What is Bertolotti Syndrome?
Bertolotti’s Syndrome is a unique cause of low back pain, particularly focused along the waistline slightly off to the side, that is often confused with sacroiliitis. Bertolotti’s Syndrome occurs when the lowest lumbar vertebra (L5) develops extra bone, causing friction against the sacrum, the base of the functional spine. This condition is often misdiagnosed, as imaging alone doesn’t always reveal the full extent of the problem.
Oftentimes, people with Bertolotti Syndrome deal with years and years of back pain due to poor quality care, from doctors who do not know how to properly diagnose this condition.
The good news: chronic back pain like this isn’t normal. And it doesn’t have to be what you live with. Dr. Haines has successfully treated people from all over the world with Bertolotti’s Syndrome, and there and surgical and non-surgical options to treat this condition.
Surgical options for Bertolotti’s Syndrome are now done relatively minimally invasively. Usually, this means removing the extra bone so that there is no more bone-on-bone grinding. Occasionally, there are circumstances where a fusion is more appropriate but this can also be done minimally invasively.
