This is both test of the best bismuth shells on the market and a review of the new Carlsons Bismuth Bone Buster Choke tube. I pattern tested BOSS, KENT, HEVI-Shot, and Winchester's bismuth loads at 40 yards. These make up the majority of the bismuth waterfowl hunting loads on the market. I also shared some ballistics gel test data from other experiments along with some recoil and price data. The best performing shells were not necessarily the best all-around choice.

In this video I test:
• HEVI-Shot Bismuth #4 shot, 3", 1.375 oz (232 pellets), 1450 FPS
• KENT Bismuth #4 shot, 3", 1.375 oz (232 pellets), 1450 FPS
• Winchester (Tin Plated Bismuth) #4 shot, 3", 1.375oz (213 pellets), 1450 FPS
• BOSS (Copper Plated Bismuth) #4 shot, 3", 1.375 oz (232 pellets), 1350 FPS
This experiment was done at a certified local shooting range with high quality ear and eye protection. It used 10% FBI Ballistics Gel. The higher velocity shells produced significantly more recoil and had more pellet fragmentation. I tried to control for this variable as best I could. Needless to say, all of these ammo choices would be very effective for duck or goose hunting.

I hand load some bismuth for waterfowl hunting. I use a lot of Tom Roster’s load data. He recommends nothing over 1300fps. If you know about Tom, you know the amount of time and research he has put into his load data. I’m a boss guy if I buy it, but I do like heavy shot’s hevi12 for my 20ga. It’s an 1.25oz load going the magical 1350fps. It literally turns the 20ga into a 12ga gun that shoots steel. I will say that the boss 4 shot 20ga loads are deadly!
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
The HEVI 12's are impressive. I have some test videos coming soon. If not for the cost, they would likely dominate the market. I think BOSS has the ideal pattern for regular waterfowl hunting, but if I were jump hunting, I wouldn't hesitate to use the tighter patterning Kent or Win, that is perfect for those long range applications.
@babaktaherian
@babaktaherian Год назад
@@TheNewHuntersGuide I was going to suggest that. There is very little information about HEVI 12 out there that can be TRUSTED. I do not know if that is possible to test but honestly I have been hesitant to buy not only for the price but because I am not sure if that load would damage the barrel or not.
@babaktaherian
@babaktaherian Год назад
@Joshua Lowe I have no doubt that HEVI, being the manufacturer would claim that they are safe for any steel rated barrel. However, is it really okay to use? I’m not sure if there is a way to test for that except the gun manufacturers using thousands of rounds. I even doubt HEVI employees did such testings
@grousedog88

You should see if you can find the shot cups for each. I always liked Kent and federal for their price and because they use “medium range” semi closed shot cups where Winchester and Remington generally used banana peels that pop open/release the shot instantly. This might answer part of the question of the pattern densities. I feel like people always forget how much shot cups matter. Just look at black cloud. Shot cup never opens but decelerates and falls away and the patterns that they produce are crazy at long range.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
Great point. I do not doubt that BOSS could make small changes and have a regular range hunting load, which is essentially what they have now, and then a long range hunting load, using a different shotcup like Win and Kent. But that would utterly confuse most people. BOSS's pattern is better for hunting at regular ranges. The other two are just too tight for 20-30 yard shots. You would have to use less choke and even then might be too tight. I am going to do a video to dig into that subject specifically.
@kross1261
@kross1261 Год назад
Another good video. Boss is bound to be cheaper selling factory direct. It will be interesting to see what the shells cost when supply and demand is eventually back to normal. Also the faster velocity will hit harder it’s simple physics. But like you showed the added velocity isn’t worth the extra recoil. Like to see the boss pattern like the Winchester though.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
Yea, I wish we had a normal market. The fluctuations in cost and supply are just ruining things. I do think the Kent and the Win are too tight for normal range hunting, you'd want to use a choke that is more open than what I was using here. I think 70% at 40 yards is ideal, unless you are shooting birds off the water, then 90% is very nice.

