Stump speech delivered Thursday, October 13, 2016 in the Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Behavior Seminar at Michigan State University. With demos including the Box Metaphor, the 2D Printer, and a first-time guest villain appearance by Conway's Game of Life. First of two linked lectures (see also • Indefinitely Scalable ... ).

Hello! Big fan of your work, I look forward to each and every one of your videos (especially the ones with demos! so do more of those! :P) I had a quick question: Have you read Permutation City, by Greg Egan? A lot of the themes of that book very very closely mirror the things you talk about!

I hadn't read _Permutation City_, but I have now; thanks for the pointer. Dave's four word review: "Top shelf alife porn!"

Hello! I've watched a few talks over the months. Somehow the "indefinite scaling" compared to finite computing reminds me of digital computing as compared to quantum computing - not in the details, but in that they are fundamentally different approaches. I wonder - similar to how quantum computing vastly outperforms digital for particular tasks, famous example factoring and breaking RSA, but is really not superior for other tasks (like, say, rendering video), would there be "killer applications" of indefinite scaling where von neumann computing can't keep up?

I'll volunteer an answer. Developing quantum computing to serve our traditional needs may drastically improve computation speeds, but it doesn't shift us away from our addiction to Determinism. I believe Dave addresses this question near the beginning of the video when he concedes that there are ways that we may be able to raise the ceiling. This however would seem to be a step deeper into the current paradigm.
