Sorry about your dad Scott. That segment at the end where you talked about him really hit me. My grandmother died before Covid from cancer. I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to her either, and it tore me apart. But what you said about how your dad views afterlife really made me chuckle a bit. Because my grandmother was religious but she shared a similar sentiment to “returning to the universe,” as you put it. Whether or not you’re religious, hearing people talk about those kinds of outlooks and perspectives makes you think. Nobody gets to choose how it happens. But there’s a nice sense of unity that can be taken from the idea that when our time comes, we all in a way flow back to where we started. Like the water in a river flowing towards a great big ocean.

Heiter completely changed my view on the afterlife. For a long time, I shared Frieren’s and Eisen’s own view on death. That afterwords, there is only oblivion. It terrified me. But now Heiter’s words resonate with me on a level I was never prepared for. “Heaven exists. It’s more convenient if it does.” I just… understood something in that instant, same as Frieren and Eisen. Whether something like Heaven exists or not is irrelevant. It’s much better to think that something like it exists. And as an adult now I can see that time truly does start to slip away in a blink. Time marches onwards faster than I can process and soon, I know if I don’t change something about myself I will forever regret the missed opportunities. Freiren is a masterpiece and I love it. It’s something I never even knew I needed until Frieren just fell into my life and flipped it upside down.
@TheKiroshi
@TheKiroshi 2 месяца назад
Hard anti-thiest here, but i will say something about the phrase "it's just more convenient if it does" means a good amount to me. There's nothing less than evidence that would convince me of an afterlife even without a religious context. But the deep honesty of hoping that life always carries on even post-death is a romantic and hopeful idea. Even if you've every better choice to make sure you're 1 life is compelling and impactful, if your idea of heaven is just to live a good life to live a good afterlife, i couldn't bother anyone for making their life [and in turn, other's lives] better, happier and deeper commited to community they can help, its why I'm anti-thiest, and to share that value regardless of source, its what i want from the world.

I shed a few tears at the segment about Kaiser's dad, both for his loss and because it summoned my memories of the weekend my Grandpa died in 2022. He had been in a care facility for a while. I went home from college for the weekend, because we knew it was gonna be the last time I'd see him. We all visited him as he laid silently in his bed, and sometime early the next morning after he'd seen both his children and all three grandkids (myself, my sibling and our cousin), he passed away. We went back in to see him again. Life really is short. We don't really have that much time to spend it, and it's important to treasure the time that we have.

Thank you, Scott, for your words at the end of the Frieren segment. I lost my grandpa in december under very similar circumstances, although I was at least able to see him one last time. I wasn't expecting to have that topic brought up today, but there's something beautiful in the ways people still feel connected to their loved ones and I'm glad you shared your perspective. As for my perspective, my grandpa built a house where he did anything he could by himself. The entire property with almost everything on it is his legacy. He may be dead, but through his incredible dedication to building and maintaining a home for his family, he's still with us.

I mean, the only people who seem to be upset about Scott Pilgrim being called an anime are MAL, and let's be real here. They have so many examples on their site that break the rules they arbitrarily decided on, that they pretty much lost all credibility long before they got their panties in a twist over this show that conforms to said arbitrary rules. Why expend useful energy worrying about what they think?

@@MrFraknak Well yeah sure, it being on the list definitely makes no sense... If you didn't spend like ten minutes listening to him explain what the show meant to him, and why he thinks it's great. Truth is, these lists are never meant to be objective facts, they're just one person's opinion, and as long as that person explains why their opinion is their opinion, why complain? If you want a list that conforms to your own personal, subjective opinion, then why not make one yourself?

I was really excited to hear your thoughts on Frieren after you talked about it on Twitter. Sir. This is the first time a review video has made me cry ever. The way you talked about Frieren was the most eloquent and heartfelt description I've ever heard of any anime, of any show. Your opening metaphor about winter hit home straight through the chest. I found myself lost in your deep, personal oration and could feel my body grow heavier and heavier as you progressed. I can tell it really meant a lot to you from that segment. And tying it back to your dad broke me. I was just as awed by your thoughts as I was by the show if not more so. Thank you, so much, for your beautiful words.

