Back in January 2020 I tested the PH2.0, BT2.0, JST and XT30 battery connectors, but the GNB27 was still just a rumor and had not been released yet.
Many of you have been asking for new tests with the micro connector from GNB (Gaoneng) and I finally got my hands on some, so here you go!
If you are looking for a TLDR and are not already "heavily invested" in the BT2.0 connector, go straight to the GNB27 instead for your powerful 1S and 2S builds. Definitely watch both this and the first video though because there is a lot of valuable info and useful takeaways, depending on your use case.
Also please note that this kind of videos may be quick / short in length but they require a lot of hard work and time consuming processes in order to get done right. Lot of work was done in this video and it gonna help people to do right decisions. But fundamental mistake was made in method of testing. For example, you can measure the serial resistance of connector by passing constant current over pair of connectors: "+"Of PSU -> "+"Of female connector >> "+"Of male conn. (Male conn. should be shorted with solder or bridged with very short wire, to negate resistance of wire) "-"Of male conn. >> "-"Of female conn. -> constant load -> "-"Of PSU. By doing this, you can adjust current to desired level with constant load. And than measure voltage drop over female connector with millivoltmeter, calculate resistance = voltage drop / current flowing through circuit. Knowing resistance of the connector, you can calculate voltage drop on all possible powering voltages. Thanks for the video☺️

Thanks so much for this video, I own approx. 12 1-2s low draw whoops which all have the p.h.2 connectors that I’m switching over. I was originally thinking I of going with the b.t.2, but after watching this I believe the g.n.b27 is the way to go, especially my 1s Savage Bee, that one I believe will benefit much more with the gnb27 as opposed to the stock ph2.

Guys, I decided today that I will "reformat" everything with 1S from Bt2.0 (9 amps, 0,6 grams) to GNB27 (9 amps, 0,8 grams). The GNB27 is about 33% heavier than the BT2.0, but I think the connector is easier to grip with the fingers and safer and also easier to solder because the pin spacing is larger (about double). It is also easier to get on the market than the BT2.0. I feel very uncomfortable using the BT2.0, especially that maybe someday some battery in my storage bag bursts into flames, just because the pins are so close together and thus the soldered cables may build a short circuit because of mechanical and temperature stress of the plastic and wires... Too bad that I had bought the NEW VIFLY WhoopStor 6 Ports 1S Whoop Battery Storage Charger and Discharger BT2.0 and PH2.0 Compatible (New Version). But well I am an electronics engineer, and will either try to somehow get the GNB27 on the PCB, or I'll just tinker cable adapters that are only used for observed charging ... By the way, there is also a charging adapter from VIFL to connect 6x 1S GNB27 batteries to a XT60 charger... Only batteries with 1S GNB27 batteries are possibly rarer than with BT2.0 or PH2.0. But well you can easily change the plugs if you can solder... Of course, with a connector mod you will lose the warranty and the manufacturer's liability...
@muteFPV
@muteFPV Год назад
Unfortunately the downside of limited battery options with GNB27 connector is the added cost of replacing the connectors, when buying batteries with BT2.0 or other.. On the other hand you can reuse the connectors (as long as they are in good condition). I personally never worried about the BT2.0 shorting but the distance is small indeed.
@Sugalime3D_FPV
@Sugalime3D_FPV 11 месяцев назад
@@muteFPV It looks like GNB wants GNB A30 the new standard (compatible to BT2.0). And they stop producing GNB27. That's a bad development imo... Because the tiny pin spacing for cable soldering is too tiny imo means unsafe against shorts...

Wow cool video !!!! GNB27 is better than the BT2.0 !!!! The BT2.0 extrem little pin spacing is unsave and bad for DIY ! But a XT15 (which does not exist on market yet) would even be much better because of a larger pin spacing ! I was really interessted ion your video because i like to compare power connectors. I made a video why BT2.0 is very bad and why we need a XT15 and XT45.

Great video! Like the "un-muted" muteFPV videos and this one may be the most important of all for manufactures to watch to ELIMINATE THE PH2.0 CONNECTOR. I've seen the PH2.0 POG cause multiple problems that appear to be hardware related including fail safe on take off with a fully charged battery and harmonics in the video so severe a goggles DVR that works well normally doesn't record the signal you can see... before you can't see it and punch out making it worse trying to get a video signal or hear where it is to go LOS. Great video that deserves attention so battery manufactures making high C rated 1S HV Lipo batteries use the GNB27 connector now that GNB makes a proper 1S battery connector.

Thank you very much! I wish the GNB27 or BT2.0 became "standard" but I suspect that this requires licensing, which results in higher cost. We are heading the right direction, that is for sure. At least GNB has good batteries that accompany the GNB27 well, compared to BetaFPV that have been (at least for me and in the past) mediocre....

