Neewer continues their 660 LED Panel series with a RGB Bi-Color panel. Coming in at a very budget price point of $130, you get a very capable and powerful LED light for your filmmaking needs. What's more is that at nearly half the price, the Neewer RGB 660 is more powerful than the GVM 50rs. If you've been looking for a budget LED kit, definitely consider starting with the 660 series of LED's by Neewer.

Oh man! I just ordered 3 of the Neewer 660 bi-colour LEDs since I managed to get 3 for the price of 2 on a Black Friday deal, but for the last couple of days I've wondered whether or not I should return them and instead get 2 and replace one with the RGB panel instead. Then I stumbled across your video and I wish I made this decision a few days ago, because the prices have all gone back up! Ah, the joys of shopping for gear and having serious FOMO from watching too many gear reviews 😅
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey Usman! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Aw man! Definitely FOMO and gear review videos. Heres what I gotta say. When you bought the bi-color kit, you didn't hesitate, you knew what you were gonna do with that set. The RGB was only an after thought of "that would nice". So honestly, don't worry about it, you can do basic "color" contrast with just a bi-color set. Set your keylight to tungsten and your back light to daylight, but WB for tungsten and your back light will look super blue. Reverse that idea and you'll get a super warm background. This basic idea does a lot as RGB is just fun to use here and there. Of course I'm using it for my videos to differentiate between a "review" video versus a "learning" video. But otherwise a bi-color is more than enough. I talk about this a lot in my "think critically series" that you can check out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3zO9axytfK8.html TLDR; don't buy due to "what if" only buy whats going to solve 90% of your problems. If you buy for a bunch of "what if's" you'll be wasting more money in the long run. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

So I just want to thank you so much for having all these videos. Without you there’s nobody making videos about these lights or other equipment. It helps a ton and Iv subscribed. I’ll be picking up the kit of 2 530 rgb’s. I really wanted to take your advice and get the 660’s but amazon has been a mess lately and pricing keeps raising up not to mention its taking forever to get things shipped. So I’ll take a hit and lose a little bit of power to snag these guys. This will be my first lighting kit and I know you recommended the 660’s bi colors but I’d pay the exact same and wouldn’t actually get a carry bag and no remote. For the same price as these 530 rgb’s. So I’ll take features and accessories over output. Hopefully I’m making the right call. I wish you had a review on the viltrox vl-200t I wanted to get those lights but there just wasn’t enough reviews to make me feel comfortable in spending the $160 for 2 lights.

Hey hey FallingFrom Solace! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I'm glad this video was helpful for you! While I haven't gotten a chance to review the VL-200t, based on looking at it's design. It looks like you won't be able to remove the plastic diffusion cover, so you may be limited in terms of what you can do if you would like to have more output without the cover. The barn doors on the Neewer are handy to somewhat cut the light or clip on diffusion paper to diffuse the bare LED if you remove the cover (my preferred method of diffusion) Hope this helps and have fun with your new lights! TLDR Filmmaker Hey man! Thank you so much for taking the time to not only read and reply to my message but to look up the product I asked you about. I think I made the right choice going neewer these two will be my key and fill lights so the more power the better. Plus RGB and the app made it an easy decision for an extra $70 bucks over the Vl-200. I do want to buy a 3rd light but I was hoping to go more portable. Originally I was thinking the viltrox RB-08. Because of the small price tag. But after your review on the falcon eyes f7 I’m just so confused on what route to go. I’m also debating on the aputure MC. Seems kinda in the middle of the two. Any advice you could give on the matter would be very appreciated.

You're most welcome! In terms of pocket RGBs, they are definitely a handy tool and I've only reviewed 3 and decided that was enough and probably won't review any more of them unless they actually show me something interesting. For the most part I still love the Boling P1 because of its integrated mounting arm. I've found myself reaching for that more than the others because of how fast I can set it up and angle it where I want it to go without extra items. It may not be the brightest of the bunch, but for me its quick to use right away with just a stand with a 1/4 - 20 screw on the top. No need for ballheads etc.

I Wanted to make sure people knew that there was a 660 version and to let people know that the results they are seeing is the 530, but they can expect an output bump with the 660. Hope that makes sense. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

You're welcome Conrad! I was definitely surprised comparing the medium sized 530 against the GVM and still winning out in RGB mode. I have to say these Neewer 660's (series) are a great value, pair that up with the small and powerful Sokani X60 (with hopefully a new ver2 with a better fan) it would be a nice small setup of decently powerful lights for most filming situations that doesn't require a 5k HMI. Excited to see what 2020 will bring in the form of budget light kits!

I emailed them a few months ago about this light and not having a remote, only being phone controllable, told them I wouldn't consider it till they had a hard remote. Smaller companies who make hard products should stay away from software, stick to what you are good at. I can't rely on neewer to update their app to every phone and every version from now until the end of time, its insurance, making an app implies trust between the customer and seller that they *will* in fact be around for a while and take care if you, it takes time to build that trust. I have there bi-color 480's love them.

