That whole album is a master class in songwriting

Remember him when he was still a proud man A vandals smile A baseball in his right hand Nothing but the blue sky in his eyes Devastating

my favorite of jason’s. it’s an often overlooked song on a brilliant album.

Jason isbell and Tyler Childers give that sound of euphoria that makes you wanna pack your bags and move out of the city into a calm naturalistic setting. When I hear this song I imagine being in some small town with a live performance bar/venue.

This song is the perfect close to the album. In one song, it encapsulates all the emotions all the previous songs touched on. Love, joy, despair, sorrow, hope, melancholy, loneliness, etc. It's all there. I rarely get through this song without both smiling and crying. That line about "when he had nothing but the blue sky in his eyes," when talking about a friend that had died and remembering him when he was younger just guts me.

I think this song serves as a worthy coda to the thematic arcs throughout "Southeastern", a record strewn with death, tragedy, and painful memories by situating all of it in the greater human story. He's not saying it doesn't matter, just that when you realize how much of it there is in the world it in an odd way makes it make more sense, makes you a bit more at peace with it. I've myself come through alot to get to that realization when I thought I was being singled out by life for misfortune but there's always someone else who has had to deal with something like that too and always someone, no matter what, who has had it worse
@TheVCRTimeMachine

I think you are correct. It wraps the whole album up in a little bow and touches on all the emotions and themes the other songs on the album have brought up.

Love Isbell and reactions to his incredible songwriting! Would like to suggest "Overseas", "Only Children", "River", and/or "Dreamsicle" from his Reunions album!

Dreamsicle might be my favourite Jason Isbell song.
@simeonteitelbaum6219
@simeonteitelbaum6219 2 года назад
I'd second these but just my opinion his acoustic versions of "Overseas" is the definitive version, the album version is IMO overblown. Dreamsicle though is the song that lingered the most, its like "Last of my Kind"

@@simeonteitelbaum6219 I don't know about that. They're both so good in their own ways. I really do like the guitar in the studio version of "Overseas" though, personally. Agree that "Dreamsicle" is a spectacular piece of music and masterful storytelling.

@@lparke13 Dreamsicle perfectly captures what childhood is like for kids of divorce. It's heartbreaking. Again, the way he tells a story is just....only compares to Prine.

I don’t think he’s in prison, I think it’s when he was in rehab, he wrote that to Amanda

Thanks so much for this comment. This is my favorite Jason song, but I too took that line in the last verse meaning he was in prison, and it always left the song even more bittersweet. Thinking about the character in rehab makes me feel better for the outcome of the character.
@jonbradley5044

The reason I think it’s rehab not Jail, is he says my evenings now are relatively easy. Meaning his evenings aren’t spent drunk or strung out on something now.

My favorite song by him. The second verse is so, so sad. Hits me in the feels every time.

@Keith Jones That's awesome that you got to see him. I always hope that performers don't go the way of politics, and haven't watched enough to know if Jason is going that way, but in the meantime he is brilliant with a song and lyrics. His wife Amanda is too.

@@RockN2Country Jason has always been political. Even back to his days with the Drive-By Truckers, all of whom are also political. No more so than Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen; but still. There are plenty of artists in music or literature or other forms of media whose politics I disagree with and plenty I agree with. I don't let that have any bearing on my opinion of their art.

The bridge is setting us up for the fact that he's in jail watching the "lucky man" that may have nothing more than his freedom, but he doesn't know by watching him from the inside. Prison was the break that he needed, but he's saying to get away and address your mental health before it gets that far. One of my favorites of his, not initially,, but it crept up there.

You should react to something more than free by Jason Isbell

If you love the lyricism of Jason Isbell (as you've clearly said you do), you really need to check out Josh Ritter. (Jason actually produced his 2019 album "Fever Breaks.") Would love to see you react to something by Josh (I would particularly love to see reactions to "The Temptation of Adam" or "The Curse").

If you haven’t already, check out “Songs She Sang In the Shower”. Another brilliant song. I always loved this one too.. just a beautiful song start to finish.

Such an uplifting major key for the closing of a great album, still deep lyrics that still leave you with a hopeful positive message about mental health awareness. That second verse makes me tear up too darned often.

One of my favorites. I thought the narrator was in jail at the end but, as mentioned below, rehab works better in the story: he would be reflecting on his mistakes but not asking for pity..."compared to others my life is still relatively easy". In one of your reactions to his songs, you mentioned that you wonder if there will ever be another Jason Isbell. A newer female artist is closer than anyone else. (Sorry in advance for raising the bar ridiculously high for her.) I think you'll like Morgan Wade. Some of her songs are: The Night, Through Your Eyes, Wilder Days, and Matches & Metaphors.

Can't go wrong with Jason isbell. I think you would enjoy John R Miller - Shenandoah Shakedown. He's hailed highly by Tyler Childers who covered his song 'Coming Down'.

"I keep a picture of you everyday" - I think this song is referencing his stint in rehab since this album was written/released post rehab. - took the break, certainly not a vacation. They took him away after he shot out the window, etc.