I couldn't help but think of my grandfather. . . and my regrets that he never knew me as his granddaughter. I started transitioning back before covid. Time really does just start to slip away from you, it seems. My relatives are very Catholic, or at best, Protestant Evangelical. But my grandfather was a very kind man. I wish I had gotten to tell him. My grandmother was always quick to speak for him, and sometimes over him, and made it clear that she wouldn't have me talking to him as he was sick and in declining health. She said it would only make him upset. After 2 years of slowly, very very shyly and with great anxiety, coming out to more of the family, I didn't have it in me to argue with her at the time. Afterall, there would always be more time later, right? In 2019 things came to a head with my relatives, and what was supposed to be me taking a much needed mental health break from them for a couple weeks while I sorted things out, became me leaving my home state to move in with friends and cutting ties for my own safety. I never got the chance to sit down with my grandfather, throw on a movie (he loved watching movies with us), and introduce him to his grand*daughter*. One year later, to the month, I got the notification that he has passed. By this point the constant online stalking and refusal to give me any peace had forced me to abandon social media and change my phone number, so it was quite the feat that they managed to find another way to hurt me after using him as an emotional blackmail chip against me when I left. It all went so wrong so fast and only got worse, but my greatest regret is that I never did get to talk to him, the one family member that I knew would be the most supportive. He was a good man. He led a long life, and I knew him into my 30s, but he was still gone too soon. I still pull out his favorite cream soda each year and think of him. Time really does just start to slip away when you get bogged down in the daily grind of survival. Frieren crying over having missed out on her chance to know Himmel better... it hurt. I worked just a quarter mile up the road from him. Everyday I had the chance to see him more, to hang out and get to know him better, and I let it slip away from me. I was tired, I was concerned with my own life's intricacies, and I didn't make time for him like he deserved. I will always regret that. And I will never make that mistake again. Tell the people close to you that you love them. Make time to just sit and chat one in a while. Don't regret the time you didn't spend being near the people you love.

I would have loved a faithful retelling of Scott Pilgrim just fine. But what we got is what I didn't know I needed, and never would have dared hope for. It feels like the capstone on the story: a celebration of everything that came before, but also something that feels like it acknowledges how the culture and attitudes have changed in the years since it came out, and addresses those issues, by spotlighting and exploring all the flaws and cracks in the story that have emerged since

Frieren has captured the oddest feeling when I first read it. The idea of mourning someone you never knew meant so much to you. I had this experience before, it was after I found out that this person on their death bed did the smallest gesture for my health. It was so minute, but knowing he had that care for me in his final days, it broke me. It made cry the first most honest tears of loss of a fellow human in my life. So seeing Frieren crying despite thinking her relationship meant so little to her it moved me. Also the story is strangely life affirming and that cottage core esthetic just gives me the good vibes.

Hey Scott, if you do happen to read this, I just want you to know the end of this is something I think I desperately needed to hear. For the past 4 years, but especially the past 2 in particular, I've been coming to terms with several things in my life. Feeling lonely, feeling older, feeling mad at myself, afraid of things only getting worse before they may never get better, and above all else; death. I'm not that old, and I'm sure ultimately in the end I have more life in me than I may think I do, but I'm starting to get to an age where I feel I can only call myself an "Adult" as opposed to a "Young Adult," and with that, the biggest fear that I keep thinking I've confronted is behind me, it starts to come back. I'm so afraid of pain and especially loss that it genuinely keeps me from sleeping properly most nights. I've not lost an immediate family member or close friend yet that feels out of the blue, and quite frankly that's what scares me more than anything. I'm so afraid of waking up one day and not being to say my last words of importance to someone important to me and I don't know if it's ever truly possible to be prepared for something like that. But, in the end, I think what you said is especially important to me and something that makes not want to feel selfish in my fear; "When someone is gone, a part of them will carry on with you, always." And, I think especially after (please don't make fun of me lol) replaying all of Final Fantasy VII and it's remake counterparts, that idea is getting solidified for me several times over and it's something I really want to help comfort me away from my fear of death. I know it's probably impossible to kill a fear that large without being on deaths door itself, but I just want to make comfort with it easier. As someone who's fortunate enough to see my dad stare death square in the face more than 4 to times and watch him walk away unscathed, it's comforting to have him but ultimately so much more terrifying to see him go for good. "Some day death is gonna... Stick." I know that's a one off line for Goku in DBZA, but that line genuinely has stuck with me from the Pandemic onward. I'm rambling and I'm sorry for that lol, but, I just want you to know that you said something I think I've been running from instead of confronting and I thank you a lot from that Scott. You're an amazing person and a great voice to listen to. I hope your dad is with you in spirit even now, and I'm sure he is. ❤