Hey hey again ian! You bring up a great point about App support for the future as mobile devices keep getting updated. Hopefully they keep up with it as they allow other Neewer Lights to hook up to the app. But I guess time will tell. However in my experience so far on small independent film set, I've never really used the wireless remote or apps. Mainly because when we setup before the actors come in, I've already dialed in everything based on experience with the lights and what they are able to do. I'm sure when I work my way up to bigger sets, the wireless app or remote will be more useful to me then.

I’ve purchased one of these lights.. you’re review on the whole I thought was good. However, you’ve made glaring omission when you spoke about the diffuser. The light without the diffuser and with the barn doors used to block off light to a scene produces a very strange stepped border - in other words if one wants to create a ‘hard edged light’ YOU CAN’T! This could have been an error in my judgement of LED panel lights - maybe they are all similar? But since it came with a diffuser I thought without it would have given me that line between shadow a light! To conclude, I’d say if that’s not what you’re looking and these lights prove their durability, they represent good value for money.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 4 года назад
Hey hey again FC WHAT! I did speak about the multi-shadow briefly in the beginning in regards of what the diffusion cover does. One thing with LED panels with barn doors is that it doesn't really create a hard cut of light because the barn doors are simply too close and too small to do it. They really only can sort of keep light from spilling in a direction, but barn doors attached to a LED panel will never truly cut it. Now if you are using the doors to slightly cut and you want to eliminate the diffusion panel for more output, but want to lessen the "stepping shadows" that the barn doors create. What I would do is set the barn doors to where you need it, and then simply clip on some diffusion paper at the opening. This will eliminate the stepping shadow while sort of keeping the light where you had "cut" it. For people that really want to be able to cut light, you need a COB style LED where it mimics a single source. This will do much better, but not necessarily give a hard hard cut, for that you will need some sort of focusing fresnel with barn doors in front. Hope this helps!

Just wondering why there's so many videos on the other models, and not this one. I'll be using it as mixed lighting with my strobes, and like the fact that I can add a splash of color without gels. Hey hey Robert! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! You're most welcome! Yes this RGB panel is pretty new when I reviewed it. @TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 4 года назад
Hey hey MGDrumCovers! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Unfortunately I do not know the exact different in brightness between the three models. It'll also depend on how you plan to setup your shot as well. With these LED panels, its generally best to start in a room thats very dark. If you are planning to use these with natural light bouncing around in the room where you will be sitting, these Panels (if set far away) may not really be enough power. As for the RGB, its definitely better than to use Gels on a traditional Bi-Color Panel. Because the more saturated you want the color to be, the more light output you lose by putting a very dark colored gel in front of it. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Some people may just put a lamp in the background if they want some sort of backlight thats very subtle and soft. It's all up to you. In the end you really only need one light and a poster board to bounce for a basic youtube talking head. I've only used one light for my face for 4 years and occasically play with backlighting. Can you do a video where you compare LED vs RGB lights? Let's say Neweer 660 LED vs Neweer 660 RGB to see the difference in the lighting, brightness, tone, use with softboxes, etc.?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 4 года назад
Hey hey Graeme! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Actually all of those tests, minus the softbox output comparison, is in this video already. (Brightness and color tones vectorscope are tested against each other) While I don't have the 660 RGB version, I do show how the daylight and tungsten chips compare against the bi-color 660 in this video. I suspect the 660 RGB will raise its LUX close to 450 is my best guess. That being said in my softbox video, the 660 bicolor has a hotspot in the middle while the 660RGB does not because of the LED chips used (lensed vs non-lensed) So in terms of softbox usage, the RGB is probably the most desirable panel. I have 3 of these Neewer 660 RGB panels, but i’m having a very hard time to get a good RGB colored lighting in combination with the GH5 and my lenses. Whether used with an umbrella, softbox or direct… I always have a get a very dark generic image in the RGB mode… While daylight and tungsten does offer a lot better footage. I’ve tried multiple ways of setting them up and still.. 😅 Very strange. For example it’s impossible to come close to the quality of some of the YC color videos on RU-vid although he uses a gh5 as well..
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker Год назад
Hey hey Cinedon! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! When it comes to RGB colors it can get tricky to balance out all the lights so that the colors show through. The GH5 when it comes to certain colors will fade out to white if it's too bright. If you want color in the background you will need to make sure your key light doesn't introduce too much light onto the background as the RGB won't be able to fight over it. You essentially will need the background to be very dim. This will also help if you are further away from the background area so that your keylight is also further away from the background. All said and done, its a very interesting balancing act of light output between your Keylight and RGB's to get the RGB's to really show up. Use your GH5's waveform to keep an eye on how bright the background is. I'd say try and get the RGB to land around 30IRE and your face can be around 50-60IRE. Hope this sort of helps if this is the type of setup you are looking to do with your RGB. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey ninZEROtwo! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I gets this question daily and unfortunately I just do not have a GVM 800D review unit to do my standard tests to compare. However @Curtis Judd just release his review on the GVM 800. While our tests our different in the tools we use, he brings up some wonderful points that I think is worth noting. In the end I believe both lights are similar enough that one doesn't out perform the other. Simply buy the one thats the cheapest at the time and go for it. If aesthetically pleasing design is your thing, then buy the one that looks the best. Either way when you are looking at lights in this size and power, neither one is going to be light and day better than the other. The technology has matured a lot where its pretty much all the same. COB LED's in the higher output is where the current battle is going. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@TLDR_filmmaker