@@muteFPV Thank you... was stoked to see you finished showdown #2 with the GNB27 in it. Took awhile;-) I just ordered the new Flywoo Firefly Nano Baby quad at 20.4 grams using 40 mm props. They used a folded PH2.0 so I'll replace it with a GNB27 to use with the new 90C 10gram GNB 1S 380mAh battery and some older GNB 520 80C batteries on GNB27s. Fun to look at what people were flying in the back yard and raging about despite flight times under 2 min only 10 months ago when I posted regarding using the GNB27 connector on the Tiny Hawk. The progress is quite amazing despite the pandemic with Flywoo pushing forward. The Nano Baby is within a gram of being only two thirds the weight of the "tiny" Tiny Hawk and it's using a much better 40mm prop without the Tiny Hawk's body drag to slow it down. And since the Nano Baby's flight times being reported are so long it seems reasonable for playing around up close to drop another 4 or 5 grams by using a 10g (claimed, not here yet to weigh) 380mAh 90C pack. 5.1 grams is 25% of the Nano Baby's 20.4g base weight so dropping 5g using a smaller but higher C rated battery is substantial and should feel great with the proper tune and still provide reasonable flight times. At least that's the plan... see if it matches reality when it gets here;-)

Let me know how it goes, I agree with lowering the weight, it makes a huge difference (especially in micros). I would have completed the showdown earlier but was told that GNB was changing stuff compared to the connector released at first. No idea if it had to do with review samples (never had any) or first production batches (didn't buy any of the very first). But I had decided to wait, just to be sure.
@JohnFHendry
@JohnFHendry 2 года назад
@@muteFPV Wow lucky me and thanks again! I was kidding when I said the 2nd showdown testing "took a while", but glad I said it because I ordered the first version of GNB27's AND THEY ARE NOT COMPATIBLE with the second version! Your reply made me wait for the new GNB 380 90C 1S batteries to arrive and see what you were referring to and stopped me from spending hours/days to finish converting everything 1S HV High C with PH2.0 to GNB27 including soldering up eight 14AWG GNB27 charge leads and modifying some HV multi-port chargers with PH2.0 outputs to be ready for 1S when Flywoo's Baby Nano gets here... but now I need version 2 GNB27's...err! GNB changed the design and reversed which bullet side expands and compresses. 2nd version has the male bullet cut down the middle so it can compress going in solid female bullet so the ver 1 female solid bullet will not fit inside ver 2 GNB male on new GNB 1S batteries. Fortunately this change happened almost immediately so not an issue unless you ordered some of the very first ones.

This was great, thanks. Do you know if GNB27 connectors you tested were v1 or v2? I am not sure when exactly v2 came out, but it seems to have slightly beefed up pins (so it’s not exactly backwards compatible, as if user adoption of it wasn’t bad enough) so might be a bit better than the old one if it doesn’t add even more weight. I agree with your conclusions-if I was starting out today I might lean towards GNB27, but with everything on BT2.0 already, it doesn’t seem to be worth the hassle. And my builds are so weight-conscious that 0.2g extra weight might even offset any benefit 😅

@ignasanchezl 11 месяцев назад
Oh there is a few 2s batteries that are sold without a main lead just a balance connector, that is what I was thinking about, doing this while still having a main lead is pointless. You do need a special charging cable for most chargers btw. To be honest it's hard to recommend, for batteries that are not designed with it in mind, but many batteries use 22AWG which is plenty for builds where you're trying to save insane amounts of weight. 10A might be too much but 5A is probably OK. I have only done this with 2s LifFePo4 airplane receiver batteries but I was planning on using it for some indoor aircraft with 6A ESC.

They become very loose after only a small number of dis/connect. Never had that with BT2. Always firm and snug. And ALL my "free" GNB27 pigtails that were included with Gaoneng batteries are COMPLETE JUNK. They are such a loose fit that they almost come loose by themselves. We have a new one on market: BT3.0 connector. Which is in competition with XT30 for tiny 2S whoops... One advantage is that it does not need a balancer. But as you can see in a video of mine is that XT batteries without balancer cable exist.... And what strikes me again on BT3.0, as with the BT2.0, is the very small pin spacing. So I can't support that again because imo that is dangerous ! I still hope that we get an AMASS XT7 connector for tiny 1S drones. Which in itself is basically just a downscaling of an XT30. Just take Photoshop and shrink an XT30 connector so that it has the pin diameter like BT2.0 pins, then you will see that the PIN spacing of the BT2.0 is a joke...