Another informative video. I can't remember if already asked so if I repeat myself I apologize. But I have learned loading my own buckshot how much variance there is from manufacturer to manufacturer on pellet size. Trust me, not all shells labeled 00 have the same size pellets in them. Just wondering if you have put a set of calipers to pellets from each companies #4 to check actual size? It would be interesting especially when you have some plated and some nonplated. I know the overall difference would seem small but as small as those pellets are when you look at % it could make a difference.

If my grandfather was still here he would tell me if you aren't killing birds. Slow down and practice more. I now use the cheapest steel on decoying birds . Usually 2 shot. I have tried boss. Could you cut apart one of each shell and go over any differences in designs? I recently watched a video of a guy going over a Boss shell and describing how much smaller the wad was and how that could affect your barrel over time. He said a large percent of the bbs were not able to fit within the wad because it was so short. Thanks
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
That is a good idea. But it's not that easy to cut open shells and preserve everything in them for discussion, I've tried. I will see if I can do some more of it. To that specific concern, bismuth is safe on all barrels, just like lead. It is malleable and doesn't mare like steel. Even if the BOSS is contacting the barrel, it's fine. And then the copper plating just helps that much more.

So have you found the bismuth bone buster to be the best choke for bismuth shot? Even compared the chokes with tighter constrictions?
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
The Carlson's Sporting Clays Extra Full tends to pattern a little bit tighter for me. But at this point tighter is not better really. Most of these patterns are too tight for hunting at regular ranges of 25-30 yards. 70% at 40 yards is ideal since that is max range and most shots should be closer. Really you should use less choke much of the time. I am going to put out a video drilling down on that very subject.
@btstrohfus

Im curious how much velocity each shell loses when the ambient temp drops to around freezing. For us who live in the Midwest and norther states, this could be a big factor. Not sure if there is any was to chill the shells and chronograph the difference in speeds vs current temps. Thanks again.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
The temp effects both the muzzle velocity and velocity at range due to air density. You'd need a good Chronograph for this. I'd need to get ahold of one. I do know that some companies like BOSS give their velocity rating at 40 degrees to account for that, they are actually faster at 70 degrees, to some extent.
@saltcreekammo

@@TheNewHuntersGuide awesome thanks man! So I’ve been researching most of the day on choke tubes and am curious about my extended “factory” choke that came with my maxus 2 wicked wing. It seems VERY similar to the Carlsons bismuth bone buster extended range as far as the full choke goes. I haven’t looked into the midrange yet, but the constriction at .705 and the parallel length seem very similar. I will get estimated measurements and see if I really need to spend the money on a choke that may be almost the same as what I have
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
@@leeroywilly Unfortunately the bottom line is really that the measurements only mean so much. It's really more a matter of how that choke resonates with your gun and load. Your stock choke could give you the best performance. And then an aftermarket choke could give you better performance with a little less constriction. What kinds of patterns are you getting with the factory choke? If they are reasonably good, that may be all you need. I am a big fan of the Bismuth Bone Buster, but I have 2 other chokes that give me almost the same pattern, I like this one because its a nice middle ground for a long-range choke. Some are just too tight.
@leeroywilly
@leeroywilly Год назад
@@TheNewHuntersGuide good point! I actually just got done testing patterns on paper. Unfortunately I do not have a bismuth bone buster to compare it with, but the extended full that came with my wicked wing seems to pattern very well with a pretty consistent pattern. I was pretty hyped about pattern master but with my code black duck I see quite a bit of fragmented bismuth. Even was able to pluck a piece out of this paper at 40 yards, however still a good pattern. I do still want a bismuth bone buster to try out, but I feel I am getting satisfactory patters and density with my extended factory full. Which sucks because I love accessorizing lol
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
@@leeroywilly Haha, well if you have a good pattern, I would save the money for ammo and sporting clays practice. You can always test more chokes in the off season. But if you have a good combo now, I think you'd gain more by practicing than getting more chokes. Once the season arrives its best to commit to one choke and get used to it.
