VStrom for me all day - solid, reliable, comfortable, eats the miles effortlessly, a decent amount of useable and useful tech to support it. in tech terms for when i tour - cruise control, ability to plug shit in, a decent tank range, punchy engine and some panniers I'm in. i am paying less for a proven bike in my opinion, my opinion, and a lot less. imagine if you could throw some tech shite that the Honda has on it you would still be paying less. I think people want the touring bike without compromise to quality and paying a shed full of money to get it, and no i wouldn't buy a £20k GS...Ever

100% I agree mate. I gust buy I vstrom 1050xt and its amazing .has everything you need for 15k all the others brands are over 17k for xt's electronics. Also affordable service. When ducati is 1500k for big service... I need cornering abs cruise control not tft and electronics suspension...

Yep we arent swayed by a fancy screen . And why compare the vstrom to much more expensive bikes . An exhaust and a remap would benefit the suzuki if needed

As others have said, I remember middleweights being 550s, big bikes being 750s and super massive monsters being 1000! All these are too tall and heavy for my short, stumpy legs and I never go off road. If I did go off road, I'd want 500cc max. And if I was touring with pillion and luggage, I'd want a bike I could get both feet down on, pick off the floor easily and be able to manhandle about without the risk of a hernia!

Vstrom turd. Pretty hard on the Suzuki in this review. Hmmm!! I kinda like the simplicity of it. Not fancy by any stretch; but just an honest, reliable, inexpensive and reasonably tame workhorse. I have the older version and just think it’s the most impressive bike to live with down here in Kenya. It never breaks, never complains, handles shitty roads without stress, and it was bloody cheap.

The 2018 V-strom 1000's have a ton of torque down low, peter out after 6k rpm, are okay on road, but I'm out on OHRV trails and single tracking with guys on trail bikes with my V-Strom. Mud is the Achilles heel for these heavier bikes, but I have had to turn around more because someone else couldn't make it with the 701 or KLR or someones bike broke. Rider skill is a huge part of it. Snobbery is pretty pathetic, and, in the Adventure Bike world, shouldn't have a place. Whose bike has more horse power or is faster, or has heated seats/grips shouldn't be the focus. It should be the ride and glad you could come along.

D e x I’m also riding my 18 Vstrom where others say you can’t take them. My riding group has an older AT, DR350, GS310, and a few 250 Honda’s. We ride everywhere and anywhere! I do take some terrain a bit slower because the forks bottom easily. But I’ve never been unable to surmount the same obstacles as the others. Right now the RD07, the GS310, and a XL250 are all down for repairs. Some quite costly. The Suzuki doesn’t cost me anything except fuel.

Unfortunately they were spot on the V-strom. I've testridden it in the hope it will be my next bike after my Africa Twin. It lacked both low end and high end grunt, no noise or excitement with the stock exhaust neither, it was an awfull experience.
@D.E.X
@D.E.X 3 года назад
@@szaesz8190 Stay with the Africa Twin or go with a KTM1290. But DL1000 has 76footpounds torque at 4500rpm kinda kicks the crap out of your Africa Twin with 67 at 6000. The KTM Adventure has about 90 at 6500.BMW R1250GS Adventure is about same as the KTM. Loud is ... a personal preference that says more about the character of the rider than the abilities of the machine. An aftermarket exhaust to make the bike louder will significantly lower mileage and performance unless retuned. If you want to grunt around in really technical terrain, the KTM 790 Adventure R has the same torque curve as your Africa Twin at 100lb lighter and with the tank so low and stock at 5.3gal, with the 21" FT and 10" of clearance is a barrel of fun. I'm sure you can make it loud, too.

@@D.E.X It might be true for the 2018 Vstrom model mate, it definetly ain't for the 2020. It feels slow, sluggish, underpowered and only on paper beats the Africa. It's a shame really, cause I really digged the simplicity and the looks of the new V-strom. But riding head to head Vstrom after the Africa... nuh...

I don't think any of these come under the middleweight class. In my opinion any bike over 200kg wet is too heavy to be called middleweight. The Tenere 700 and the KTM 790 Adventure are nearly there at 205kg and 203kg wet respectively but, by the time your loaded up ready to go with all your luggage, even that is going to be heavy if your planning to take them off road. Well, in my case, anyway. On road only, the story would be different, but then you don't have to have any of the bikes in this review.

Enjoyed the heck out of this. Great open dialog between mates with a lot of bike experience. I would have slid the 790R towards High Spec with it's multi rider mode, available cruise, quick shift, etc, and a bit more towards off road, for this comparison group. Otherwise, I was right there with them. Disclaimer; I bought a used '18 ATAS. It was smoking good deal, that let me pay cash. Otherwise, I'd have bought the Rally Pro too.

