Best Aviation Headset Not the Most Expensive!?

I share my headsets and experiences while sitting in the back of my Mooney M20J. I show you my 4 headsets that I have accumulated over the years and share the pros and cons of each and reveal which is my favorite. It may surprise you that the best airplane headset is not the most expensive one!
In this video I share with you my four headsets including:
NAV-DATA ND-71 - $104 www.aircraftsp...
DAVID CLARK H10-13.4 - $337 www.aircraftsp...
QUIET TECHNOLOGIES HALO - $340 www.quiettechno...
BOSE A20 ANR HEADSET - $996 www.aircraftsp...
It may surprise you, but in my opinion, the most expensive headset may not be the best headset! Watch for my personal, super biased (based on my preference, not affiliation with any company or interest in headsets), real world opinion on these headsets and in general.
I also mention and compare to the Clarity Aloft headset which I do not own but tried at Oshkosh.
To sum it up, the best headset is best for the purpose. Being the most expensive or the most quiet headset is not always the best for the purpose. Being a student pilot, renter, or long distance cross country flier can have a different preference than the casual pilot owner flier. Follow along to learn which headset I think is best for each purpose and which headset any student pilot should be starting out with.

Sounds like I'll be going for the David Clarke headset. Just starting the journey towards my private pilot's license and I'll be hopping in and out of my cfi's rental plane a bunch. Next up be getting the Halo headset since I wear glasses

I have that exact David Clark headset. My CFI has the A20. I agree the volume on the DC is completely useless and it's always set to max. The radios are pretty much turned all the way up too. Every time my CFI has to turn her own headset WAY down to deal with my volume needs and I have to crank her on the intercom. Otherwise it is a VERY good headset for a student just starting out. It gets crammed into my flight bag (backpack) and continues to work like a boss even with the abuse I give it (it was dropped out of the aircraft and hit the ground from about 4 feet up and gave me zero complaint afterwards). A solid 8/10 headset, especially for the cost. I'll prolly upgrade to a Lightspeed Zulu or Bose A20 after my PPL is done as they are a bit on the noisy side for more frequent use. For now though, the DC is amazing and I highly recommend it to any student pilot.

My wife and I got the Halos too. They seem very delicate but super comfortable. I need to look into the molded earpieces . Love your videos!

Good review and great advice - first person (apart from my buddies) who I've seen be honest about the pros and cons of Bose. The David Clark DC One X's are great by all accounts too, not sure if they'd fit your criteria for a main/PIC headset though, or if they'd last as long as a standard DC set. I've also heard good things about the basic Pilot ANR sets too.

I use david clark one-x (good anr, comparable to bose a20), bose a20(good anr but poor quality) and david clark h10-76x ENC which are quietest of this three in loud turboprop, but battery last shorter than in a20 or one x.

Durability and comfort is what I learnt early on. After 2 or 3 hours wearing them, and also, how well do they block noise.

Mostly agree with this review, but the halo wouldn’t play nice with my old KMA 24 audio panel. I had to shout for it to pick up the mic. I tried turning up the squelch but to get it to pick up the halo out was constantly breaking squelch with the other headsets. Not to worry, they are in such high demand I sold it for what I paid for it. Looking forward to when I have a modern audio panel and can go back.

Hey Mike, watching your videos I was curious if you have a Halo but wasn't 100% sure up until now. I am looking into Halo myself but the website is kind of outdated and not so much informational. For example, no mention on the Bluetooth capabilities. Do you have any experience with Bluetooth? How does it work, do you need an extra Bluetooth module or anything else in order to pair your phone? Student pilot here, and I love the idea of having the phone linked in case of an emergency since it seems like a very good thing to have a cellphone availability. Not too many videos out there on the subject, and again, the website is kind of useless when it comes to details so if you have any additional comments it's greatly appreciated. Thanks and I hope we run into each other one day (maybe Oshkosh). Keep up the good work!

@Mooney201er 3 года назад
Mine doesn't do any bluetooth for sure and I'm not aware that other variants do either. I have bluetooth pairing with my phone from the audio panel, but I barely ever use it. Almost every airport I'm doing any serious IFR from has a tower, RCO, or Approach frequency to use. It's handy for getting an IFR clearance from an uncontrolled field with no communications, but I rarely fly hard IFR from those kinds of situations. In the air, you won't be talking on the phone. Neither have time nor does it work. Texting usually works like letting someone know you're delayed. It's possible to get external bluetooth modules but too big and too much clutter. Halo keeps things more compact and convenient. However, like I mentioned in the video I don't recommend it for student pilots and non-owners because it is less robust of a headset. David Clark is your best bet for now. Not too much money invested if you quit or downgrade it to a passenger headset when you're ready for a more expensive one for yourself. Can't go wrong with one of those.

It might be a very new addition, but I checked their site and there is a bluetooth option now.

Thanks for the video. Can you get maybe some condensation inside the plastic transparent tubes of the halo? Thanks
@Mooney201er
@Mooney201er 2 года назад
Not really. I was getting a little bit with the original "audio filters" inside. I contacted the maker and he said to just get rid of the filters and never had condensation since. Supposedly the audio is better with the filter but I never noticed any difference.

Actually it was from NJ to San Macros which is even longer cause it's all upwind. Took 11 hours in a 201 with Monroy tanks. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ygELNQMd1RY.html

Mike. Awesome info. I fly a Twin Otter on the side of my normal jet flying. I bought a Flightcom Denali 90ANR. It’s great for what it does and my application. Less then $400 vs a Bose that pushing $1k.

How do you compare the Denali to the UFQ?
@challenger604pilot
@challenger604pilot 3 года назад
@@FlyingJournalism I can’t compare between the 2 because I haven’t used the later. What I do find with the Denali is I think they are a little tight on the head and don’t have as much adjustability as other headsets. This might be a reason why they are cheaper. I’m also sure the ANR capability of other more expensive brands are better. But again for my application the Denali works just fine.

Ok please I need an answer. I’m mildly interested in headphones and from what is on the consumer market aviation headsets seem ridiculous. Like my crappy 30 dollar headset I could wear for hours and my 250 dollar AirPod pro 2s have anc. And sony sells over ear anc for about the same price. Why are these headsets the price they are when for example the Apple AirPod max is 500 and considered expensive. Literally WHAT makes these worth any price other than being aviation. EDIT: Apple is basically adding dnr to AirPods through software. WHY ARE THESE HEADSETS SO EXPENSIVE?!?!

Thanks for this real-life comparison. Like you, I like to hear--and am used to hearing--my airplane's noises in the background. Considering the halo as a primary after your review and keep the trusty DC's for the occasional passenger.

My biggest mistake in (on the ground) 20 years of flying was not purchasing my Bose A20 sooner. Comfort wins in my book, if budget can allow. In my experience I had a headache 90% less with bumpy flights with the A20.

Have to disagree with you about the sunglasses comment. The fault lies with the sunglasses, just go buy some Flying Eyes (LEWDIX for 10% off). They are super thin so they don't break ANR seals, fixed it for me with any headset.
