Thank you for watching! What are your thoughts on anti-gravity racing in recent times? Any particular games already released that you like to play or maybe an upcoming release you're looking forward to?
Don't forget GRIP: Combat Racing. Functions very similar to an AG racing game and half the craft are AG (other half have oversized wheels, all craft can function upside down too). Had a lot of fun with that one. VR supported too, but apparently is a little queasy with flipping too your roof all the time.
I do know about Grip and actually own the game too but haven't gotten around to trying it out yet. Thank you for the suggestion though, it's about time I get around to actually play it. And it's antigravity aspects may be reason enough to have included it in this video too :)
@@AGRacingCentral GRIP is incredibly fun. It probably has my favorite track designs in a racing game behind F-Zero GX and Mario Kart 8. The physics can be a bit annoying (like flipping from touching a pebble) but when it works, it really works. No other game I've tried has given me that in-the-zone F-Zero GX feel.
I've tried them all but BallisticNG is the king of AG Racing Games hands down. Great gamplay, lots of cool tracks, magnificent atmosphere and old school electronic music. You won't be disappointed!
Thanks a lot for the suggestion, I've only heard good things about it. I'm happy to say that I've finally got a Steam Deck and BallisticNG is on top of my buying list!
Very nice video here, and I agree. Things are getting better for anti-gravity racers. Though I would say, 2024 just might look pretty good too. Super Pilot and Phaseshift are both Early Access right now, but continue F-Zero and Extreme-G's styles respectively. Aero GPX, one of the anticipated titles is set to launch this month next year, VoidSpeed Outlaws and Ripshot are two other games who are still being worked on. There's also Galaxy's Extreme on Steam as well. Some of the games I brought up may not launch in 2024, but those are some of the others that I know are in development.
Thanks a lot, glad you liked the video! I knew about some of the games you mentioned but definitely not all. Sounds like a great idea to make a video about upcoming AG Racers, if you don’t think I’m ”stealing” the idea of course. I’ll make sure to check out your channel too!
What is really needed is for an AG racer to be built from the ground up as a spectator friendly eSport. If that was successful then we would see a whole lot more AG racers.
I think that is a great idea. There are racing games out there that are successful in multiplayer like Mario Kart, Crash Team Racing and Forza Horizon and maybe also the upcoming Disney Speedstorm. If everything is implemented correctly, I'm confident an AG Racer could compete for the multiplayer audience too. Thank you for your comment!
I think Redout is the perfect game to become a eSport, if for anything else, but for the fact that this franchise helped to revive the AG genre. On thing tough, is that i actually prefer that Redout franchise invest in some story, the world building of Redout is awesome, with some really cool sci fi ideas, all it needs is develop more of it's lore, like give faces and backstory to AI pilots, be more like F-Zero, but more mature too.
Fast RMX surprised me the most back when I bought it in the Switch launch window. Outside of some annoying stage hazards the stage variety and sense of speed are INSANE for a portable device. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun AG racer for the Switch.
wipeout from Psygnosis will always be my favorite. Its more then nostalgia I just adore the artistic style that studio had. The music was spot on, the artistic image of those games had such a good feel to them as well. Feel that the games just wernt the same after Wi3out although Fusion was good fun.
I did own a PS2 but for some reason I didn't play Fusion. I did play the PS1 games though and I couldn't agree more, the sense of style in those games were spot on and nothing we had seen before at the time. Really glad we have BallisticNG to play today :) Thank you for your comment!
