Libraries also have sales in order to make space for newly donated books. Those sales are often very good and have wonderful translations available...for $2-5 typically. 🥰📚 Thrift dhops are greathrift but estate sales and garage sales also sell books at very reasonable prices often in "like new condition"

my top three of the year; 1. frankenstein (my new favorite book, the number one on this list and in my heart, absolutely beautiful and infinitely discussable) 2. the poet x (elizabeth acevedo became one of my favorite writers this year, her prose just spirits me away and dives deep into my soul, it's gut wrenching, emotional and so genuine) 3. this is how you lose the time war (just wow, so weird and so good, and oof what an audiobook) with an honourable mention to "if not, winter" which i read upon your recommendation and was truly blown away from! it festered in some deep part of my brain.. and a shout out to jane austen, whose books i devoured and were a much needed escape (especially sense & sensibility) and lastly, thank you for your videos this year.. you have been a source of calmness and peace in the storm that has become our daily lives! see you next year x

Your videos have been such a comfort this year. I'm so glad you loved The Picture of Dorian Gray and Beloved! I am a massive Oscar Wilde fan, and I can't wait to read even more by him this year. Also, Toni Morrison was such a talented author! I should perhaps reread Beloved. It was my first Toni Morrison book as well and it's been years since I read it. If you're looking for more Toni Morrison I highly recommend The Bluest Eye next. The way the main character internalizes a standard of beauty that she can never achieve is poignant and heartbreaking. It's such a powerful read. Happy New Year! Here's to a great 2021!

Re: Drive Your Plow Over The Bones of the Dead - I'll have to add this to my TBR list based on your recommendation..... It's sad that even with the classics' more famous passages 'about' animal suffering, like Raskolnikov's dream in Crime & Punishment - where he's horrified by the horse being whipped, you still get the sense as a reader that it's a religious metaphor or mainly intented only as a commentary on how people mistreat each other. Then along these lines there are films like Au Hazard Balthazar by Bresson and The Rules of the Game by Renoir (countless others) in which *real animals* (i.e. in the film's production) are literally enlisted as sacrifices to this kind of poetic device. It's a glaring blindspot that's rarely remarked on.

What a fantastic video. Thank you for this. Nowadays I'm rarely shaken/stirred/inspired by what I read, so it's wonderful to see (to remember) the power that language and imagination, wielded by one mind, can have over another. Your responses are so affecting. And such an eclectic list! A glorious celebration of the ability of books to help us find new depths in ourselves. My top three books of this year were 1. Wives and Daughters (Gaskell) 2. Little Women (Alcott) - proving that classics are classics for a reason; this was the first time I'd read either - and 3. Born With Teeth (audiobook), Kate Mulgrew's autobiography, read by the author herself, another instance (to add to your examples) where reading from the page would certainly not have been the same experience. Thanks again for this lovely three-quarters of an hour.

It helps me to gain a broader perspective when it comes to literature and shows that although 95% of booktubers like to read their American YA-stuff that you are one of the few 5% who isn't going to constantly talk about Sarah J. my favourite book of the year and the one that influenced me the most was The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I read it at a time where i was really not doing well and it made me remember why i love stories so much and that life is okay with stories in it. It made me feel the type of wonder and magic I used to feel when reading fantasy as a child and in short it was a beautiful journey with many layers and i can't wait to read it again many times even though I believe it was most important in the fact that it gave me hope at a time when I wasn't at my most hopeful. other favourites were the bone clocks by david mitchell, spring by ali smith and before the devil breaks you by libba bray.

Such a wonderful video. I admire how well you articulate your feelings about these books and describe them. My favourite book from 2020 was Devotions by Mary Oliver, which is a collections of poems, that really healed me and helped me get through the year.

Excellent year review! I feel for you and this year of hardship. I like you had a similar year two years ago and it was hard and books saved me as well. My favorites this year were The Spy and the Traitor, Lost Spells and Dolly Parton’s Storyteller (recommend audio as she tells her story). I wish for you a better year and keep the reviews coming!

I find myself opening up to so many of your suggestions just from your description. I’ve never read Manga but I think Sailor Moon is a comfort I need! What influences your book choices? Very happy that your videos are a generally juicy length so thank you especially for this past year 💜

So now I know what books I have to be adding to my 2021 reading list! Happy new year, Emmie, I'm so thrilled that I'm able to watch your videos and absolutely delight in every single one of them. I absolutely adore ALL your content and I wish I had found you sooner! My top three books of the year were probably (watch as I struggle to decide and I only read 27): Burn by Patrick Ness, Violet to Vita (The Letters of Violet Trefusis to Vita Sackville-West), and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

I have One Hundred Years of Solitude just sitting in my bookshelf, seeing the way you talk about it makes me really want to get through it finally. It´s am important piece of literature here in Mexico, so I´m scared of reading it! Anyway, while you´re in this Márquez vibe, I recommend Chronicles of a Death Foretold. It´s basically about a man who is going to be killed, and the entire town knows about it but him. It is quite short, no more than a hundred pages but it´s beautiful. I loved it! And if you´re into the magical realism, try Julio Cortázar or José Saramago.

I cried when you thanked everyone who writes and records and thinks of books. I have a painful nerve injury in my hands which started last August. I've had to give up my dreams of becoming a composer as I couldn't write, or play any instruments. I can't hold a book for too long because it hurts my hands/fingers, so I've listened to so many audiobooks!! Can't wait to get better, and hopefully not deal with this pain anymore. Wishing you a good recovery as well!