Great job with these lists! I loved your thoughts on these series, and very much appreciate that you were willing to share your tragedy with us as a capstone to it. It's not easy talking about losses like that, and I hope that your friends and community continue to rally around and support you. As for this list, there are a couple of surprising omissions, but the majority are great choices. I do highly recommend both The Apothecary Diaries, which has consistently kept pace with Frieren as one of the best anime of the last two seasons, and The Dangers in My Heart, which is the best anime romance I've seen in a long time and all the more exceptional during its second season.

Regarding Discworld, one of the great things is that there is really no wrong book from the series to start with. I have a friend who owns dozens of them and once in awhile when we are talking about a subject, he will mention one of the books having an interesting perspective on it and offer to loan it to me. I've gotten through Small Gods, The Color of Magic, The Last Hero, Hogfather, Going Postal, and the first three Tiffany Aching books (and a few others I can't recall at the moment) and I've never felt lost because Pratchett does a masterful job of giving you all the context you need (and letting you realize the full context when you read other the books). Characters from different series will appear of be mentioned in other series and it never feel unnatural or forced because they share the same world and space and it never drags to tell you about those characters more than fits for the story (such as who is the werewolf in the City Watch of Ankh-Morpork).

I got around to this video yesterday, and hearing you talk about your dad really stuck with me. I lost my older sister back in January of this year, and every single thing you said described exactly how I've been feeling these past two months. And then of course, just a few hours after I watched this, they announced Akira Toriyama's passing, and I came right back to this video to hear your speech again. Those were words I really needed to hear right now, just as I'm sure they're words you needed to get off your chest, Scott. Knowing that I'm not alone in my grief has been a massive weight off my shoulders, even if we're grieving for different people, and I thank you so much for sharing this with us. Keep up the great work, man. ❤

The pain is always there, but the scar will grow, and it will hurt less often. The comment your father made reminds me of a quote from B5: "The molecules of your body are the same molecules that make up this station, and the nebula outside, that burn inside the stars themselves. *We are starstuff.* We are the universe made manifest, trying to figure itself out..."

The segment on Frieren and your dad brought tears to my eyes. Being able to watch that insanely moving story was incredibly helpful for my own grief, and I hope it helped you too. I'm getting closer to 1.5 years since my dad died (during my first semester of college, that certainly put a hold on things) and it's just... hard. sometimes. Hard when I miss him, hard when I feel guilty for missing him cause I remember he wasn't a good guy in the first place, and hard when I miss him again anyways. No matter who we lose, we always manage to find away to blame ourselves for something, even when there's nothing we could've done, or when the time has passed anyways. All I can do is process my grief and support my mom, who's going through it in her own way. I hope you're processing everything and grieving him the way you need to, and I hope you have a bunch of mementos and memories to remember him by.

I‘m sorry about your dad. I just lost my grandpa on monday. He was in most ways extremely lucky to have a long life, to not suffer great pain at the end of his life and to die being held by my grandmother. Yet the reality of him just… no longer being there and any possibility of ever talking to him again being gone is still devastating. And you‘re right, Frieren is about that in most ways. And it gives me some comfort.

Scott's final words really resonated with me. I know all to well, how awful that feels. I have experienced a really severe heartbreak, when my father, that i was very, very close to, died suddenly. I was 12 back then. That's not an experience I would wish on anyone, especially at such vulnerable age. I wasn't just broken. I was completely devastated. I got over it after a few years, and now I am not getting attached to anyone, so I don't have that problem any more. I also view the death in a different light (as a release from suffering) - that also helps. In most ways, both his life and his departure has shaped the way I am.