yeah gotta agree there tbh id pinpoint it on psygnosis getting absorbed a bit more into sony after 3 and the departure of the designers republic from the series after they worked extensively on the visual design of those ps1 entries
Nice to find a YT channel that cover futuristic Anti-Gravity racing games since are my thing (well racing games in general but the AG genre is my favorite), specially since F-Zero GX is my personal favorite game of all time (along with Extreme-G and WipEout HD Fury in second place). Nice video by the way, it's great to see some titles covered which actually I played various of them but still there are some missing titles like: Radial-G: Racing Revolved: It was released back on 2016 but it was overshadowed by Redout, lol!, it's a very good game with neat music on it and is available on PC and PS4. Ion Driver: A glorified tech demo game exclusively on PS4 which is kind bad and sadly it had potential of be a F-Zero like game. Super Pilot: A nice F-Zero X style game with the option of an editor for create tracks on it, similar to the F-Zero X Expansion Kit on N64DD, it's available only on PC. Cosmic Challenge Racing: A free-to-play game available on mobile (Android and iOS), it's a decent AG racing game but sadly it has various problems of track's design, forced motion sensor gameplay and like almost every f2p game: tons of microtransactions..., at least a good aspect is that it can be played offline.
Thank you for your comment, glad you found my channel! Also, thank you for all the games you suggested. Some of them have been suggested to me before but some where new. I'm not a hard core PC player so I do miss out on some Steam exclusive games. I have however played Ion Driver for a couple of hours. It actually feels great to play as long as you don't touch any walls :D
I really hope that Redout 2 gets more content, right now it deserves a lot more than it has. Admittedly though, I worry on account of the fact that the original Redout has gotten a patch more recently than Redout 2
I hope so too. It's a little alarming that ranked online and community challenges has been marked "Coming soon" for a little bit too long now... Given the community surrounding Redout 2, I am however hopeful the game became as popular as the publisher and developer wanted so they can stick to their plan of supporting the game.
Haha, yes the lore is quite expansive and detailed for that franchise :) Too bad it’s more or less completely excluded from the games but at least there’s a lot of fun reading on the wiki page.
i dunno how old your vid is but there is ballisticng out there and its basically what we could have got if wipeout XL or 3 got a remaster, and its a glorious, brilliant old school AG racing mechanics
Thanks a lot for the tip! I briefly mentioned BNG at the beginning but since I uploaded this video, I've bought the game myself and played it for several hours. I agree with everything you said about it, it's a truly great game!
Yes, it’s a bit of a shame those games aren’t really available aside from on emulators. I think the first game can be bought for the PS Vita but that’s about it. We can always hope for a remaster collection I guess! :)
Thanks a lot! That would be a great idea. I'm still getting some more game time in a few titles to make an assessment that is as fair as possible but a top list video is definitely in the works. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting!
Yup, couldn't agree more :) I do hope we'll et to see more similar games in the future, BallisticNG and Redout 2 are games that at least has been very critically acclaimed.
I'm sorry to hear that. It is true that many games in this genre is challenging and very fast, really testing your reflexing. I don't know which ones you've tried but a few titles go a bit easier on you in the beginning at least. If you own a PS4 or PS5 you definitely want to check out WipeOut Omega Collection. It's one of the best AG Racers ever made and the campaign starts off quite slow. If you own any other gaming platform I'd say go for Redout 2. It has a lot of assistances that can be turned on if things get too demanding. Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you'll get into Antigravity Racing some day :)
If you already own Wipeout omega collection start with the HD campaign and move onto the 2048 campaign later, since HD is alot more new player friendly
As someone who's played AG-R games since Micronaut One on the ZX Spectrum, I'm pretty hopeful for the future. Rumblings of a WipEout film, BallisticNG getting continued support, Super Pilot doing good things, WipEout Phantom Edition holding up the "smaller project" banner and a possible re-launch (though I'm a little sceptical of the motives) for Pacer. Now, if Sony could get their finger out and release the WipEout series on PC!
Thanks a lot for the comment! Those were some news and games I wasn't all that aware of myself. Great to hear some more enthusiasm for what the future has to bring :)
I've seen XF Xtreme Formula been mentioned before in my comment sections but Deathgrip was new to me and it looks great! Nice to hear from someone who is as optimistic as me about the future of the genre :)
Pacer is a tough one for me. On the one hand there's a lot to like about it - I really enjoy the focus on skill/strategy over randomization with the weapon/tuning loadouts, but on the other hand some of the campaign and mode designs make absolutely no sense, such as Destruction mode still having cooldown timers on the weapon pickups meaning you can't even fire off a shot because everyone in front of you is hogging them at the start of the event. On PC, BallisticNG is the daddy IMO. It is WipEout in all but name, with a choice of both PS1 and post-PSP style physics, constant free and paid updates and full mod support. There is a metric ton of ships, tracks and new event types available for download. It is the ultimate AG sandbox and I can't recommend it enough.
