Anthony, Very nice to hear the voice of experience in dealing with situations that could get out of hand. Using a planned strategy sounds a great deal safer and more effective than simply reacting on impulse. Listening to your podcasts makes me wish I was back in Corrections - and I was not a Corrections Officer, but rather a Mental Health Therapist. Anyway, I totally agree with outsmarting instead of outfighting the inmates !
I like that idea of holding an inmate accountable for your “time” & taking back your time on the “backend”. He’ll remember that & hopefully that will adjust future behavior.
There are going to be other inmates who will be watching from their cell later and will know you are talking to the disrespectful inmate. They may not know the dialogue, but they'll see the change of behavior afterwards and put 2 and 2 together. The officer gains their strength and respect through the change in behavior as a result
Your book has been ALL GOOD bro! I’ve been following your channel for months now. I appreciate your content. I’m new in this field and have struggling to find what works. My jail schooling did not prepare me and my colleagues for what we have been faced with in the facility itself. My FTOs are never there for help, Sergeants and captains who are over excessive and catering to inmates. I’m having a hard time because it’s so many responsibilities in the am, 4 shake downs as soon as I get on post, safety and chemical logs, learning oms systems, getting inmates to lock down after feeding them, medical , maintenance and commissary come on post without notice which causes tension because inmates refuse to lockdown. Most of all running a dam dry pod where inmates play bathroom games.
Wow. I appreciate your service Jamar. It’s sad when we have people destroying how this great profession can be seen. They need FTO’s who want to train. They need FTO who want the job. They need encourage and not destroy. Management is always a concern when they cater to much. It entitles the inmates and disenfranchises staff. I hope things turn around jomar
Thanks appreciate it brother! By the grace of God I’m holding on! Your exactly right though and it’s discouraging not having the support and teaching ourselves! Be safe brother!
Anthony, thanks so much for your encouragement!!! I aced the polygraph, oral board, PAT, background investigation, etc. Just have the CJBAT left here in FL to do. I believe I'll ace that too. After that, off to the Academy. I really appreciate your informative videos. Thanks again!!!! Can you do a video on experiences with your FTO. What they look for, etc.
First off stay professional, it’s hard but worth it. Understand we are going to win in the but do whatever it takes to get there. Consider removing yourself from the process if you think you have poisoned the well too much. Lastly when it’s go time, go 100 percent and don’t let up till the inmate has been secured in a new cell, holding area, shower etc. It ain’t over just because the cuffs go on. Stay vigilant and ready.
Be aware of your time element in dealing with a problematic inmate. Sometimes you can isolate, contain, then deescalate or do a planned use of force, great. Sometimes it’s just instantly on and you have no choice. Sometimes it’s just a quickly devolving situation and you have to ask, make tell. You do have to try and take the personal element out of it but if you do not act decisively you will keep on being tested and messed with. So don’t paint yourself into that corner . Don’t paint the inmate into a corner either. Let him have a way to save face. Basically make the smart move, whatever that is. Sometimes I have had to talk guys down and other times it’s been a surprise takedown. This is where knowledge, experience, ability and equipment and resources all need to come to bear.
Also, and be careful of this but keep in mind the way you handle this can make your next problem easier to deal with or harder. Should that be on your mind when handling something, maybe... sometimes you are not winning one fight but all future fights or you are asking for a bunch of future fights and problems. So sometimes tactics are strategies...
That's how it is when I enter the walk. The inmates call me blood hound. Where I work we can turn the shower off off the walk. It is just the shower of course so if they aren't out in 10 - 15 min. We give them one warning. If they don't listen we turn the shower off. That typically make them go back to their cell.
I just give them a dead stare, smile and tell them to step to the side, tell their guys to keep it moving. Most of the time their demeanor does a 180 once their people are out of earshot. For the ones that get increasingly disrespectful out aggressive i still pull them away, have them post on the wall, get my coverage officer and search the inmate. If they want to get more aggressive we handle the situation and cut their program the rest of the day for being disrespectful. Most of the time my next interaction with that group they all are more respectful.
