I have this exact same issue! I also like listening while working on building projects but hate having to stop and read cards, and on my phone sometimes the text is unintelligible. It’s a minor nitpick for the nitpicking nerds, best mtg channel bae none!

War journal entry, 11/5/21: I have to pull calls at my job sometimes and review customer complaints. Our call pulling system is super low volume, so I have to turn my speakers up to hear it. Np. 10am rolls around, jump over to the LOUDEST JOE CHERRIES INTRO TO ECHO DOWN THE HALLS OF ADMINISTRATION, TO THE LOBBY, EVER. Direct boss called, asked what the hell that was, lied and said I'm bumping pandora ads by accident. Laugh nervously, get off the phone. Now I'm just sweating, pale and embarrassed, scared... I can feel IT coming for me now...

I didn't pick up MTG until I already was an adult, and when I got into it with friends, it was during the Ixalan set so we bought a case and shared some packs. I pulled a Foil Etali and it's been my favorite Magic card since, so I'm really excited to see it show up here!

Braids is *okay* when you have those cards that give you flash, so you can at least flash her in during the end step before your turn. It's not totally unreasonable, you ARE in blue

Out here roasting the end raze boar :( he was hinted at in every ravnica set in flavor and when they finally made it card I was so hyped. I know it was small but it was mind blowing for me.

I love my Octavia deck its so fun, I went with wizard tribal for my deck because this reminded me of bloodbornes school called byrginworth and in my eyes when the wizards become 8/8s it's because they tapped into some noodley eldritch knowledge ,good fun !

Nice picks all around! Joe knows what’s up with stompy EDH. Goreclaw is my favorite deck to lend to new commander players. Watching new players trample over fools is a great time, and I like to do some trampling myself from time to time

One of my favorite commanders is Feldon of the third path. it has it all: combo, big bombs, artifacts. Also I put a copy of feldon in all of my red decks becuase he's just that good

The way you guys described Etali is kinda perfect, and what my playgroup calls the "funni" playstyle. We like to cause interactions that would never normally happen, and Etali just so happens to nail it in that it resulted in the Etali player stealing a Ghostly Flicker and using it on a Phage set to kill him the next turn and win out of nowhere.

Atemsis was my second ever Commander deck. It didn’t win often, mainly because I was a terrible pilot of such a weird deck at the time, but when it did win, I got some of the best reactions of like “you son of a bitch, you actually pulled it off!” That deck was probably the biggest influence of why and how I play Commander today

5:50 This card I think was made for all those counter decks. Like old Simic stuff and white or green counter deck. I believe given that the 2nd ability just states any creature with counters on it, so it doesn't care where the counters come from. Also, keeping a low powered commander is not that much of a problem anymore.

Sephara, Sky's Blade needs more love. She's such a fun mon-white deck, and can be devastating, especially equipped with Worldslayer.

I have a tergrid deck in reserve in case one of my friends brings an unfair deck to play against, I don’t know if that’s right of me to do, but I get tired of his refusal to not play op cards so I have it in reserve just in case.

Just built Atemsis, haven't had a chance to play it yet, but I love him. Note that his ability doesn't say "combat" :33 I run Tergrid in the 99 of my Kroxa deck mostly for the lantern (Tergrid might be better, but not as fun). Goreclaw is my Raze-Boar. "We made a the first legendary bear!" "What's a bear?" "A 2/2 for 2." "What does the card do?" "Incentive 4 power creatures." It'd be like if they finally made a Legendary Squirrel (before we had those) and it was a red card that was like "nontoken creatures you control get -1/-1 and have double strike."

I played a game where a guy was running Tergrid. He went 1st. He played Swamp, jeweled lotus, dark ritual, Tergrid and thoughtseize on the guy to my left. He pulled a Jin-Gataxias from his hand before anyone else had a turn. Lame.

Well, that was just lucky, the Jin guy would've reanimated him anyway on his turn, usually Tergrid wheels immediately after hitting the board.

It would be cool if they ever did another Darien card in some throwback set, one that captures the same mechanic but isn't a 6 mana 3/3. Maybe one that is not as abusable but cheaper to play, it would be so cool because that playstyle is so unique for mono white, or commander in general.