I have started to appreciate Pacer more and more actually but the game is definitely not without its flaws. The campaign has some really boring events where you are forced to use a specific weapon but some races and especially the track design are of a really high standard. I’ve only gotten started in BallisticNG but I have definitely seen the potential in that game. Thank you for your comment!
Ok, that hasn't happen yet but in my defence, the video is more than a year old :) The developers are still active on Discord so I hope they have at least something cooking.
Is the Extreme-G series not considered AG Racing games. I'm just wondering because nobody talks about this old series in that context. Sure, the vehicles are futuristic motorbikes not hovering over the ground, but the track design is very similar. Anyhow, I would like to see a squeal to XGRA.
I excluded that series from this video because of the reasons you just said but now a couple of months later I it's perfectly clear to me that the Extreme-G games fit perfectly in the realm of AG racing. In my description I've written that I also cover "futuristic racing games" so I'm definitely thinking about making content about Extreme-G too :) Thank you for your comment!
@@Acetix No worries, one of my channels purposes is to highlight members of the community. If you click on my "about" page you'll find an email adress for business inquires. Please don't rush, just send an email if and when you want to showcase anything :)
You weren't wrong, but you had NO idea. :D Have you played XF yet? It's only on Steam. It's all over, F Zero can retire now. That game is INSANE!!! and it's only got a demo out at this point and time. This game is made by the creator that made Spark the Electric Jester, so you know this dev know his speed and precision. The game just oozer F Zero, but better.
I've had that game suggested to me before but thank you for reminding me. It looked very, similar to F-Zero, yes :) I'll make sure to try the game out when I can!
Im an indie developer trying to produce an anti gravity racer inspired from sodium 2 from playstation home. Hopefully I'll be able to master coding aspect soon as I already do animation/modeling.
I guess I excluded it since Grip in its core isn't a pure AG Racer. But considering that they added the hover vehicles as DLC it would have probably been worth mentioning the game. Thank you for your comment!
My only regret about choosing an Xbox over a Playstation was losing access to the Wipeout franchise. I hope that if the series is resurrected we can get a multi-platform release, which will help develop a healthy and competitive community.
I would not say no to a multi platform sequel. That would be an easier way to create more revenue for the title since more players could pick it up. I definitely agree with you as well, if they put some effort into an online mode, we could have a healthy competitive community for sure. Thank you for your comment!
WO:OC VR was my 2022 don't know why I waited so long to try the VR mode. Amazing! I am a better pilot in VR too. Took a while to adjust to motion sickness though but after a while it went away.
I have been thinking about getting the previous version of PSVR simply for using it to play WipeOut. I've gotten super dizzy every time I've tried VR out but the mode just looks so cool in Omega Collection. Thank you for commenting!
@@AGRacingCentral it is truly amazing. The sense of scale makes it a unique experience. Empire Climb gave me butterflies the first time. It feels right as well, all the pilots wear helmets and you'd imagine their gravity would be equalised inside the cockpit so is a natural medium/fit.
I can't remember the name of a game i saw on YT once, but i wonder: do you have any ideas of it? The game was a space racer, where first place drew the track behind where they went. First place had flight controls and could bend and twist the track however they pleased, even being risky and attempting to go close to environments to create hazards, or making swift turns twists and bends to mess with the people behind them. Last i remember, first place gets points for staying ahead. I don't remember if making someone behind them crash in the race counted too. I also remember seeing someone literally fly off the edge of the track because 1. They were closer to first place and had less time to see the track ahead, and 2. First place did a sudden downwards bend then twisted and turned left, suddenly sending the other player right off the edge. I really really want to remember this game, it was so unique and intense of a pvp racer.