As someone who has been obsessed with Pluto, outright my favorite manga for ten long years, I have two primary gripes with the adaptation, and funny enough is both concern the same character (spoilers obviously): The first is they didn't adapt the moment where Gesicht actually DOES insert Brau's chip and is met with a swirling vortex of incomprehensible madness; I get that in terms of the plot it wasn't really THAT important but damn it was in the top five scenes i was most excited to see in animation and its lack of inclusion bums me out The second is THE ENDING, specifically them putting the scene with Brau and Roosevelt BEFORE the final moment with Atom. In the manga it's the FINAL scene, played like an mid/after-credits scene (literally in the final volume you get a page of credits before the scene) as one final badass hurrah, and kind of ironically putting it where it was makes it feel like more of an afterthought than it would have putting it after the credits....

There was a feeling of dread I couldn’t shake when I left that night and the hole that was left the next day when I found out she was gone never truly went away. This November marks the turning point of I’ll have lived my life longer without her in it…and yet I carry her voice in me, never forgetting the kind, fun, loving woman she was. Stay strong, Scott. That’s the greatest thing we can do for the ones we loved…that we lost.

OMG a Beck - Mongolian chop squad reference! Legit one of my favourite ever anime's that doesn't get anywhere near enough love! Great list Kaiser, completely agree with Frieren, it's got me out of my semi-retirement for watching Japanese anime, and is just beautiful. It feels both more adult and slower paced than a lot of animes, and I hope it means we get a new wave of animations focused at a more mature audience (although I guess Attack on titan may have started that).

the quick shots of "Gen Urobuchi's "A" material" for the Revenger honorable mention has me curious now if Scott's watched Thunderbolt Fantasy at all, and if so how he feels about it.

I'm sorry for your loss Scott. I unfortunately understand the feeling as well as I lost my father back in 2020 due to cancer. Only time will heal your aching heart but as you said....their memory will live on forever in you. Keep your chin up and take care of yourself and spend as much time as you can with those u love as we never know when our time will come.

Frieren has made me laugh and cry more than any other anime these past few months…and nothing else is all that close, either. (Even if I can’t get past the octave change in the dub, despite being able to tell the VA is doing a great job). Really glad to have you back doing review videos, Scott - the MHA roundtables are how I got into 4SB…and 4SB is why I now read manga.

I lost my mother under similar circumstances a few months before Scott's father passed. Less than a day after she'd been admitted to the hospital for a sudden illness, I received word that things had taken a drastic turn. We had a complicated, often strained relationship, but I can't express how quickly some of the bad memories melt away when you're left wishing you'd had more time. Let the people you love know it.

49:30 Yes...but that's exactly how Frieren felt. Before she knew it, in just "One episode" the great hero is dead. With frieren wishing she could have developed their relationship better, but it's too late. Only her memories remain. And she can only look back on them.

The show had me thinking of my Elder Brother whom I lost over a decade, and it he whom introduced me DBZA Abridged right when it first started. Kaiser I mean this with all the love in my heart, Fuck you for always making me cry one way or another in your videos. Also would love more anime breackdown videos of yours. Frieren is just a *delight*. It's one of those shows that is ostensibly about medieval D&D-esque fantasy that has been cropping up in recent years, but what becomes apparent is it is ACTUALLY about grief. And for those of us who have been through that ourselves, it's very hard to NOT get sucked in by the emotional beats of this show. It is achingly beautiful in its storytelling, structure and animation style and I *hate* that we only get but one episode per week. However, consequently, every Friday afternoon is a special treat.

My one issue with Shangri-La Frontier is that is does not understand how insanely obsessive gamers are about games they like. SLF has been out for like a year, and in that time about 100 no lifers would've picked it dry just to fill out the wiki and get details on every bit of lore, gear, and build synergies possible. Most of the Colussi would've been documented within a few months, even if they weren't beaten in that time.
