24 frames is a reference to 1 second. How fast things change. Like a pipebomb ready to blow. 1 second later its all destroyed but god let it happen , it goes up in flames. Instead of god building your life around good moments, he builds your life by blowing things up and letting you build them back and be the architect of your own life. “You’ll forget their names, “1 second later”, (in 24 frames)

Great discussion gents. Isbell is one of my favorites even though I disagree with him politically and some of his lyrics. On another note, I’ve said for years that REM was Americana before Americana existed.

I’ll admit that chorus takes some nuts to sing in country music. The way I’ve always seen it is if your pray for strength, he’s gonna give you a weight to carry cuz how else do you build strength? You pray for mercy in the world, he’s gonna give you someone to forgive. That’s the only I could ever make sense of it all. To me, the damning line in that chorus isn’t the architect or bomb part, it’s the now you know line. Claiming that you know anything involving God is a risky venture. Isbell drives me nuts. I want to like his music. The music has always been great but his lyrics and somethings he says in public gets under my skin. I have tons of respect though cuz he’s an obviously talented and well thought out artist.

(Let me preface by saying that I am not religious, and we probably wouldn't agree on politics or social issues, but I really enjoyed your post and wanted to respond to it.) I've always interpreted the chorus to mean that life is unpredictable, crazy things sometimes happen suddenly and we have no control, and whenever something is beyond our control, it is because God willed it to be. So those disruptions hit our lives like pipe bombs ready to blow. It's about being powerless in the face of something greater. "Claiming that you know anything involving God is a risky venture." That's not how I interpret the "now you know" bit at all. It's like having your pride destroyed and learning that sometimes you are not in control: "You thought God was an architect" You thought you were building something. "But now you know" that God had other plans for you. "And everything you've built is all for show" because ultimately it was destroyed by something bigger than you, something you cannot control. In 24 frames (1 second). I hope you can separate the artist from the art. Artists don't get to tell you what their art means to you, so their opinions and actions shouldn't affect how you see their art. Jason is an immensely talented guy and I think your life will be richer with his songs in it. Just don't follow him on Twitter. :)

I think you guys missed the point completely. He’s not questioning God, he’s not comparing God to a pipe bomb in a negative way. He’s saying that God’s plan is messy & it’ll blow up everything in your life that’s superficial & not important in a single second to show you what’s really important in life. “You thought God was an architect now you know he’s something like a pipe bomb ready to blow & everything you built THAT’S JUST FOR SHOW goes up in flames, in 24 flames. It’s about a moment of clarity.