Hey hey Jeff! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! The RGB 660 with the round softbox is technically the better combo on the softbox end as it will fill the softbox better than the Bi-color 660. However the RGB 660 is only decently color accurate on the daylight color temp end, its tungsten is not as color accurate compared to the bi-color 660. Depending on your needs, if using the RGB 660, I would suggest the key light to be daylight set. If you do need to use tungsten, you may want to do some color correction in post. Hope this helps! If you are filming in a small room and do not need all that output power of the 660bi. Then I would go ahead with the three 660 RGB pack. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Nice review! What if i would purchase 3 Bi color 660s and buy some color gel filters to achieve colored light instead of the RGB 660 method as beginner? I would really appreciate if you would tell your opinion about the COLOR GEL filter route Vs. the RGB Led panel route. Pros / Cons welcome. Thanks in advance!

Hey hey Szabolcs! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! As a beginner, the color gel route is definitely a cheaper way to go because not every video you film will require color. Once you pick out the colors you like and at what intensity, just pack them up with your kit and you're good to go on a shoot. The RGB panel is just more convenient and allows you to have a variety of colors and saturation levels without having to test a bunch of gels ahead of time or on set. Hope this helps! I'm looking into buying my firs kit and was about to buy two 660 RGB lights. Your thoughts on the fact that the bi colour ones do a better job at creating accurate skin tones makes me reconsider. I mainly shoot indoors though and wonder how hard it is to correct those skin colours in post? If that isn't too hard, I might still be better off buying RGBs to give me more versatility in the future. I imagine adding something like a Godox VL 150 later to have an even better keylight. Do you think a VL 150 + two 660 RGB panels would work well together? Also, do you have any thoughts on using an octagon reflective panel with the 660s? I heard a panel like that creates great diffusion but I'm not sure if the panels create strong enough light?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey Raoul! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Skin tone is pretty easy to fix, I detail it in this video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WirZIaRm_yQ.html My thoughts is that you want a stronger key light as the RGB's are not going to give you the most keylight power. You can cross check this on my website with all the lights I've reviewed at tldrfilmmaker.com Also check my two latest videos, one is specifically addressing the many diffusion options for the 660 panels. A VL150 is nice for sure, however if you are in a similar filming situation like I am in my recent videos, I use a Godox SL60w at 62% power through a 47" softbox and have enough power for my needs. I know this is a lot to take in as your first kit because you are starting to figure out what you need. Thats what I would say you want to study up first is to know what kind of situation you will be in 95% of the time. Then you will take that information to determine if you actually need powerful lights or if you can get away with just using budget LED panels. Hope this helps for now! Thanks again for stopping by! @@TLDR_filmmaker Thank you, it's very helpful to hear your insights before making the final decision. 95% of the time I will be shooting talking heads and mid shots. I think I could potentially get enough from the 660 bi panels for now but I think I'd rather prepare myself for bigger projects straight away. After checking out the SL60 I discovered there's also a ML60 that's more portable and has a quieter fan and seems to be coming as bi-colour version soon. I think that may be a perfect fit for me and am considering to buy 2 of those for my key + fill light and then adding a Godox (so it can be controlled with the same app) RGB panel with which I can create some coloured rim light or add some colour to the background. Any thoughts on that set-up? Also curious in what scenarios you think an ML60 bi won't be powerful enough. A more powerful option could be buying an Amaran 100x and 200x with Apature RGB panel. Final question if I may :) what height do you think those 3 light stand should have? Neewer seems to be selling very portable 200cm ones but not sure if that would be high enough?

