I think what you mean to say at 8:45+ is that the Podmic is tuned for spoken word, while the AT2020 is designed to do more.
@RebelTech1990
@RebelTech1990 3 года назад
Yea that’s definitely was my intention. I think I’ve made the point so many times that I left out specifics on applications. I mean it’s so obvious what it’s made for in sound, FRC, and even the name. They were very straight forward with the mic. Which one do you prefer?

@@RebelTech1990 I don't have the kind of environment for condensers. They just let too much through the noise gates at the same output levels so I'll pick a dynamic every time. So much so I don't even look at condensers anymore. I ordered a Podmic and it'll be here tomorrow. I will be doing some mods to it as well. The other mics I was considering in the price range was the Sennheiser E835 and AKG D5 as SM58s just don't pair well with my deeper voice without getting a lot of mud. I also have to admit I really like the looks of the Podmic as well. If for any reason I do not like the sound, I'll keep the chassy and swap out the capsule.

That’s really cool! I’m not there with my soldering. I tried to fix a pair of headphones and that was a mess. What capsule are you going to replace it with?
@ulfrinn8783

@@RebelTech1990 Right now, none. But if I decide I want another one then I wouldn't mind getting one from a Rode Procaster. Other mods I want to do is add an on-off switch to the back of it, and if my interface doesn't have enough clean gain I may get some JFETS, resistors, and diodes and build a Fethead inside it. Also, with the endcap off it there should be a small foam windscreen packed inside the mic, I'm going to try to stick a bigger, more substantial windscreen inside so I won't need one on the outside of the mic.

I’m starting my podcast and I’m really in between both. The reviews for the podmic are excellent but the at2020 win me over in every YT review. I’m using the H6 do you recommend for me to go with the at2020 for podcast?

It really depends on your recording space. If you can control the echo/reverb/outside noise, to a point where it's not that bad then sure go for the AT2020. If you have a noisier area then maybe a dynamic mic is more for you. Of course there are cheap ways to lower reflective surfaces and keep outside noise down, you just have to get creative. It comes down to the fact that a condenser will be more sensitive. I have a bunch more videos talking about other budget options, if you need a dynamic mic. That being said you will have more flexibility of the content you make with an AT2020. You can do much more with it (Singing, Acoustic Guitar, ect.). Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for checking out the video!

Hey, I appreciate the video comparison between the two microphones! So, I'm looking to get my first microphone setup and I was mainly looking at the at2020 due to a friends suggestion. I plan on it being an all purpose mic while also using it for voice over and vocals. With that said, I was also planning to use it for voice chatting on discord, but with the nature of condenser mics I was afraid about keyboard noise among other things. That is what started to get me to consider a dynamic microphone. With all that said, would you think that the noise reduction from something like the podmic is worth the tradeoff in sound quality that the at2020 has? And if not then is there anything I can do to eliminate or strongly reduce that background noise? (i do know about putting the mic closer to your face and lowering the gain, but I also wonder how bad that background noise is in the first place). Thanks for the help and sorry for the lengthy comment!

No worries about the long comment, I'm always writing novels in the comments. Probably will be in the one your reading now lol. As far as quality is concerned you will be better off with the 2020 or even the 2035 (Which I have video comparing the two of those if you are interested). Now as far as background noise, I feel the PodMic and the PD-70 are great options for the $100-$150 range. I prefer the PD-70 (I also have a bunch of videos on that as well). You will reduce the quality but not enough where it can't be fixed with some EQ. If you are using it in discord, then don't worry. They compress the crap out of the audio that it won't make a difference with any of the mentioned mics. To the major topic. If you can find a way to reduce reflective surfaces, that will help a lot. Next, the fan/keyboard noise. These are all cardioid polar patterns, so try to have your background noise right behind the mic. Keep in mind that it wont matter if it's too close, so give yourself a foot between your keyboard/fan. If you have a tower (aka desktop) then that saves time because that's probably on the ground. If it's a laptop then just be mindful of your mic placement. Last thing, if you are planning on being on camera or just strictly audio. If you are on camera with the mic, then this point may not be for you. It could be. When I first started out with my gaming channel, I had a MXL990. Terrible background noise. So I build a cardboard shield and threw in some cotton to reduce reflections. Not an ideal set up, but it worked. The reason why I say you might not wanna do it is because of how it looks. That being said you can dress it up and make it look cool. Here's my conclusion. I feel you would get more out of the AT2020 or AT2035. But the PodMic and PD-70 will be good with some limitations. Check out some other videos on these mics and if you want go check out the "Ghettohappy" channel. That was my gaming channel. I used the MXL990 in the beginning and then changed to a AT2020 so you can see the progression there. Hope this helped and thank you for checking out the video!