Don't worry, I also love elves, and Freyalise is my favorite elf commander. She just feels like the epitome of what an elf commander should do. turn 5 you have 10 little pipsqueaks and 14 mana, you draw a bunch off all your elves with some sorcery, and someone wipes the board and you get to play all 12 of your new elves again. Plus consistent artifact/enchantment removal is very nice to have and Freyalise and elves in general both have that in spades. They do well on a budget, they upgrade well, and also elves are dope.

Beezy, I love elves!! Elf tribal was the first ever commander deck I built. (Granted I now use Lathril as the commander because Nath is now my commander for a more appropriate discard deck) But yes, elves is one of my favorite tribes, along with vampires.

I actually don’t go in WUBRG order, back when I first started playing I couldn’t tell if the colors went in clockwise or counterclockwise on the back of the card, so I read them left to right, white, green, blue, red, then black(I guess you could call it W-GURB). This had the added benefit of putting my favorite guilds together; selesnya, simic, Izzet, and rakdos.

Elves are my favorite tribe, I love that a lot of decks have an Elf subtheme with minimal effort. I have a GW deck that isn't an "Elves" deck but it still has over 10 Elves due to mana dorks and other simple cards like Quirion Ranger and Seeker of Skybreak. I have a Canopy Tactician that is there to be a Thran-Dynamo-on-a-body but also randomly buffs 10% of my deck due to the Elves interaction, and I can run Priest of Titania and consistently get 2+ mana without making the deck lose focus at all. Elves are awesome.

I have never played Nils as as a commander, but I have played him alot in my Shadrix politics/counters and he has done alot of work. Since you deter your oppenents (especially if you get a nice stack on one creature) while turning on your +1/+1 strategy. But also Syr Alin, The Lion's Claw is actually the worst Mono-white commander.

He was like literally the first card I cut from Breena. Like first off everything they say about Ghostly Prison is ACTUALLY true about this guy, plus once he eats a Beast Within you lose everything, AND your opponent has an Eldrazi with 5 counters on it.

Braids is good with Leyland of anticipation etc. What people forget about Vorinclex is to float mana for the removal spell while it is on the stack and then cast once he hits the board so you get to untap the lands.

One of favorite decks is my Ezuri Renegade Leader. I just like assembling a critical mass of Elves and running everyone over in one shot. That way nobody can complain I'm targeting them since I'm killing everyone in the same go.

Another amazing video reminding me how cool Atemsis is and making me want to build it. I will say, although I know people hate it and it's rediculously strong, playing Tergrid is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine because I love stealing my opponents' stuff. Of course I'm careful not to bring it out too often but I do enjoy a Tergrid game on occasion. Although I still do plenty of theft in other less un-fun ways. That's what Xanathar and Tibalt are for, eh? But seriously I need to build Atemsis now. I forgot that card existed.

I feel like I would have so much trouble making a discussion topic like this because I'd be stuck between choosing Poopy garbage like Veldrane of Sengir or shit that creates incredibly unfun or boring lines of play like several of your choices. just as a quick thought experiment... White: Best- Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle Worst- Hokori, Dust Drinker Blue: Best- Eligeth, Crossroads Augur Worst- Teferi, Archmage of Zhalfir or... I dunno. Blind Seer? Black: Best- Nightmare Moon/Princess Luna (or honestly, Yahenni, Undying Partisan) Worst- Honestly.... Tergrid was a pretty based pick. Shout-outs to K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth, though. Red: Best- Norin, the Wary Worst- I dunno, probably... Chandler? Jovin? Green: Best- Titania, Protector of Argoth? (I kinda find mono-green to be boring...) Worst- The Tarrasque, for it's HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE flavor fail.

I don't know if I agree with yall on Nils. Yeah his first ability is pretty bad, but I think the focus is that he shuts down anything with counters. He's definitely not great, but I think he fits a certain meta. Land, some artifact, or hydra creatures get the heck out of here! Love you guys as much as I can without it being weird!

