bernard Manning. Im gonna go watch other videos of him.
Somebody told me, In the Embassy club, people used to hold their water. If they went to take a piss he would take the piss. One of his associates went to the loo, he had big ears. "You could take off with those fucking ears" Not kind, but funny.
@@quincee3376 I am from Manchester and Bernard manning was I just want to say to you defiantly watch all of his videos ur,ll love them to bits he was easily the best comedian to walk the planet mate, godbless you sir,
The King Of Comedy and Manchester legend. Part of the city died when Bernard passed away. I saw him several times. He was a brilliant live act. All the criticism about racism was undeserved
I saw Bernard a few times and he tailored his act to the audience he saw in front of him. In other words he knew just what would get the laughs, whether it be a stag night for coppers or a mixed audience. It was his job to make them laugh and I never saw him fail.
Bernard Manning was a legend, most didn’t understand his humour and called him racist, sexist and anything else they could think of. But he was one of the true greats of our time.
It wasn’t his comedy that people called him a racist. He admitted to be being a racist outside of his routine. One example was on the Mrs Merton show. If you support him that’s upto you..but stop trying to cover up his racist views..he wasn’t ashamed so why are you?
Morgan and the other above - You two should stick to progressive woke political echo Chambers like The Guardian online, or whatever is your pick. You don't know what racism is, not at all. Perhaps try watching Nysh Poomar - a real bygot type of 'racist comic' (and that word COMIC is undeserved in it's use attached to that muppet who despises white indigenous British people and believes his terd doesn't stink).
@@BigboyRoy100 I know exactly what racism is thank you! Spending a night having my teeth pushed back and my mouth stitched up in A+E will do that funny enough when your a 14year old kid!Not Sure weather you have kids but just try to imagine for just a minute! your child coming home looking like they ve been in a car accident and you find out it was all down to them looking different! Would you say that's alright! Manning and people like yourself try to normalize racial hatred like your trying to do now but you have no idea! But as I ve found out in the last 40 something years racial hatred will always be around as long as there are people like yourself defending it. Keep up the good work.👍🏼
@@BigboyRoy100 I know racism better than you as I’ve suffered it during my lifetime. Again, he was unapologetic in his racist views, so why are you so sensitive about it? I personally wouldn’t pay money or waste my time watching him..but for those that like him including you…each to your own!
Absolute northern legend, told my mother in the embassy club "the size of them when you laugh I'm surprised you don't have black eyes" then roasted the old man about his limp. Then brought them drinks.
This is a completely and totally genuine funny person with all the right bits in all the right places. He’s a legend in the comedy world and an example of what we should remember when it comes to maintaining the ability to laugh at ourselves and everyone else in the name of humour 👌
This clip increased my respect for Lammar no end. I genuinely thought he would go down the "let's out manning as a non PC,racist sexist dinosaur" route.
the womble. Manning does'nt need any help in taking the 'non PC, racist sexist dinosaur route ' . And It seemed clear to me that Mark Lammar was laughing more AT Manning than with him !
yeah,i hate the mrs merton interview, she was as horrible to him as she accuses him of being about other people...2 wrongs dont make a right, bernard way funnier than caroline aherne, annoying voiced woman
amazing man,we seen him at glasgow barrowlands ,a few months before he died,we knew that was one of the last times he would perform ,and definately the last time we would see him ,i was rolling about laughing all night, crowd was amazing,he sang at the end.
That Michael Barrymore/ Cliff Richard gag was brilliant. That was before Barrymore was outed as gay. Just shows what goes on behind the closed doors of showbiz dress g rooms. Same when Schofield got outed and his friends all said they knew already.
yeh us nippers used to wash his car back in the 70's "lewis avenue" we were round there every week lol if there were 2 of us he would give us 50p "struck gold"
You might have known my pal, stage name Toni Mason, who used to sing at the Embassy club. She used to be frightened to death of him because he tried to bring her in to his jokes. She said he had a very soft side though, very generous man.
Absolutely brilliant!!!! I met Bernard, in Manchester, many times in the eighties. He bowed to no one, loved his mum immensely and was always funny as f+ck. 😘
Went to The Embassy a few times in the eighties. I booked it myself once and when I rang, it was Bernard who answered the phone! He knew the value of a quid.
He was a genius. Any gobshite can be offensive. To be offensive AND funny is the mark of a world class comedian. He was a decent guy by all accounts too which makes him even greater.
@@JohnSmith-it6hj haahah so funny when poor little peasants vote to be poorer. Turkeys voting for Christmas and blindly following the orders of their owners. Pure peasantry.