@@RebelTech1990 Thanks for the input, I'll be sure to check out the videos you mentioned there. I figured that something like the 2020 or 2035 would work fine, and for my purposes I'll probably be happier with the extra quality given for whatever voiceover i decide to do. Funnily enough i work at a tech retail store so I get the option of physically picking out a mic and interface with coworkers that know more than the average. I appreciate the help and hope you have a good one

Thanks for this 🙏🏼 I own a Sennheiser e835 for voice over in an untreated room. People say for voice over condensers are better so I'm planning on buying the at 2020 but I'm also planning to start two person podcast and for that I feel a second e835 is better so what do you suggest drop the money on condenser or I'm good with what I have?
@RebelTech1990
@RebelTech1990 3 года назад
I listened to the Sennheiser and when I compare it to the AT2020 I have some thoughts. First, I feel the tone of the 2020 is better. Probably because I have used it a lot and maybe because of the fact that it is a condenser microphone. Second, the Sennheiser will have a much better rejection of surrounding noise and/or reverb. Now it all depends on what you are using it for. If you are just doing a podcast and nothing more, then get another Sennheiser and you'll be good. That being said, in my opinion, I like the sound of some other dynamic microphones in that price range more than the Sennheiser. I'm just not big on handheld mics outside of a live show setting. That's just me, doesn't mean its right or wrong. On the other hand if you plan on making other stuff and/or working as a VO actor, then I would consider a condenser microphone. I would also think about treating the room for using a microphone for that. I just put out the video between the AT2020 and the AT2035, that might help. Also I have a video about making a $100ish booth. Hope this helped! Thanks for checking out the video!

@@RebelTech1990 wow, thanks for the elaborate reply. I went ahead and purchased a se electronics v7 for now. My plan is to treat my room as I use these mics for podcast and voice over and when it's sufficiently done I'll purchase a condenser for vo. I'll definitely be checking out the videos you mentioned and be commenting some more doubts I might have 😀. Thanks again

The untreated part isn’t as important as the surrounding noise. Do you have any noise from outside your recording space? Examples: laundry area, dehumidifier, people walking/talking, etc.

Short answer is, yes, get a dynamic microphone. That being said what kind of stuff are you making? You might need a condenser for the the stuff you are doing.

I just took a listen to your newest video, just to get an idea of your audio. I have a few questions to narrow the search. 1) Budget (This includes cost of Mic and interface if you don't have an interface) 2) What mic are you using now? 3) How treated is the room you are recording in? 4) Do you plan on changing styles of video? Meaning the way that you filmed, the newest one is that how you want to keep it? I ask because of the flexibility of the pickup of the mic will determine which one fits best. Also if you plan on having a face cam you will have to decide if you want the mic in frame as well. If you are keeping it the same then just let me know. 5) Sound style, What sound do you want? (Broadcast or brighter) Just get back to me after thinking about these questions and we can talk about it more. Thanks for checking out the video!

Could you please share a link to the pop filter you are using with the podmic?
@RebelTech1990
@RebelTech1990 3 года назад
Just added it to the description. It's at B&H. To be honest I'm not a big fan of it. It kinda works but it's not great. As far as reducing plosives it's fine but its just poorly made. Also for $40 it's way too much. I paid $20 when it was on sale, so maybe wait till then. If you are going to invest in a pop filter, any metal mesh one, like in the video is good. i have a bluebird sl cost about 260 and wandering is the pod mic better to me sounds better than the bluebird is it just i dont have it setup? i also have the rodecaster pro 2 and wandering how to get broadcaster sound from the bluebird
@RebelTech1990
@RebelTech1990 Год назад
It's tough to get a "broadcast sound" out of a mic that isn't a broadcast mic. You can add some low/lowmid to it and maybe dampen the highs but at the risk of losing a well rounded sound. Microphone can be flexible but it really comes down to using the right tool for the job. The podmic, doesn't have a traditional broadcast sound but it is closer than a condenser. so there is less work to be done on the back end. My suggestion is, if you have the cash get the podmic, or any other dynamic mic in that price range, and use that for the broadcast use. then keep the bluebird for other stuff you wanna make. You can also sell the bluebird and save some cash on the next mic. that's if you dont wanna use it. Thanks for checking out the video!
