I recently fractured my finger and im 1 week out from starting to rehab it. Will use these tips, is there anything I need to be careful with trying these tips? As far as pain to expect or stuff I might struggle with? Its been a long time since I dealt with this.

@@VirtualHandCare ah, well, I couldn't afford an xray or docs visits, can't really afford a dedicated therapist or doctor. Thus far my timeline has been accurate, movement has returned and ive been able to use the basis of these exercises to return a near full range of motion. Though strength will not be there for a while and I hope to gain the full gambit back, or close to it. Ty for taking the time to answer me.

Idk if my experience is going to be like everyone else's. I broke my pinky when I fell on a Lyme scooter about a year ago. The doctors said my knuckle twisted a bit on impact so it was hard to set back into place. I had 2 pins in it for about a month and I watched this video after the pins were removed. To be honest I was hoping for a bit more mobility in my finger by now. I can bend it open and closed just fine, it doesn't feel very weird, but I'd say it's back to being maybe 90% of what it used to be. I think because of the twisting of my knuckle, the bones weren't back into the perfect spots they used to be, so when they eventually healed everything was shifted slightly out of place. It almost feels like there's a force field stopping my finger from opening and closing all the way. If I push it with the opposite hand I can move it wherever and it doesn't hurt at all, but trying to make it move in certain directions just by willing it to move doesn't really work. It almost feels like there's a force field pushing so it doesn't fully extend or close. The video has a lot of good advice, though ! But my finger broke weird so I could only do so much when I was healing. The stiffness is gone for sure, but my mobility took a hit. Hope this helps someone out there ☺️

Dear Michelle. This is an awesome video. I had proper hand trauma (coupled with two broken wrists) and wires in my little finger. I am 10 weeks since the accident and 4 weeks from the casts coming off. The little finger was 30 mm off the palm and I have been following the advice here. I got it to touch the palm today for the first time (for only a second). But that's 30mm over 3 weeks. It's still 5mm off the palm if I'm not aggressive but that's the difference between the little finger sticking out so that it gets caught again (and broken again) or not. At this pace it will take 2 to 3 more weeks before I can make a fist again. I would add that after aggressive stretching my finger and hand swells up and there is some water retention in the hand. I find that a combination of massage and taking every second day off helps. A very good (perfume free) moisturiser before any exercise and before you go to bed is very useful (especially since I have alot of scar tissue). With any type of exercise I find that exercising every second day (hard) is better than doing average every day. Also sleeping with the hand under me (to stretch out) or hand tucked into my armpit (to compress in) while asleep helps. I am also moving to using a small compression ball to power up the muscles of the small finger only. I would also like to point out that this is a very slow process so dont be disappointed. If you get 1mm extra over 2 days that's ok. Just see this as 10mm over 20 days. 10mm extra movement in a hand is a huge difference. I would like to say that this is the best video I found, so thank you very much for all the help. It works.

This is a great video, thanks!! I just recently completed 6 weeks in a splint for a mallet finger, and when I went to my ortho for the splint removal he just said "move and use it during the day, and splint at night". I asked if there were certain exercises or methods, and he said just use it. Ignorantly I went straight to making a fist and it seemed more painful than it should. Then I found your video, and it helped a lot. I think I would have re injured it if I kept going the way I was. Thanks so much for the video!!

@@dnangel4277 Thanks for asking. It has been an year. I would say I stopped monitoring closely and stopped any exercises about 2 months after this comment. At the time, there still was some residual stiffness. Functionally, the most important action which gave me trouble was squeezing lemons/limes. Otherwise general stiffness was all I felt. I'd say I was at 85%. Since then, it has improved, over time, so that squeezing limes is just fine. I would say my finger is at 95% and doesn't look like it is gonna get better.

Great video! I’m recovering from a dislocated finger, an injury I suffered over 5 months ago. The finger was buddy taped, perhaps too tightly and I have two injured fingers. I’ve been doing most of the exercises you’ve shown here, but will start to incorporate those longer, lighter stretches with the band. I have been giving the fingers a rest for a couple of days after exercises. Would you suggest perhaps lowering the intensity and doing this every day instead? Also, the fingers are quite bent. While flexion has improved, extension has worsened. Recently, I’ve been splinting every couple of days for about 20 minutes. They straightens out a bit, but overnight go right back where they were, and flexion is more compromised for a day or so after splinting. Please, let me know if you have anything more specific for extension. I imagine that if the swelling finally goes down, this will improve, but concerned as it’s the middle and ring fingers on my dominant hand.