@@beniteztheconman humourless fuckwits like you who probably support the idea men can get pregnant , your left wing tosser ,this guy made people laugh you and your ilk make people want to die
Whenever I feel a little fed up l just put Bernard on you tube and l feel better for it. Like various people on here l also was lucky enough to meet him. Did loads for charity without going on about it. Yes he's not perfect but what a commedian.
Fantastic. R. I. P., Bernard. I saw Bernard Manning at The Embassy Club back in the late 80's, when I was a young man. Ralid, cunning, relentless and unforgiving, all of it superb. Yes, he was what we would now call racist. Back in the day, right or wrong, it was mostly tongue in cheek titillation. No, it isn't acceptable nowadays, nor should it be. But I don't think Bernard was really racist, it was an angle of humour - push until you get a reaction, then go for the jugular. Jovial, overweight, smiling man causes audiences to guffaw and gasp in shock and hilarity, beautifully mixed and delivered with such seeming ambivalence, at times it's hard to distinguish the man from the mundane. Thank you for posting the video. Brings back fond memories of days gone by and a time when we were allowed to laugh at ourselves. R. I. P. Bernard
It was horrible the way Caroline Aherne ambushed this man on her Mrs Merton show. I had a lot of time for Caroline but that was pure badness on her part. She did to him in public what ITV did to Benny Hill in private. Their comedy was of a time and they deserved more respect for the years of laughter they gave us. RIP Bernard, Benny and Caroline too.
Brilliant interview......Mark just let him go with it..unlike some others who stopped him from being himself or trying to set him up and fail Also he was a gentleman my Dad knew him and he did a lot for charity and it got overlooked because of his risque jokes.
A comic legend, people need to get back to being able to laugh at themselves and their individual differences without being offended, it's jut a joke, it's just an act, and one of the best acts ever:-).
Good on you Sonny. At the end of the day, he was a comedian who joked about everybody, no matter their race, sex, etc. Jokes were never meant to be taken seriously, but today's younger generation have been brainwashed into finding almost everything offensive.
I don't usually like mark lamarr but at least in this interview he didn't patronise and take the piss and be rude like Caroline o Herne as miss Merton did.
I'm a scouser & he's right about Tarbuck, I don't know how the hell people find him funny, last time he was on TV I think Everton had just won a trophy.
@@thephalcon9501 I doubt it. He was only on TV for about two years in the 1970s then spent the rest of his racist career as his crappy club in Manchester.
When in Rome you have to do as the Romans do. Manning worked the tough northern working mens clubs and paid his dues - he gave those audiences what they wanted, he'd have been eaten alive otherwise. I worked with him twice back in the 90s - he was a genuinely gifted comedian who could be funny with clean humour as equally as he could be dirty. His timing and quickfire wit was impeccable - and to be honest was a rather quiet, considered and slightly eccentric chap behind the stage curtain. You can argue forever about some of his comedic material - but taken purely on his technical ability to set up and deliver a joke hes the best stand up comic the Uk has produced.
The best British comic ever met him when he did a show in plymouth he came across a very sincere and genuine man. Did lots for charity but never boasted about it like todays non talented so called celebrity's
Ken Dodd whipes the floor with manning. Far superior without having to resort to racism and language to shock. Dodd had the gift, manning relied on fascism. There is a difference even in this time period.
He's not the best British comic ever as he had no crossover appeal in the states or any other English speaking countries. Plus his jokes were just working class jokes that factory workers would tell to each other that he, Jethro, Chubby Brown and Jim Davidson would regularly steal and use as their own. I'd advise broadening your horizons
@@lewisbarrah8804 Fascism is a political ideology that has nothing to do with the subject at hand. It isn't a catch-all term for everything you don't like. Stop using words that you don't understand, you uneducated oaf.
Compared to many other unfunny interviewers, Mark Lamarr showed quite a lot of respect to one of Britain's most funniest comedians who ever lived. 50+ years of making people laugh. How many modern comedians can claim that boast.
No modern comedians can make people laugh nowadays, what passes for 'comedy' now is pathetic & just unfunny. I'm glad I was born in the 60s in some ways.
Don't forget to start buying the dvd box sets , as in our later years the will be NOTHING to watch on tv or make us laugh and many of the old comedy dvds are slowly going on the banned lists in stores and online....@@andyexall8214
We lived round the corner from him when i was little and my dad knocked about with him, he got a lot of stick but they never mention how much Bernard raised for many charities, R.I.P.
Bernard Manning was born to tell jokes...just one very funny man....and he never forgot where he came from....and he was spot on about barrymore.......never understood how barrymore got so much T.V work .
Really enjoyed this interview, two very different comics from different era's but mark, laughed along with him and didn't attempt to lecture him either. And a younger audience enjoyed it too.
