How do you earn an inmate’s respect and compliance?
Great question. Anthony Gangi, Host of Tier Talk, discusses his approach on how to earn the respect and compliance of inmates. Listen in as he discusses the do’s and don’t of professionalism. Remember, it’s all about how we carry ourselves.

I agree with what you are saying Gangi. I have been able to build the reputation as being Firm and by the book, but can and will adapt to minor issues like you talked about. Inmates have told me that when I work they know what to expect and actually like that structure. They hate officers that are strict one day and lenient the next. I also take the time to study their inmate manual so I know what they are entitled to as well as being able to advice them on what they are doing wrong when they do it. I go by the philosophy of “Inmates will be given everything they are entitled to receive. No more, no less.” I also use the “5 tactical steps of verbal judo” this actually helps a lot

Anthony, I never fail to learn something from your podcasts. As a United States Army Officer now in the Retired Reserve, I have a combined total of 30 years Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard Service. But inmates are not Troops and while it is similar in some ways, it is very different in other ways. If I ever return to Corrections as a Mental Health Therapist(probably part time), I will definitely keep in mind a lot of the things you talk about. Very good discussion!

My name is Tim Amdahl I retired from the Illinois Department of Corrections and wrote the book Broken Silence Badge 2717, which covered my entire career. I earned respect by giving it to those I watched over. I wanted them to know I was always professional, Firm Fair and Consistent. I agree with you Gangi. While they may not like your decisions They will respect you, if they know you are consistent. I think management sometimes created problems by not being consistent as they play politics with both officers and inmates. But FIRM FAIR and CONSITENT are the 3 big ones to have.

Thank you for doing these. Going into the prisons for the first time was eye opening. I now get why so many excons are so damaged and why their childhood decisions matter so much.

I agree Mr. Gangi! I cover this very early in our Field Training Program. The inmates will normally show you respect when you look professional, carry yourself with confidence, and follow the 3 golden rules... be Firm, Fair, & Consistent! I'll go a little further by saying of the 3 golden rules, "Consistency" is key. One other thing, you also have to be yourself, granted a tougher version of yourself. This is the only way to be consistent. Keep up the great work!

Before I do "granted a tougher version of yourself" I would build rapport with inmates, very important.

I try to handle things on the unit. If I can fix an issue directly with the inmate it can actually be better for them. If I have to repeat myself I give them the extra warning of the write-up. I have my whole spiel, but basically we fix it now or I write it, If I write you, you know Parole gets to see it. They would rather as little paper going to parole as possible. Remind them they don't want their parole denied. I get a fairly good level of compliance. On our end the bosses see we are running a decent block and keeping control without needing their hand in it.

I think being yourself is important. Especially if you are dealing with the “max A” type “hardened” inmates. Don’t front on who you are as a person because they will see through your soul. Being tough is fine if you are tough in real life, but if you aren’t you are wasting your time pretending. The real you will be exposed one way or another in prison.
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 5 лет назад
You are so right. Inmates will have a way of bringing the real you out.

Mr Gangi, I have watched TONS of your videos during my hiring process, I appreciate them and I'm learning alot. My question to you or any of your followers, I appreciate all the insight, is this. What's your thoughts on a older adult, im 52, just coming into corrections. Thanks for the input. Have a great day, stay safe everyone
@aletabeegle5183
@aletabeegle5183 4 года назад
Will inmates respect you more than a young adult, let's say 20-21. I feel like it'll be harder to manipulate a older person. I may be wrong. Thanks for the input.
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 4 года назад
For me, it really depends on the individual. Respect is earned and that can come at age 18 or 65. Grant it, life experience is a great tool against manipulation, but it goes beyond that. It really helps to know who you are and what the professions expects from you. I think if you keep reading up and gaining knowledge ...you will be well informed. That is the best way to protect yourself and earn that respect. Keep doing what you are doing

Inmates are inmates but like you said FARE FIRM AND CONSISTENT is always the best and management needs to know to keep steady officers on their post but when theirs a none steady or a officer they don’t know inmate will always test boundaries but I always say from the beginning of a shift explain and state what you want just don’t come on to a post and sit their and expect that inmates will behave. A lot of officer complain how horrible a post is when their placed somewhere unknown or a high class area and they assume inmates will follow when officer react. You have to always be proactive and command your post where ever. Also know how to address different inmates because not every inmate will understand one basic directions. Basically Corrections one on onez IPC skills needs to be practiced.
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 6 лет назад
This is excellent advice. I believe IPC skills is a must. If you can’t communicate you will get yourself and others hurt. Our job is ninety nine percent communication

Gangi- I am starting as a new county Corrections Deputy in just over a week. I have been trying to learn and soak up as much information as possible. I have been binge watching your channel. I love the content you have. It makes me think about a lot of things that I would probably only learn through experience, but you are filling my head with this wisdom before I step inside the wall. Keep it up. I really like the mental and psychological stuff you discuss. Do you have any tips for physical aspects of the job? Where should I continue to focus in terms of physical fitness and nutrition on the job and for the job? Thanks and stay safe!
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 6 лет назад
Kevin Smith of course. First off...is all about your mind first. Keeping you mind ready and able. When you get a chance, run through scenarios in your head. We work in a routine profession, so avoid complacency at all cost. You are actually doing great by learning as much as you can. And obviously that learning will continue as your career progresses. Our ability to adapt and adjust is foremost above all else. As for health and nutrition, I have someone I can get onto to the show to discuss what are some good routines and regimens to follow. I rather have advice like that come from a professional. But I must say, you are already on the right track. Your willingness to learn leads to improvement. Keep that up...I commend that. Also, congratulations on being part of the family. It’s is a great profession. Stay safe and keep you head on a swivel. If you ever need anything...my email is gangianthony@yahoo.com. If I don’t have the answer... I will do my hardest to get it for you.

Someone told me to tell you this. Concentrate on the cardio. You do not want to show up to an alarm winded. Bring your own lunch, avoid ordering out ( if your dept allows it, mine does ), it becomes easier to eat unhealthy when you’re staring at a pizza menu.

Eat Morninga and Hemp seeds ( google or uTube would tell you how good they are for mind and soul), then always have something in freezer in case no time to prepare your own homemade food(Items like cheeseburger, meatball, ..for $1, if you get them from vending machine they will cost $3)

So inmates respect guards who are firm and just their to do their job, but what about guards that get stabbed, what gets correction officers stabbed by other inmates?

Great video. It's a little more difficult dealing with lvl 4 and 5 Offenders isn't it?
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 6 лет назад
Money Made it depends on why they are classified into that level. If they are classified because of the amount of time they have and not because of their institutional behavior, you may find yourself around inmates who have accepted their situation and are not looking for any issues.
