I have an aquarium that lost all it's fish (bought a sick fish and it nuked the tank).... I figured I'd wait before replacing the fish since I'd need to empty it and clean it. Needless to say - without fish (6 weeks) - all of the plants have started to suffer already. DEFINITELY need the fish.

@FatherFish As a person that really doesn't like the heavily planted look am going to try to attempt a planted tank. I have a 36 gallon tank. I'm thinking maybe 5 java ferns and 5 Asian Water Ferns. Inwanted to do a dirt bottom but then I found out that these ferns are not supposed to be rooted in the subtrate. So should I still use dirt or just do sand?

I'm from tropics in India. I did this in a 40 gallon outdoor container with rapid growing plants like coontail, Guppy grass, water poppy, bacopa, valisneria, aponogeton, duckweed. Day 70 or so. Literally, there are hundred guppies and two dozen platies. I released just a trio of each species. Malaysian and pond Snails, daphnia, infusoria, mosquito larvae, blood worms.. there is so much life and diversity. Kept fish in dead tanks with rocks and plastic plants and I always experience a diminished curve of fish numbers. Now, I have a flourishing nature in my cobtainer. Thank you Father fish.

I have heavily planted shrimp tank. No filter no heater never vacuum the bottom. The only time I am scared it will all die is when I have to cut plants back at which time I also change 20 to 30% of water. I adjust my feeding based on snails, if the number of snails is growing I feed less and vice versa. I usually tend to it every 6 months now.

@DuneDemon8
@DuneDemon8 8 месяцев назад
@@brandens7615 I change 20 to 30% of water every month or month and a half because this is when I also cut plants. I do this for 2 reasons, cutting down plants probably leeches juices in to water, there are loose leaves of plant debris I want to suck out, and I guess remaining plants might not be enough to get all the nutrients out of water so just in case. I let it grow a lot and cut down also a lot.

I'd add, if you're in a heavy agricultural area, go far away to get your pond muck. I have a local pond, but live in an area that was avocado and citrus groves for years. Years of heavy chemical fertilization and back in the day, the groves used their used motor oil to keep dust down on the roads! And these were pretty much quasi organic groves, they didn't spray pesticides but did use synthetic ferts. You don't want that pond muck! Tldr; know that the muck you're getting isn't on the side of the road, near construction or ag areas, that it's clean muck. ✌️

Ima be honest here I have a farm and there are 3 other neighboring farms and the pond from all the fertilizer and loose seed that gets taken by the rain the creeks tha attach to the ponds on my property have tons of the best veggies I’ve had and the pond just grow insanely well

@laurabustos6560 Год назад
@@damianolsen6763 obviously veggies we eat will taste good, even with, or especially with water that has a lot of fertilizer run off. I'm just saying it's not super safe for fish and shrimp. I eat my veggies, grow organic and even feed my veggies to my shrimp and snails, but I sure wouldn't use the pond muck for a base for a tank. I also know there have been ppl fishing in our pond for years, but they catch and release. They wouldn't eat the fish.

@@laurabustos6560 well no these thing at like some freaks of nature things we planted a potato plant on the creek and grew massive but then we took a potato from the plant and grew it in the green house and garden and grew regular size same with green Beans and radishes the green beans look like they where on the plant for 3months even if they where planted there a month ago the plants grow extremely fast on the creek too considering the oak tree that has a tire swing in it grow about an inch to two wider a year and its because the micro life the fish and the fertilizer all at once make the best growing plants because all of them together get them the nutrients and I’m saying the waters safe because it’s also a small native brook trout stream and they grow very healthy

I don’t think it’s always good but I’ve gotten lazy at times and because I have lots of plants my tanks give me lots of grace and never issues. Although I did let some floating plants go wild and eventually my cichlids we gasping and I had to remove the plants. Needed more swimming room anyways. Good advice and it works!

I love fish!! So much! I’ve tried in the past and failed miserably. You make me have hope that if I tried again I could be successful. I’ve subscribed and will implement all your suggestions. 🤞🏻Wish me luck.

He’s 100% correct been keeping aquariums 40 years now you can’t beat some good old dirty ditch much to cycle your tank properly.

I had a ten with hundreds of guppies. A beta. A snail, some plants, a under gravel filter, and air.

Loaches are a great starter fish. Fun to watch and will help propagate your plants for you.

Depends on the species though Clown loaches get *big* and may uproot plants, for example

@@garg4531 my loaches got very big and breed. Part of tank maintainence was using rocks to lodge plants deep. Dojo and kuhli together. My tank was very large with a small heater at one end so it created two zones.

This sounds so right. Just think ponds or lakes have living things in it without any maintenance being done to them. So making a fish tank the same way should work just as well.