Thank you for your question but unfortunately I can't seem to come to think of which game you mean. I hope you'll find out which game it was one day :)
I'm surprised I haven't heard of most of these games since I love futuristic racers. But it seems like most of them have mixed or only mostly positive reviews. Which is a shame, because despite there being a lot of AG games coming out now, it seems like they're mostly struggling to hit the mark or find success. And those that do actually land right (like GRIP, which was an absolute ball to play) are pretty much dead now. Besides Redout 1 and 2, it actually feels like the AG scene is struggling more than ever. I think I came out of this video feeling bleaker than when I went in lol. Thank you for the content though. I'll still keep my hopes up for something great on the horizon.
Well first off I'm sorry my video had the opposite effect on you than I hoped for :) I guess that racing games in general never really pushes themselves to the top of the selling charts and Metacritic scores with a few exceptions, it just is what it is. We would definitely need to see a new WipeOut or F-Zero for a true resurgence. In the meantime, there definitely still is a living community. Subreddits are active and I'm seeing other AG channels on RU-vid grow quickly. Thanks a lot for checking out the video and leaving a comment!
Those modes in Redout 2 are still "Coming soon". The online mode seems to be dead here on ps5. Do you know if the developers still plan on releasing those modes?
Thank you for your question. The game does get patched and updated now and then but as far as I know, nothing has been mentioned from the developers regarding the community content. I guess it's not really a good sign it has been saying "coming soon" for more than a year but we'll see what happens. And yes, it's hard to find opponents through matchmaking on PS5. What you can do is do join the games Discord server, there they organize online races every Saturday evening!
I dont know where else to ask, trying to find a game that we had, most likely on playstation. It was racing, where you could travel up walls and down the other side with out crashing, it was space like.
Thank you for your question but unfortunately I'm not quite sure which game you mean. I guess it was a long time ago and Playstation 1 had a lot of titles :)
I’d say it’s at least an indication that Nintendo is willing to do something with the IP so we should really keep our fingers crossed for a full blown sequel!
Well, the apparent success of F-Zero 99 might help bring AntiGrav back into the spotlight. I've always enjoyed the idea of a pseudo sim anti-grav game, like Assetto Corsa Competizione, but Wipeout. You'd have to speculate with much of the tech and physics, but that merely gives more room for manouvre as far as ensuring good gameplay.
That sounds like a really interesting idea and I'd play it for sure! Might be a bit too niche to warrant a development budget but who knows :) And I agree with you regarding F-Zero 99. It's perhaps not my personal favorite cup of tea but I'm really glad the game exists so we can get some more attention to AG Racing.
Considering the success Nintendo had reviving Metroid after such a long time, you'd think F-Zero would be worth at least a shot from them. But damn I'd kill for a new podracing game. One where you could construct your own custom pod would be incredible.
Hopefully we got a hint from Nintendo that they are not ready to dismiss the franchise when they recently released F-Zero 99. I'm relatively confident there is enough interest in the series for them to make a proper sequel.
Thanks for the tip! That game comes up a lot and hopefully it will turn out well once it leaves early access. The F-Zero spectrum of AG Racing is growing on me and F-Zero 99 was a really cool game. I also hope to be able to play F-Zero GX one day, or maybe even better, a fully fledged new title in the series :)
At 5:24 you mention that PS4 *and PS5* owners can enjoy the WipeOut Omega Collection. I've tried to install Omega Collection on my PS5 (from the online store) but it says it's not available. Can you please confirm whether Omega Collection is in fact playable on PS5? I would LOVE to play this series again (without picking up a PS4).