Not sure what the other guys were using, but I've been using a GoPro H7 Black (the on-board of the Tiger, mostly). With updated firmware and on GoPro batteries (not 3rd party batteries) it's been great; I use a 256Gb card, sometimes power it via USB, and have recorded a complete lap of the NC500 in one go - over 9 hours' riding - in 1080p with no problems. The stabilising is amazing, and it seems to be pretty durable (decked it out while cornering, no problems). Versatile too - on bike, on helmet, tripod for talking to camera, on a selfie stick for wandering about. Love 'em.

Great stuff guys, like how you speak of all the positives and negatives. As a 2019 Vstrom XT rider I think Suzuki did too little to improve, it shoud have new frame to make it a bit lighter, engine has maybe made a step back and at least a TFT for 2020. I would not upgrade, but would love to see Kawasaki making a Vtwin 1000 cc with 19 inch tire. That would be my choice. Gretttings from Slovenia.

I compare my bike: 3 cylinder, super smooth sophisticated engine, with loads of torque and 75 bhp. Very little wind buffeting up to about 85 or 90 mph. More road oriented, but can do off road adventure riding with care. Sahara in Morocco and over the top of the Atlas mountains. Good optional luggage system. Informative instrument panel (Speed, RPM, Gear, Time, Trip Meter). Centre stand and side stand. Brembo brakes. Super comfortable seat. But most important of all, it cost me so little to buy it, I can afford the petrol to go places. The bike is of course a 1988 BMW K75 base model. I have fiited a couple of USB sockets and a sat nav mount. I have bought heated grips, that will be fitted before this winter. My go anywhere, anytime bike!

Africa Twin all day! Superior quality and reliability. Great looks. Superb engine. Wonderful sound. Outstanding DCT (no other company can equal that). Produced in Japan instead of Thailand. The base spec 2020 AT is the better bike compared to the Adventure Sports. Lighter, better handling, more dynamic, better offroad, better functioning wind protection if you order the larger screen. The Twin is the clear winner! If you buy a Honda, you will be also happy 15 years from now. And guys, what the heck are you talking about? The base spec AT easily matches the Tiger offroad.

Great video. There seems to be a massive difference in opinion as to what an adventure bike is. Everyone is trying to market these monster bikes to us as off road weapons. They are not even close to being off road oriented. They are street bikes with some off road abilities. I would not rate any of them as being more off road bike than on road. All of em should be above the 50/50 line for sure. Guess the problem is that if a 500lb plus bike, sold with street tires on it is a good choice for off road then we are all wishing for something very different. but cheers on the good video making.

@@writestuffmedia I totally agree, definitely not derogatory in my eyes (especially when not referring to quality). I find it more descriptive and beneficial, especially during the decision making process for the average budgeted rider. Great video guys, really enjoyed the whiteboard part as well - I felt like joining in on the conversation. Shame about the comments though, a bit annoyed at how fussy people get over trivial shit, particularly this idea that adventure bikes need to be light and off-road focussed to truly qualify for the category. As an Aussie, there’s some big adventures you can have on sealed roads and dirt roads. Sure, if you’re crossing the Simpson or doing Cape York there’s better options, but they usually fall into the trail bike category to begin with, and are then modified into lightweight ‘adventure bikes’. The adventure bike category has pretty much always been full of what are just big dual sport bikes, so I’m surprised people still struggle with the name of the category (and how they are then categorised in terms of size, etc). Now I’m whinging about whingers... oh well.
@writestuffmedia
@writestuffmedia 3 года назад
Thanks JB. Appreciate the comments. I wish we'd shot an ending on the beach for the first vid; then we could've made two shorter vids instead of having to wedge them together into one long one. But hey. We learn. I should've been more considerate with the naming of the category - people do get hung up on it a bit, but I kinda just realised it's because if I'd bought a 1000cc adventure bike, and they ain't cheap, then have some clown sit on a sand dune and mansplain why it's actually a middleweight, that might piss me off a bit. And fair enough. And I'm all for people disagreeing with the things we spout; it's all fair comment. I don't mind people picking me up on facts I get wrong either - we're all learning etc. I even get why people critique the content in terms of production; we try and do the best we can, it's free, sometimes we get it right & sometimes wrong but hey, we're not a ££££ broadcaster etc. But if the music's rubbish, it's rubbish. And if the sound is terrible, it's terrible - can't argue! I'm whinging about whinging about whingers 🤪

@@writestuffmedia Good stuff Simon. At the risk of sounding like a bit of an ass-kisser or FEC fanboy, I must say I think you're doing a great job with this RU-vid stuff (as are your colleagues, but you come across just a bit more dedicated to the whole thing I guess). I've invested a fair bit of time searching for good bike content and the handful of channels I subscribe to are all unique in their own way. For me, it feels like this channel has more of an old school 'magazine' vibe to it, which I like - so I hope you guys can maintain that in the future. I'm sure majority rules and a lot of people like shorter videos and more action than facts/opinion/conversation, but there's enough of that elsewhere. As long as the audio and visuals are clear as much as possible, I'm happy here. For example, I wouldn't want to see you splitting videos up just for the sake of it, unless there's a good reason. Long 'feature length' ones are good too, sometimes I just wait until I have enough time to watch it (it took me a week to get to this one). I guess I'm giving advice not to take too much advice from viewers... how ironic. Oh well, cheers mate.

