What do you think the best 8- and 16-bit arcade ports are? Let me know! Some more I should mention on my list: Bionic Commando, Super Off Road, Baseball Stars.
Dude!, "Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior" on SNES was supposed to be impossible on a 16 meg cartridge! and Turbo was a masterpiece! I think every other version is a derivative of the SNES version, I might be mistaken.
That’s actually quite under rated when talking about ports. Although I don’t like altered beats, the Mega Drive version is visually very close. Where it removed the little scaling effects it added extra parallel scrolling to the background the arcade didn’t have.
TMNT IV has to be one of the most triumphant examples, given that when the Re-Shelled remake came out, people specifically complained that it didn't have elements from the SNES version in it. The original Genesis port of Golden Axe is also a notable accomplishment, even if it got surpassed by later beat 'em ups on the system.
Golden Axe on Sega Genesis. It's very accurate and true to the arcade original (same levels, same enemies & characters, etc), but you also get a Genesis exclusive level and Genesis exclusive boss (The Death Bringer) at the end. And you also get the Genesis exclusive one-on-one fighting mode. To me that's the perfect port: it gives you the arcade original content (It doesn't mess with it) but also give you brand new content added in to the original arcade original content. Great stuff.
In my opinion, Bionic Commando, P.O.W., Guerilla Wars, Spike V'Ball, Tecmo Ball, Gun.Smoke, Rygar, Contra and Ninja Gaiden were the best NES ports since they are essentially better than their Arcade counterpart and pretty much the sequels of most of these took more inspiration from the NES versions over the Arcade versions.
@@nerfytheclown Oh, most definitely. It really only had 1 issue and that was the name/life bars were separate instead of the name being over the health. A different font was used for the names, too and it always looked a bit generic. Look it up if you re unsure what Im talking about. The arcades font (and the 32x as well) looks almost "sharp" and pointy and fits with the overall theme of the game.
yes because hearing a loud, annoying gong every time you win or lose, something that wasn't even in the original arcade version, is a "great 16 bit conversion of the arcade game" Give me the choppy Genesis version over the SNES any day. That gong ruins it.
A couple of Tengen games: Toobin for the NES, might not look as great as the arcade, but the controls are a huge improvement. And Paperboy for the Master System comes really close to arcade perfect.
Gradius II on Famicom, while not superior to the arcade, was a really, really good port considering it was on an 8-bit system. I'll also add that NES Galaga and Arkanoid are good versions as well.
As someone that had the PC engine street fighter 2 game at the time. It was amazing to play a game of such quality as a handheld. Even with two buttons it was surprisingly playable. I had the PC engine GT. It’s very impressive how good it is considering the software. Not just the graphics, but the gameplay and everything. Saying that in the scheme of things it plays the same as the SNES and the Mega Drive version. It just has a bunch of subtle differences in graphics like missing parallax background, and the pack boxes next to the ✌️ signs. I downloaded the roms to compare.
Snow Brothers. I remember playing it at a friends house for the first time and was completely surprised the NES had a port of it. I loved the arcade version but even with the NES limitations they made a very true to the arcade port in terms of graphics, music, sound effects, and the over all feel and fun… just like the arcade, I LOVE SNOW BROTHERS!
The usual: SNES Turtles in Time, Final Fight CD, SNES MK 2...SF 2...and the NES ports of contra/super C > arcade versions...so personal faves: UN Squad, Truxton, Twin Eagle
What do you think about the Hang On port for Genesis? I really loved the arcade because of the control like a real bike, but the Genesis port used a regular controller, and even if it could be a good game, the sensation is totally different
Guerilla War should've been on this list. Still one of the best co-op games on the NES. Sure it was censored from it's arcade counterpart, Guevara. But still great game nonetheless.
