I first came across this niche genre when finding a video about WipEout pure on PPSSPP running on a Blackberry. And now it kinda won my heart. It's one of my favorite genres of all time.

Interesting entryway into the genre :) I guess you've already tried it but WipeOut Pulse is in my opinion an improvement upon pure as it ads the campaign grid which is a much more logical way of progressing through the game. Thanks a lot for your comment!

First of all, your subscriber count blows my mind. I’d never looked before now, I had just assumed you’d have 80k+ with such high quality content! I found your channel 2 weeks ago which is when I picked up my first AG racer - Wipeout Omega Collection. I’m absolutely loving it so far and can’t put it down. Great video and I agree it’s a fantastic point of entry to the genre. I sometimes upload gameplay clips and have been particularly enjoying the speed laps after the 2048 campaign. I’m yet to fully dive into HD/Fury but looking forward to it! The amount of content you get with this collection is incredible value for money and the game is super rewarding to master! Already picked up Redout and no doubt will be keen for even more AG racing from this point forward!

Thank you so much for those kind words! I do put a lot of effort into making my content look and feel professional and I do have som RU-vid-experience from running another channel so I'm very happy to hear that my work is paying off. I'm glad you're enjoying Omega Collection, I agree with everything you said about it. I also checked out one of your videos too and you're a great driver! It would be super fun if you wanted to join us in upcoming races with the community.

@@AGRacingCentral and I think this is understandable. I was on the opposite end of the spectrum. I tried RO1 back in the day and it just wasn't for me (limited use of rumble features, and f-zero like handling wasn't really in my taste), while R02 clicked for me much easier. But the reason I think it's understandable is that both games are so philosophically different. I personally find it extremely jarring to switch between these two games, because they both share that core look (though, lo-fi vs... modern...fi....?), but couldn't be anymore different once you did something as basic as "take the next turn". I think at the end of the day, they're both great games, and that fans could stand to recognize that just because they have preferences, it doesn't make either game weaker than the other, and they both stand up in their own right.

Redout 2 and BallisticNG are without doubt the two top PC AG racing games, covering entirely different styles. GRIP is also a very unique racing game that includes AG vehicles. Before these games were released, I was fiercely jealous of consoles as nothing was comparable to the Wipeout omega collection.

Pacer is hard to love because you go in looking for a worthy WO Omega successor. The truth is that regardless of the company using some original Psygnosis employee the game is just a drift racer with weapons. That also explains why Pacer comes off as a remaster of WO Pulse that they built 16 years ago. Sideshifts, barrel rolls , track exploits alternate routes and expert shortcuts have all been eliminated. Jumps serve no purpose but hear you ship slam to the surface upon landing. It's great looking but that wears thin over time. It could've been so much more but those guys really kneecapped themselves trying to spite WO Omega.
@AGRacingCentral
@AGRacingCentral Год назад
I completely agree that Pacer didn’t live up to its full potential. If you compare it to WO Omega Collection, it’s obviously an inferior game. The more time I spend with Pacer though, the more I am enjoying it actually. The turning point was when I stopped looking at it as a WipEout game and started to appreciate it as it’s own entity. That being said, Pacer still has its shortcomings, so I totally hear what you are saying.

Just do what everyone else did in the 2000s and play F-zero GX Story mode 🤣 But in all seriousness, Wipeout Omega Collection is a great start. I played the heck out of Wipeout HD/Fury back in college. Wipeout 3 SE and Wipeout Pulse are excellent classics as well.

The thing about Redout and Redout 2 is they play very differently. Redout is much more slippery with its controls, you slide a lot and wall bouncing is a cornerstone of keeping your speed up. Redout 2 is much more responsive and personally I feel has better track design, the responsiveness makes it much more approachable and while the original had some great tracks, Redout 2 tracks are a bit tighter and more technical, while having shorter straights. Because of this the tracks are longer and more involved, while Redout has simpler tracks.
@AGRacingCentral
@AGRacingCentral Год назад
Great explanation about the games differences, I have heard people mention the wall bounce aspect before. My guess is that they tried to make Redout 2 more accessible and welcoming to more players but they still succeeded in making the game feel relatively hard core at the same time.
@cdgonepotatoes4219
@cdgonepotatoes4219 5 месяцев назад
@@AGRacingCentralRedout 2 is an upgrade on all fronts compared to the previous title, 34BigThings learned all the lessons Redout 1 taught them and they came out with a game I can't not recommend. The only reason I may not suggest playing Redout 2 is if you want to play the previous title first, because while Redout 1 is still very enjoyable and with visuals you don't really see elsewhere, returning to it from 2 is jarring: you move slower, the sense of speed isn't as well made, the ships are less responsive, some of the track design is plain villainous and non-aesthetic customization is nearly non-existent. Wall-bouncing was a must I never truly got used to, and wall-grinding back when the barrier friction was lower also wasn't a pleasant strategy (it got patched out). It's great that in Redout 2 they encourage perfect laps with brakes boosting dissipation and health being a valuable resource for additional speed, I'd rather leave the "bumping into things as a feature" to Burnout and Thumper.