I don't necessarily like elves but I love a good elf ball deck as green is my favorite color. Green is the best color in the format. It has the best ramp, draw, creatures, and removal. It's the only color that has it all, and is more explosive than the others. The only things it lacks are counterspells and mass boardwipes.

joe saying magic goes in wubrg order is wrong because when you look at multicolored cards like for example simic (ug) cards they have green before blue which would be wgurb order

Goreclaw is no joke in my Xenagos deck, same thing with Ilarg. They both make huge swings after hitting the board. Lets you play big hasty fatties with really good abilities even quicker.

So the homeward path trick with Gisa and Decayed doesn't actually work! Basically when you attack with a decayed creature it sets up a trigger for you that says you have to sacrifice the creature at the end of combat, okay great. But if you homeward path before that trigger happens you no longer control the creature. Which means when the trigger comes up for you to sacrifice the creatures, you can't! You can't sacrifice things you don't control and you're the one being instructed to sacrifice them. Admittedly, the creatures will still have decayed so if your opponents ever choose to attack with them they'll have to sacrifice them and you'll get them then, but it's not so good as stated here.

I was wondering the same. Perhaps you gain control of those creatures again, since they're still cards that were exiled by Gisa. This is only an assumption, I have no idea if it'd work that way tho.

My God-Eternal Oketra deck is just tons of creatures that find/draw more cards, tons of utility creatures, and tons of mana dork creatures. Barely any noncreatures, so Vryn Wingmare and Thalia are insane in the deck.

What's not to like about Freyalise? She makes mana dorks, can destroy artifacts and enchantments, and can draw a bunch of cards with her alt? Does not have to be Elf tribal, can go in ANY green deck and put in work. Also play Elvish Piper, get it onto the battlefield and you can cheat out ANY creature for the low, low, price of a green mana. Again, does not have to be elf tribal.

10:40 I don't hate playing with Baral at all! So many times the Baral player has stopped somebody from immediately ending the game. I get that there's people who want games to end to start a new one, but I actually love the gamestate where everybody has deep mana pockets and a handful of spells and the game is at the most intense. Baral keeps that gamestate going the longest. Baral decks are such a great addition to high power pods.

Your problem with Tergrid is my problem with Atemsis. I have an Atemsis deck full of stuff that makes it unblockable or turns it into a Timmy.

Was Varchild already out when this video dropped? Because I really, really love the design of that card. Same for Subira, Tulzidi Caravanner. Really inceentivizes you to play cards in commander you normally wouldn't play!

I think Elves are the favorite creature type of storm players in disguise. You get to eventually smash face but man the wheel spinning you get to do before that. It really feels like a grapeshot kill after a bunch of cantrips. Also yeah Freyalise rocks. Most fun mono green commander. She has a freaking eyepatch!

Agitator Ant, Orzhov Advokist, and Evolutionary Escalation have been pretty fun cards in my games. Everyone gets counters but I tend to get MOAR out of those counters. Totally agree on Ilharg, we have gone to Ravnica how many times andddd we have never heard about Ilharg the great Boar God, Razer of Ravnica? Love the card in my Xenagos though :P

I have a tergrid deck, but I rarely bring it out. If I do, it's a game of archenemy; everyone tries to take me out as quickly as possible. Similar to when I play my Marieke deck. Some playgroups I'm in are spikey, so I don't mind playing mean decks sometimes with them.

I like elves, Beezy. Mine are currently headed up by mono-green Omnath. I had one several years ago with Ramos, Dragon Engine at the helm. That deck was pretty bonkers.

@@NitpickingNerds More than anything, Ramos gives access to all 5 colors, and with the big mana elves can produce, it got out of hand quickly. X draw spells in blue and X damage spells in red became much more significant. I could drop Omniscience way sooner than the average deck. I could run Recycle and Null Profusion. It was lots of fun.

I love Atemsis. Kefnet the Mindful is a powerhouse in that deck. Also cards that ping like Viridian Bow let’s you win without swinging since Atemsis just has to deal damage. Does not have to be combat…

I’m halfway to making a fun Baral deck - in blue it’s pretty easy to fetch Chalice of the Void (Fabricate, Whir of Invention, Trinket Mage, etc). At this point you can jam every zero drop ever and loot through a MAJORITY of your deck (especially if you hit Mana Severance). Only problem is I don’t know what the payoff would be 😂😂😂 anyone help me out? Or am I just forcing some garbage?