Just measured GNB27 DC Resistance (DCR meter with microΩ resolution and proper Kelvin leads). Single contact pair: 2 mΩ. So the total voltage drop on two pair of contacts will be only 4 mV / 1A load. According to your plots it is 10 times higher 40-50 mV / 1A. You are measuring total voltage drop on connectors + leads. Also I have measured old Micro T connectors, they are only 1 mΩ (per contact pair). Not as compact though. For comparasing, big XT90 are 0.2 mΩ. XT60 are 0.25 mΩ. Note on the BT2.0: they are small overall, but 4.5mm thick compared to just 3mm GNB27.

I love this kind of tests. Numbers doesn't lie. XT30 connector indeed is much more suited for 2S to 4S up to 3" quads and small planes/wings. For 1S+1S battery configuration in whoops GNB27 is slightly better than BT2.0. BUT as you said - battery availability in particular region determine final choice. I moved from PH2.0 to BT2.0 because in Europe BT2.0 batteries are much more available with faster delivery time than batteries with GNB27 connector. Also BT2.0 is rock solid and can withstand many coupling/decoupling cycles easy. Read about GNB27 as not so resilient in that.

Why does it make a difference between 1s and 2s @ same current?
@muteFPV
@muteFPV Год назад
Hello! Because the wattage passing through the connector is more. Watts = Volts x Amps, so as a simplified example if 1S is 4 volts and 2S is 8 volts, for the same current of 5 Amps you would have 4x5=20Watts for 1S and 8x5=40Watts for 2S passing through the connector.

Hi! I'm a little bit surprised with your conclusion. I have a tinyhawk freestyle 2. And I have observed a lot of sag during full throttle and dynamic flight. I have converted my th2 to xt30 and all my 1s to 2s xt30 (then it's the same batteries) And really less sag and better battery life. For instance with ph2.0 on second full throttle punch I have battery low warning, and with xt30 I can do up to 15-20 full throttle punch before one battery low warning. It really transform my th2 :).
@muteFPV
@muteFPV 2 года назад
I have been perfectly happy with the BT2.0 on my TH2. I decided to use this instead of the XT30 just to keep the weight down. Very big difference compared to the PH2.0 (especially the crimped version)
@J2_P
@J2_P 2 года назад
@@muteFPV yes ph2.0 is lighter than xt30. But on th2 side you replace 2 ph2 and one pcb (0.97g) by one xt30 (1g). Same weight. And on battery side you replace 2 ph2 by one xt 30 and one balance plug (only one wire to be light as possible). Probably 1-2g lost. Not really significant for the th2 :).

I have both connectors GNB27 and BT2.0 and i don't think the GNB27 is easy to handle because is very difficult and hard to unplug in comparaison with the BT2.0. So i prefer to stay with BT2.0 for Tinywhoop.

I bought GNB27 plugs for €45. To change all my 1S batteries from BT2.0 to GNB27. I was repacking them today when I read your post. And yes, I was shocked when I experienced the same thing. But then I realized that there are some that are easy and others that are difficult. Maybe it's a quality problem and only 50% of the connectors are usable. What I also noticed is that if you take 2 pairs of pliers and plug the plugs in and out 10-30 times, the posture decreases and it becomes easier the more often you plug in and out. So I keep changing everything to GNB27 because I think the BT2.0 is a bad design, firstly the pins are way too close together which I think is dangerous for short circuits and 2) you can't grab it well or you need this kind of hat for the battery with hot glue 3) it is only supported by one company, and other competitive brands (Happymodel, ...) try to avoid the plug...
@leetm4chine

Isn't it a bit questionable if this will make any real-world difference? The biggest difference between XT30 and GNB27 is 8,014V−7,970V = 0,044V. While the relative difference in voltage drop is significant, the absolute difference is negligible. Great testing and methodology though! I am just a bit puzzled by the conclusion.
@muteFPV
@muteFPV 2 года назад
If you check my first round of comparisons, the PH2.0 vs BT2.0 difference is small too, but in the air during actual flying the difference is massive. My test setup is fed by a beefy power supply and the overall wiring is too lossy compared to an actual quadcopter setup where the wires are short and the battery is just a few cm away from the ESC. I strongly believe that the difference is actually significantly bigger in a real world scenario.

Thank you for the feedback! GNB will definitely be more competitively priced for their own batteries with their own connector. @@muteFPV I compared the BetaFPV PH2.0 450 mah 1S against the GNB 650 maH batteries. First off, the pricing is $30 (BetaFPV) vs $18 (GNB) for a set of four. The GNB weights about 3 g more but has longer flight time (about 30 - 40 sec). The most important point is that the BetaFPV battery voltage sags big time when it reaches below 3.1V. The GNB batteries did much better and the voltage did not drop like a rock when it reached 3.1V
