I started my teacher training in 2010 when I was 18. Back then, I didn't think about my age much, but on reflection it was quite a young age to start learning about becoming a Primary School Teacher. In this video, I reflect on my journey and the path I have taken since I applied for teaching 10 years ago! I hope to inspire anyone who is considering becoming a Primary School Teacher with this video and with the ForTeachers channel.

Great video! So interesting to hear about your teaching journey :) I'm applying to start a primary PGCE in September. I'm 25 and have occasionally worried about being too young, but having spent time observing young teachers in my job as an LSA, I've realised that it really doesn't matter - everyone has to start somewhere, and the confidence will come with experience, no matter what age you begin at

I’ve subscribed to your channel a week ago as I was scrolling through RU-vid trying to find a video about primary teaching and came across yours🙂 I just want to say thank you for addressing your audience about the ins and outs of becoming a teacher❤️ since I was quiet young I always played teachers and soon after that I struggled growing up knowing what career to get into✨ I’m in sixth form now and I’m thinking of studying ba hons of primary education teaching at uni but sometimes often doubt myself of becoming a teacher as I still feel quite young and not sure about the wages and feel like like primary teachers are under rated and all sorts... but after watching your videos it really motivates me to follow my dreams and go with my gut feelings xxx

Thank you so much for this video! I started a teacher training degree back when I was 18 but found the whole university experience very overwhelming and due to confidence issues I ended up leaving after 3 months. I’ve done various other jobs since and now at 26 it’s something I’d love to go back into but worry because it didn’t work out the first time!

This video couldn't have come at a more perfect time for me! I'm in my final year of uni and have just applied to do my Secondary PGCE. And my biggest fear is that I'm too young, especially given that I'm only 3 years older than some of the students I'll be teaching! You've put some of my worries aside, so thank you so much for that!

I think the students don’t really care what age you are as long as you provide a good learning environment for them. I used to worry so much but really I don’t think they would know my age back then was any different to now. Good luck with the PGCE. It’ll be a jam packed year but so worth it to get your qualification :) Let me know if I can help with anything!

@@lorihyslop4645 Hi Lori, I'm almost 21 which is the age you finish university at! Given I went straight into university from sixth form and then am going straight into my training year it explains how I'm quite young. So when I'm going into my training year, I'll be teaching A-Level students some of which will be 18. :)

It’s so hard isn’t it. It’s all about balance though. I’m worried this video makes me sound like I never went out but I really did! Just had to be careful and hold back during a placement. Plus now I’m qualified I have an entire summer to party and relax ;) hope you enjoy your teaching journey too!!

Really interesting video! I am 18 and have been working as a full-time TA (after-school club too!) since September 2019. I feel like I am missing out on the gap year life because I always have to be up early or say no to party plans. But I love the job so much and it has only served to solidify my career goals to become a primary school teacher. I do find it really difficult with other staff members though as they always make sly jokes about my age which actually just serve to undermine me and my authority (although the children generally do respect me). It’s tough working in schools so young so hats off to you for being a full blown teacher at 21! ♥️

Appreciate you taking the time to comment. I can relate to your journey too! Everyone can decide what order they want to do things. I personally much prefer having adventures now that I’m older and have a secure job/ wage. But each to their own of course! I really hope you manage to get your qualification if that’s where you want to head. Hopefully everyone will be respectful along the way too :) Let me know if you have any questions along the way!

@@emmalouise2362 Hiya! Yes so this probably won't help at all but I was working at the school in after school club for a couple months and then they had an opening for a TA job and they literally just said they like me so much that they offered me the job on the spot! I didn't have any other experience working in other primary schools and you don't really need much for a general TA job so I would recommend just going to your local schools and asking if they have any part-time positions available. Or doing similar to what I did and work in after school club or breakfast club as they tend to look to hire internally if there is a position open. You could also volunteer like 1 or 2 days a week in early years or something and tell them that if they have any jobs available in the future that you would be open to that. Sorry I couldn't be of more help - hope you find something soon

I’ve been working in schools since I was 19. I’m now 39 and doing my teacher training. For me, I’m glad I’m doing it now because I have more life experience, at 18 I wasn’t ready, at 25, when I finished my degree, I wasn’t ready. Yes it’s hard, I have two children of primary age as well so a lot to juggle but I know it’s the right time for me.

Hello! I've studied by bachelor in Biology and doing my masters at the moment but I really would like to be a secondary teacher in Biology. I was thinking on applying to my Secondary PGCE. I would like to keep studying while I'm working as a teacher. Is it easy to find a part-time job as a secondary teacher? I would like to do my PhD part time at the same time, but It might be too complicated. Thanks for the video!!

Interesting video topic. I’m 21 and I have just qualified as a Primary Teacher. I have taught many children who have tried to guess my age, the most recent guess was 55! I think that says more about me than them! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Congrats on 11,000 subs too!

I can relate! On my first placement I had ombre hair with a silvery blonde colour. One of the children thought I was going grey and asked if I was a Grandma... I was 19 😂🤦‍♀️

I feel like they never know anyway! I’ve never found the children to be the issue .. more myself wondering if I was ‘mature’ enough for the job. Happy to say I found my confidence after a couple of years. Where will you start your NQT year? Congrats by the way! I hope you enjoy having a class of your own! X

I live in the UK and I'm currently 33, previously haven't thought much about teaching to be honest however recently I have really been getting interested in training to become a teacher. I don't yet have a degree or anything though so how long would it take to get the all the qualifications I would need to become a teacher? Or is it too late realistically to change career now as I also have a family to support and so can't really afford to quit my current job to go into full time study for years?

Hi. Thanks for th video. I had a quick question. I'm about to finish the sam course as you but a different uni. I wondered if you had to top up your qts to pgce? My uni continually tell us with qts i can only teach in england and need pgce to teach abroad. Thanks

I think most places abroad require a PGCE or equivalent. My course was ‘enough’ though, as the QTS included the same or an equivalent qualification. What is your course title? Where are you hoping to teach? I will help as best I can!

I went into secondary teacher training as I became a teaching assistant after university, and thought it might be the best step, having left university with a languages degree. I qualified in 2012 and now am taking a career break, as you said, no one can take the qualifications away from you. Since qualifying, it was a personal and professional battle for me to complete my NQT year (I had to change schools to pass and was signed off with stress in both, weirdly) and I’ve “bumbled” my way through several schools in the process, and to be fair, in retrospect, I’m probably more of a KS1 or EYFS teacher than a secondary teacher. I’ve more patience for them, and found it much more motivating to help a child to read and start to learn maths. Will I go back to teaching? Probably in the future, but not right now.

Thank you for sharing your story. Thank you also for being fair to yourself and for reflecting so positively. I know your comment will help others in a similar position! It’s such a tough job and the training really makes or breaks you. I hope you find balance during the next stage of your career, whether you return to the classroom or head somewhere else 🥰