Hey hey hoodaffairstv! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I had a older model of the GVM 50RS mk1, it looks like "some" of GVM's newer RGB panels have effects, not all of them. I would always double check either their marketing pictures of descriptions to make sure. In general, yes, the Neewer panel would be most likely be cheaper than the GVM brand. @jessedoll

In your aputure comparison video, the GVM 50rs was a flood light and neewer 660 a spot light, if one wants to achieve a uniform flat colour on their background, would GVM be considered more apt? Neewer 660 looks more floody here, is that with the soft box?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker Год назад
Hey hey Jesse! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The Neewer RGB is a flood beam type, the Neewer 660 Bi-color is a spotbeam type. So either a GVM or Neewer RGB will be better for uniformity of color on a wall. What you are looking for is SMD type LEDs. This is very easy to spot on a LED panel. SMD will look like little squares on the front of the LED panel, and lensed LED that create a sport beam will look like a bunch of raised glass dome's. While an SMD flood LED will create a more uniformed color spread, you will still technically have a liiitle more brightness in the center. You can negate this by putting diffusion in front of it, but this will cut out some of your light power. Depending on your setup and how much of the wall you need color behind you. You can either use one Panel placed directly behind where you're standing. If that is not enough you will need two or three panels aiming at the wall from various angles to achieve the splash of color on the wall. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hey hey Bartek! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! While I haven't personally used the GVM 480, I can't tell you from a technical stand point if one is more powerful or better than the other (depending on the LED chips used). In terms of primary function, both of these LED's are going to do the same thing and any difference is going to be dependent on the LED chips used. I would take a look at how many chips the GVM uses vs the neewer and from there determine which one fits your budget and go from there! Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! How does this compare with GVM 1000D?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 года назад
Hey hey Shutter Corp.! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The GVM's bi-color mode will pack a little more output punch because the LED's are lensed and focused, where as the Neewer isn't. Essentially the GVM will be a spot type beam where the center is brighter, and the neewer will be more even. As far as RGB goes, they are both not lensed so it will be a nice flood beam. The output will be about the same to negligible difference in camera exposure settings. Thats pretty much the difference between the two. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! @@TLDR_filmmaker Hey thank you for the quick response. Found out theres a new neweer 660 PRO version available now. I'm currently looking at buying either the GVM 880rs or the Neewer 660 PRO 2 Kit version or the GVM 1000D. THe 880Rs and Neewer both have the non lensed flood beam LED diots. I'll mostly be using it to light backgrounds in both the Bi-color and RGBs mode. Considering the different LED chips diots used, which would you recommend?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 года назад
If you are primarily using it for backgrounds then would choose the non-lens diodes for a nice even flood beam. For general purpose this is less distracting for me when lighting up a background. But this is only in bi-color mode as RGB diodes arn't usually lensed. In this case if you are using the bi-color for the background, if you have room to go the extra mile you can shoot the light through diffusion to get ride of the hotspot and multi-shadow look when you take off the front frost panel.

Also the front diffuse cover does not look easily removable, so it you want the strongest output to modify on your own, you'd have to remove that somehow. While the barn doors of the 660RGB don't do much in term of cutting the light, it does help when attaching a panel softbox that I reviewed that you saw and commented in. Hey hey Walternate! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Based on the spec's between the two. A friend of my is currently reviewing the GVM800d and he shared with me the color chart tests and I was surprised to see that the GVM had more color accurate LED chips. Question: I am using 660 LEDs with the squarish softboxes and I get the small rectangle bright spot in the center of the softbox. I heard on another vlog that the RGBs will fill up the entire spftbox better and create more even light. that is what I was thinking of buying the RGBs for. Do you concur? Also, it sounds like you are saying the 660 LEDs are BRIGHTER, will actually throw more light, than the 660- RGBs. Am I miundertanding? I dpn't want to lose light, because I have my 660s on MAX, to get the perfect lighting, in my home studio. Now I am not sure if I want to get RGBs or LEDs. Please help. Thanks.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 4 года назад
Hey hey Cybersky Videos! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! You are correct, when I reviewed the square and circular softbox I showed how the RGB's SMD LED diodes are a wider spread and will light the softbox more evenly. The 660 bi color version is brighter because more chips for the two colors where as the RGB version has to divide up between 3 types of color temps. However in terms of lighting for your home studio, both LED panels can provide plenty of light if you are controlling the light in the room (curtains over windows). If you are in a standard bedroom like I am, both version are going to provide plenty of light in that space. The key to utilizing cheaper LED panel lighting is to bring the lights in as close to you as possible without it being inside the shot. If you do that either of these models will do their job very well. The only time you start to need really powerful lights is if you are trying to light a shot of your entire body standing up. If you are just filming from your stomach to your head, these LED panels with a softbox will suffice. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! @TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hola Alexander! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! It most likely will not be brighter than the 660 Bi-color. The bi-color still has more Bi-color LED's than the 660 RGB PRO, and they are lensed LED diodes, so the light is more focused. You can see the light difference on my website at TLDRfilmmaker.com in the light comparison chart. The 660 bi-color has a much higher Lux reading than the 530RGB, the 660rgb isn't too far behind from what others have tested. The extra 3.3 watt per Bi-color won't bring the 660rgb pro any closer to the full output power of the 660 bi-color. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!