Hi Michelle. I'm recovering from a mallet finger injury in my pinky, there was no bone damage. I wore a stack splint full time for almost nine weeks and am now trying to regain mobility in that finger. It seems healed, it is perfectly straight and I can straighten it after bending it but I can only bend it a tiny bit due to the extreme stiffness. I was wondering how much pain is acceptable, when you say to bend all the way down? I'm not going quite all the way down but I'm doing the best I can and I am in a moderate amount of pain. I also feel some creaking in the joint if that makes sense. Though I'm fairly certain it's healed since it snaps back to a straight resting position with no trouble. I guess my question is, should I stretch through the pain for a fuller bend in the joint or just do smaller stretches daily until I'm gradually able to work my way up to a deeper bend? I'll keep working on the exercises, appreciate the video. Thank you. edit: Just an update for anyone who's curious, I've been stretching through the pain and it's getting better, it's still a bit stiff and sore but I'm seeing a huge improvement. I could not bend it as far as she was saying to in the video so I just did the best I could at first (WITHOUT forcing it past the point where it felt like it would snap in half) and now I can bend it all the way with only a small amount of pain and stiffness whereas before it would only barely wiggle. I imagine if I keep going it will be doing just fine in a couple more weeks. Thanks for the video! Very very helpful.

Thanks for the exercises! Really helping :) Quick question: I dislocated my ring finger at jiu jitsu quite badly about five weeks ago. I can feel these exercises helping me get closer to being able to make a fist again (thank you!) but I'm not seeing any improvement in terms of being able to straighten the finger fully. Which exercise might one focus on for straightening?

Try this video! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IH6WJX5FGMs.html. Sometimes 'dislocated' fingers have more going on such as a ligament tear. If has been 5 weeks and it has not improved I highly recommend to see a Hand surgeon.

Hi Michelle, It’s been 9 weeks that I broke my wrist and 3 weeks that my cast is off. I am watching your wrist exercises videos and doing my exercises with you. Your videos and instructions are excellent. I am an older person (71) so my process might be a little bit slower. How long approximately takes to fully recover fractured wrist? Thank you for your videos💜💜

You are welcome! Wrist fracture recovery can take several months to a full year depending on age, severity, length of immobilization, etc. Lots of factors but hang in there! Sending lots of strength your way! 💜

Thank you, I started the process of 2 stage flexor reconstruction on my middle finger. The surgeon said to keep working passive motion, and I’ve been trying to find ways to get my finger to fully close in. I’m uncertain if it’s the silicon rod or just the surgery in general that is making it so stiff. These tips are very helpful, I’m totally ordering that buddy tape!

A 2 stage reconstruction is a big undertaking and a long process! Sounds like you are on the right track with keeping your finger as supple as possible at this point. Definitely continue following your surgeon and hand therapist's recommendations. Good luck to you!

I love everything about this video and have watched it several times as well as several other videos on this channel. My hand surgeon thought to operate on my dominant hand pinky's Boutonniere deformity after I asked for and got an MRI taken about 11 weeks after the injury (the finger was not responding to conservative treatment) but changed his mind about operating after I got a 2nd opinion from his colleague. Maybe my age came into their decision (I'll be 80 in 6 months), but they wouldn't say. The injury occurred 9 1/2 months ago now. Straight splinting 24/7 for 6 weeks was prescribed instead of the surgery (previously they just had me straight splinting at night) and after removing the 6-weeks-long-worn straight splint I tried using methods similar to those in this video to regain ROM. I could see progress but stiffness returns. It seems if I try too hard the PIP joint responds with soreness, so I lighten up and then the ROM decreases. I figure maybe a balance will be effective: Keep trying but not too hard. I can regain the ability to make something like a useful fist in a minute of stretching, but then it goes away pretty quickly and find I can't get the pinky to bend like the other fingers. Of course, I only need to grab something with the whole hand occasionally, so the ROM goes away naturally. I wasn't told to do so, (in fact the 2nd opinion doctor seemed to not like the idea) but I sometimes continue to wear the splint I wore for 6 straight weeks. But I figure I should (and have continued to) occasionally wear that splint as a night splint because it encourages the finger to straighten if I wear it for a while, e.g. overnight. I wish I could understand the radiologist's report on the MRI, I am unable to understand its technical language. I figure it's possible the finger will regain most if not all of its ROM in time or maybe it's actually impossible due to the nature of the injury. My PT, last time I saw her said she wanted me to send her a photo of the hand making a perfect fist in 3 weeks. I could not and did not send her that photo and have not communicated with her since. I don't have confidence in any of the hand people at my HMO, unfortunately. But Virtual Hand Care videos are very encouraging. I guess I should just keep watching them and using the techniques shown and hope for real progress. The finger was very sore and swollen for months following the injury. Much less so 5 months after the injury, when I got the 6-weeks-worn 24/7 splint off, but trying to develop sufficient and pain free ROM has been frustrating. Perhaps the scar tissue will soften over time and things will improve. The hand surgeon who was against surgery thought 9 months would be enough for recovery and that the scar tissue would have loosened, but it hasn't turned out like that.