Just a correction for F-Zero, ignoring F-Zero 99 which came out after this video, the most recent F-Zero game was F-Zero Climax on the GBA released exclusively in Japan on October 21st, 2004 (literally just a month before the DS came out, so no wonder it flopped). But honestly it's not worth mentioning beyond that. It had a track editor and updated visuals over the previous two GBA F-Zero titles but that's it. Also, for F-Zero, I'd argue it's actually worth getting your hands on a copy of GX and a Gamecube, or even seeking out an AX unit. To this day there is NOTHING truly like F-Zero GX. Aero GPX and XF: eXtreme Formula come close but while they do feel similar they fall behind massively on track design. Anyway, with that being said I would not recommend F-Zero GX as a first AG Racing title, as its handling is a bit twitchy and the shear amount of speed you encounter in that game are INSANE. If you want to get into more of the F-Zero side of things, F-Zero X is probably a good starting point as it's significantly easier to control, though again keep in mind it's a pretty dated game.
@AGRacingCentral
@AGRacingCentral 9 месяцев назад
Thanks a lot for the correction, I completely missed that in my research. I have been more on the Wipeout side of things as far as AG racing goes and never got the opportunity to play F-Zero GX. I've only heard good things though and it looks interesting that the game focuses a bit more on characters and story, something you only can find in the Wipeout franchise by researching the lore outside of the games. Hopefully the series will see a bit of a resurgence with the release of F-Zero 99!

It's actually worth noting that F-Zero Climax is an enhanced version of F-Zero GP Legend, which actually was released in the states. In my opinion, the game is really fun thanks to a smooth handling model and good sense of speed. Probably one of the most fun 2D racers out there.
@VestedUTuber
@VestedUTuber День назад
@@mallow2902 I wouldn't say it's just an enhanced version. The only thing that really carries over is most of the handling model and the fact it's a Mode 7 game, GP Legend honestly has more in common with Maximum Velocity.

I remember playing a similar game in the past, it was probably a demo that came on a CD-ROM bundled with some old 3dfx graphics card that I had (I don't remember the details though). When i was younger, I had my first exposure to anti gravity racing through F-Zero X on the Nintendo 64 and honestly after playing both that and Mario Kart 64, i still preferred F-Zero cuz of the immense amount of high speed, high octane danger it provided. Mario Kart just felt too casual for my liking.
@AGRacingCentral
@AGRacingCentral Год назад
I agree with you. From an aesthetic and gameplay perspective, the two games you mentioned are certainly quite different. Jumping ahead to today, Mario Kart 8 seems to certainly have the amount of depth as the next racing game but the sense of attitude and futurism that you get from an AG racer is really unmatched. Good thing you have the option to play F-Zero X on a Nintendo Switch if you ever want to re-experience your childhood :)

Why..... why does every game make it look like all the crafts are sliding everywhere and not fixed on the craft like F-zero games? F-zero GX is still by far the king of the sensation of speed and difficulty. These other games just look difficult to pilot due to the camera. Nintendo seriously needs to make another F-zero and not change any mechanics. Just new courses, drivers, and course editor.
@AGRacingCentral
@AGRacingCentral 9 месяцев назад
Well we just got F-Zero 99 so that's a good thing I guess :) There is some getting used to the mechanics in other games but if you put in the time, there are many fun AG racing experiences to be had out there. The F-Zero games does give you the feeling that the crafts are attached to the track rather than hovering above it but from my experiences, drifting is definitely a thing :) Even though I'm slightly more drawn to the Wipeout spectra of AG racing, I really want to try F-Zero GX. I hope Nintendo will release some kind of virtual Gamecube console one day.
@VestedUTuber
@VestedUTuber 9 месяцев назад
It's because, for some reason, a vast majority of AG racers lean more towards Wipeout rather than F-Zero. It's not just the camera either, those games control as floaty as they look. Honestly I think there's a technical reason behind the preference towards the floatier, slower feel of Wipeout. I actually dabbled a bit in developing an AG racer of my own, inspired by the Mode 7 F-Zero games but in 3D, and even at the kinds of speeds those games reach I found it very difficult to prevent racing vehicles from phasing through collision barriers. There's only really only two ways to do it - collision predetection, which is tricky to do right, and just simply cranking up the physics calculation rate, which is tough on hardware. At the slower pace of Wipeout you don't have those issues.