First pops in mind: the port of (Data East) Midnight Resistance on the Genesis/ Megadrive Also: -Rainbow Islands on the Turbografx cd... -N.a.r.c. on the NES was amazing for the system, as well as Cabal (that one being a port of the c64 port of the arcade)
I remember playing Contra arcade via MAME a long long time ago and thought it would be cool if the NES version got the _Super Mario All-Stars_ treatment hand remade with the arcade sprites/graphics
You may be familiar with this but just in case you arent... The first Zelda got a similar "All Stars" 16-bit upgrade as well with the Super Nintendo's Satellaview (think of it like the Genesis' Sega Channel, but instead of cable it was thru a satellite) and the game BS Legend OF Zelda. With the BS meaning Broadcast Satellite, not "Bravo Sierra" as Pat would say. Good 'ol Roo from the Clan Of The Grey Wolf --- AKA 16 Bit Gems --- did a review about the Satellaview in general and the Zelda games on there. There is also a different version of Link To The Past called BS The Legend of Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets where you go around and interact with these stone tablets. You had to play it at a certain time when the satellite was in range and a radio drama would be broadcast along side with the game, and youd hear things happening in the overworld and you could go find them - for example: an old man is drowning in the water and you hear him yelling for help on the radio broadcast. Then you could go and try to find him and he would give you something to help. Definitely check out Roo's retrospective on all of it - the game, the add-on itself and service. The video's called " 16-Bit Gems - #20: BS Zelda (& Satellaview Retrospective) ". I miss 16-Bit Gems and, one of Retrowares best, right up there with Pat, Gaming Historian, Derek from SSFF (formally The Happy Video Game Nerd) and those chodes The Game Chasers. Definitely check out his History and Review of Earthbound and this Dragon Quest/Rise Of The JRPG videos.
Heres the link, dont know if its gonna get nuked or not as theres a whorebot here in the comments spamming everyone with her "goods". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BDVxSm-_iM4.html
@@zackschilling4376 I heard of the Satellaview version of Zelda, I also remember a 16-bit version of _Dragon Quest_ (Dragon Warrior) 1 and maybe 2 that we westerners never got
I really loved the NES port of the original TMNT game (So TMNT 2 on the NES ==> the original TMNT arcade game) There is no doubt the engine on the arcade version is better, the hardware more powerful... larger sprites... but the NES version works really really well. I have often said, to as many people as I think will listen, that I'd love to see the NES version running on the arcade versions engine / hardware. I love the addition of the snow level, and feel overall the NES level design and game play is better. I'd just like to see it running on the arcade hardware / engine. That would be something.
Speaking of Sonic, only arcade I've seen was Sonic the Fighters which was a 3d fighting game featuring Sonic the hedgehog characters. But I manage to snag the came after it came out on Sonic Gems Collection for GameCube. Also if you go to arcades you will find some Sonic and Mario Olympics games too.

didn't even know there was a final fight cd I'm gonna have to try to find that and play it if possible cause I love that franchise especially the first game
There is Segasonic the Hedgehog for the arcades. But that arcade game was weird because it used a trackball for movement. Or and also Sonic, the Fighters. But we don’t talk about that one.
Teenage Mutant ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time on SNES is a great port of the arcade game with some improvements over the original. Mortal Kombat 2 on SNES is a near flawless port.
Shinobi on the Master System is by far the best port on any 8bit console, The port of Bubble Bobble on the master system also "blows" the NES version out of the water
Ghost 'n' Goblins port to the Genesis was great. Strider for the Genesis was a great port. Kung-fu Master on the NES was another great port. 2 games that were better console games than the arcade games were Punch-Out NES and Ninja Gaiden on NES. Even though these games were alter for the home console.

THE Best Street Fighter II port is I believe on Sharp X68000 (I know, it's home computer but...) ...other great ports (some even better than arcade): Atomic Runner (Sega Genesis) Insector-X (Sega Genesis) Truxton (Sega Genesis) Ghouls'n'Ghosts (Sega Genesis) Strider (Sega Genesis) NBA JAM (Sega Genesis) Fatal Fury Special (Sega CD) Strike Gunner (Super Nintendo) U.N. Squadron (Super Nintendo) Gauntlet (NES) Gradius (NES) Star Force (NES) Spy Hunter (NES) Jackal (NES)
Obviously all of the NeoGeo games were arcade perfect but I guess counting that it cheating lol. I know the Mega Drive actually had a lot of ports of arcade games, many of which were very good, such as Golden Axe, After Burner II, Truxton and Space Harrier.
captain america and the avengers for genesis midnight resistance for genesis joe and mac for genesis takes a dump all over the snes port ghouls and ghosts genesis double dragon 2 nes super high impact football snes strider genesis pac land tg 16
@@xboyindahouse no it was first on the MSX computer as "Vampire Killer!" Though I guess you could argue the Famicom disk version was first (by a few days), but that was mostly for marketing reasons I think.
@@KeithPhillips the very first Castlevania game Akumajō Dracula came out for Famicom Disk System in September of 1986 then a month later Vampire Killer came out for the MSX
1:34 There are only a few TG-16 games that have impressive graphics & sound. Yet, somehow, they produce a nearly perfect copy of Street Fighter on an 8 bit processor. Talk about lazy developers.