You asked a similar question in the comment section of another video which I replied to. Sometimes the RU-vid notifications doesn't really work or maybe something else went wrong but I'll post the reply here too! In an old Reddit thread people complained about the same issue you describe. It was speculated that the game was removed because of licensing issues with the music. Some of the solutions listed were: 1. Look for the game on a console rather than a computer. (This might be what you already did yourself). 2. If it says "Not available for purchase", click the "more" option and the option to purchase the game might appear. 3. In the "PS Plus" tab, see if the game is listed among the games available on the Premium Tier. Then subscribe to the Premium Tier (if you deem it's worth it). I hope one of these options will resolve the issue. You are more than welcome to reply again and tell me how things went, it's useful information for me.
@@AGRacingCentral thanks for the compressive reply! (I didn’t get a notification for the other comment) I will try some of these and let you know how I go, thanks again
Great questions and the very political answer is that they are different enough that you can play both of them. If I had to pick one, maybe Redout 2 is slightly more polished and has more content but if it's specifically an F-Zero-like game you're looking for, Fast RMX is the better choice.
I worry about Wipeout coming back. What can it do to add anything that isn't already being done? It needs to do something big to prove it is the king of AG.
I agree. The very pure racing experiences of old is probably not going to cut it in this day and age if they want the game to succeed outside the hard core scene. I think they were on the right track with Wipeout 2048 with its unlockables and different types of ship.
Had to look the game up and it looks fun! Really liked the far perspective that made the game look like a top down racer. I'm not really familiar with homebrew games for the Wii, how do you play the game?
It's niche game on a retro platform so you'd need a physical homebrewed Wii OR be savvy enough with emulators to set up "dolphin emu" on a computer. You might also want to check out "aero GPX" which is on PC.
I platted redout 1 and loved that game. 2 I kinda got stuck after I unlocked the cloud racetracks.... I dont know what it was but 2 felt so much more difficult.
People with a lot of experience in both titles pinpoint quite a few differences so it might just be that the first title suited you better for whatever reason.
Hey 👋 I'm a AAA game dev and I'm working on a ag racer game in my free time as a personal project I'm thinking about making a dev log video some time soon
That sounds very interesting, I would love to watch that! If you for any reason want to promote your game through my channel or do some other kind of collaboration surrounding it, don't hesitate to reach out. You'll find my email adress in my "about"-page.
That would be Pacer, a game known as Formula Fusion during development. It's available on all major gaming platforms and even though it's not up there on Wipeout level, I'd say it's a decent racing experience.
Not sure if it strictly qualifies as AG but hope Extreme-G (N64) makes a comeback or a new game with the same concept. You could pretend you were in one of those TRON bikes or Kaneda racing through the streets of Neo-Tokyo 😄
The Extreme-G games look like a lot of fun but I actually haven't had the opportunity to try any of them out. There is always emulators of course, but like you I'm hoping for a new game or a remaster. Thank you for your comment!
I just wish there were more concentration on believable physics and that the developers would stop being fascinated with telling us we're going "1000" kph. We're not. The scale is wrong. So: Believable speed and physics. Last, personally, I'm not really into weapons, so I'd say any game that offers weapons should also allow us to turn them off for pure racing.
It definitely sounds like the Redout games are something for you regarding your thoughts about weapons but perhaps not so much when it comes to believable physics :) Great angle to bring in the physics! I'm a high school science teacher myself so I have considered making a science oriented video about AG racing.
@@AGRacingCentral Would love to see a video about the physics... I think "realistic" physics would be an amazing goal for a game in this genre - obviously, the maglev properties would need some serious consideration/invention/rules, but regarding aerodynamics, and controls, maybe we'll get there. Add in damage for things like striking the other vehicles, ground & walls, and I think it would be a really compelling improvement...
Wipeout and F-Zero are very different games in my opinion, the cramped tracks and low speeds of Wipeout do not scratch the F-Zero GX itch at all for me.
I completely agree that they are different and some players are more drawn to either franchise or like them both equally. I'm sure you know about Fast RMX and Redout 2 which are games that may suit you. In case you haven't heard about them, you could also look into Aero GPX, XF Extreme Formula and Super Pilot among other titles. Thanks a lot for your comment!