Just one more perspective to this. The whole concept of "adventure" is within the driver, not any of these bikes. It's up to you, what kind of adventures you're going to have. All kinds of adventures are ok to be called adventure. There's often too much emphasis on "off road" capability, when adventure bikes are not about that. There's dirt bikes for that genre. All adventure bikes with proper tires can manage gravel roads, road to the beach, way to camping ground, next forest road or maybe to the next vineyard. Just imagine the adventures you are going to take and think which bike give you the best experience within your budget, preferences and which bike give you right vibe. Enjoy live and ride!

Fantastic video, good chat amongst the presenters. Although I’m surprised that you think the 790 Adv R model is closer in offroad ability to the Tiger Rally Pro than T7. This vid just goes to show this market is all down to personal opinion and choice, be it what you think ‘mid-size’ means or what works well for you and what doesn’t on an adventure bike. Love this video, and especially the chart at the end, really interesting, So I'll ask you guys, I'm 54, 6 foot 2 inches, I'd got my heart set on Ducati 1260s grand tour, after test riding, both BMWs, hated them, felt like tractors, Triumph 800 tiger, Yamaha tracer 900, looked and sat on Africa twin, not a big fan of how it feels to sit on,this was all pre lockdown, I will probably only ever do roads, a lot of mike's though, moving to Cornwall, and I'm doing Scotland first then see how we go from then, although I rode off road since I was 8 so might do a bit, or buy a smaller bike for off road. My question is, choice of the Ducati multistrada 950 or 1260 Triumph Tiger 900 which would you chose, based on rideability, comfort, mpg, and most importantly to me, reliability. Thanks
@writestuffmedia
@writestuffmedia 3 года назад
Last question first; reliability - MS is well-established model with no reliability issues I'm aware of - obviously in mass production there can be the odd problem here and there but nothing substantial I know of. Follow servicing to the letter & you should be ok. Triumph is the same - you hear of individual cases, but that's exactly what they are: individual. The 900 motor is a fairly heavily modded-800 with a lot of new parts - it would be highly, highly unusual for a problem to occur across production, but it *is* effectively a new motor. And I guess all manufacturers are constantly evolving (and economising) on production techniques & suppliers - tbh, I suspect that's where the majority of manufacturers' reliability issues stem from. Bottom line; I'd have no concerns with either. In terms of what might suit you best & from your use & preference, I would go for one of the Ducatis every time. Pure road bikes without having to compromise on weight balance, suspension travel, components & styling for that off-road look & feel. If there was even the slightest hint of off road, you'd have to choose a Tiger Rally Pro. But pure on road? If you like the Vtwin better than the triple, has to be the 950 or 1260. Between them - assuming you mean the latest top spec of both; they have (as I recall) similar (if not identical) chassis (I'd need to look it up to be sure - easy to do on Ducati's specs site). So really it's down to which engine you prefer; the 950 is revvier & busier, but a bit smoother and tbh a bit more flexible because it's happier trickling along in 30mph zones. The 1260 is bursting with performance all over, is astonishingly rapid, but its natural area of efficiency is at a higher pace than the 950 - I know which one I'd rather ride around town at 30mph in top (950), or which one I'd rather absolutely go bat-shit on down a fast A-road (1260). But either will happily do both. Personally, I like big engines and I cannot lie. :-) But I also like big tanks and the 1260 Enduro would feature in my personal choice.

I don't think the tech usually debuts on the sub 1100cc bikes unless that is the flagship model (as with Honda and Suzuki). For instance you'll see adaptive cruise control debut on the 1290 Super Adventure and 1250 GS before it makes it's way down the range. ADV bikes really are the SUVs of the motorcycle world though, in every way. Including the fact that they've become so popular that there's a bunch of sub categories. With some ADV bikes essentially being sports tourers on stilts with beaks, and others actually being made for off road performance.
@writestuffmedia
@writestuffmedia 3 года назад
Ok, um... so on tech: • Tiger 900 > 1200 • V85TT > V9 • T7 has no tech • MS 950 S got the same tech as the 1260 2 years after it was introduced • 790 Adv < 1290 SA • F850 GS < R1250 GS So you're right; I think I was kinda thinking primarily about the Tiger 900. They're all compromises between road v off-road to varying degrees - I remember at the launch of the 790 Adventure, KTM were banging on about the 'Ready To Race' thing... it was like being on a sportsbike launch in the early 00s, all "Own The Racetrack!" and performance orientated bumf. And I thought 'Hang on, that's all very well, but what about the guy or gal who wants to podge round Scotland in comfort?' Turns out the 790 Adventure is very, very good at podging round Scotland because I did exactly that, and apart from malfunctioning electronics I couldn't really fault it. At the discounted price they selling them for at the moment it's exceptional value.