Yes, they have been cryptic at best when talking about the game. They will be adding F-Zero for the GBA on Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass so that's always something :)
@@AGRacingCentral if Anti gravity racing stays on it's current course, maybe then Nintendo will be inclined to make a new F-Zero game cuz of the popularity and demand for the genre. That's what I'm hoping for.
@@AGRacingCentral the AI is really aggressive if you get too close to them, but it’s a fun game. You can do some cool stunts and there are some neat shortcuts. (one cool shortcut is using the boogiedrill move to smash through a clock tower)
I honestly hadn't heard about the game but I checked out som gameplay and it looked really cool! Is it technically an AG Racer though? :) I actually skipped mentioning Grip in this video since it wasn't a pure anti gravity racing game. Thanks a lot for the suggestion though, I have plans to look into older games in future videos.
Even though I do agree that the games you mentioned are the greatest titles we have available in the genre for sure, some other lower budget games might actually be worth putting some time into and you might even discover that some of them have their own identity. Thanks for your comment!
I totally missed out on the Extreme-G series but if I decide to not turn to emulators, I will try out Extreme-G 2 on my Steam Deck. Thanks for the tip!
Hai everyone, can someone pls, help me find a ag racing game. I had it on my pentium 4 back in 2000s, it had some shooting mechaniks, different power ups etc. There was a career mode, after each race you earned some money to buy stuff and vehicles. Ass i recall it the name was big like 5-10 letters, but, im not shure) Game was in full 3d, no sprites. Pls leave your thoughts in comments, i will remember the game only when I see it
Eh, Redout 2 was a disappointment after coming from and loving the first Redout. Environments somehow bounce between having too much going on and not enough, and there’s a weird difficulty issue where you’re either struggling to stay out of last or far ahead of everyone else. I just didn’t find it fun, which is sad because the original Redout is GOATed. I’m still waiting on and praying for an Xbox port of Ballistic NG
Redout 2 is a divisive game for sure so I'll leave your assessment without a comment :) However, I am of course also hoping for a console port of BallistiNG but unfortunately, they recently canceled the Switch version. The game does however run really well, even on an old non-gaming laptop!
I have to admit I had not heard about that game before. I looked it up and it looked like something that would have been super awesome during the N64 era! You can definitely tell a racing game is from the 90s when there's a track called "Bikini Island" :D
For sure, it was mentioned in the video! Since I made this video I have however familiarized myself with BNG much more so more content about the game is coming!
The biggest gripe i have with all these games exept f zero is the lack of opponents. Races with only 4-8 opponents gets boring imo. No matter if its on or offline.
I see how that can be a problem for you if you come from the F-Zero games where the opponents are plentiful. Pacer has 12 ships in each race but other than that, I guess it's mostly around 8 tops. We'll have to wait to see what games optimized for the newer hardwares can do :)
Redout 2 sucks in comparison to Redout 1, as a long time player of racing games I find redout 1 much more enjoyable than redout 2 especially since redout 2 doesn’t allow for classic controls that Redout 1 has built in, you cannot achieve the control scheme with the rebinds, also the game disrespects long time players of redout 1 by forcing you to play the tutorial, it is a step backwards and an insult
I honestly didn't spend enough hours with the first game to make a very thorough comparison. 34BigThings did of course improve among many things with the sequel (customization, more colorful art style and so on) but I guess it's impossible to please everyone and I perfectly understand that there are things you can feel are superior in the first game. I'm sorry you feel this way but thanks a lot for leaving a comment!
I agree in a sense that Wipeout still hasn't been dethroned as the greatest AG racing franchise of all time but after spending my time with some of the other titles that are available, I can safely say that quite a few offer both solid gameplay and their own distinct identity. You just need to know which ones are the good ones :)
Fast RMX is definitely worth checking out. It plays a lot more like F-Zero than WipeOut though. Not necessarily a bad thing but worth noting. WipeOut Omega Collection is obviously a great game but I'll let each individual decide if it's worth buying a new console for :) I recently bought BallisticNG and I too was overwhelmed by the amount of content!
