I shoot events both with 6D and 5D classic. When I look at the pictures in lightroom I can't tell which picture is taken with 6D or 5D. It is an incredible old reliable camera, it produces really sharp, colorful images, I really love it
The original 5D is a lovely camera, no frills. I use mine with the 40/f2.8 pancake and find it a great combination. For a in depth review of this camera Richard Barley has produced a lot of excellent RU-vid videos on why he is still using it for his wedding work after 12 years.
This is my exact my setup. I'm fairly new to the field, but even then I can't see myself getting rid of it any time soon! The only downside to it it's how easily the sensor gets dirty, and being restricted to CF cards.
I loved the 5D classic, the feel, the images, BUT... after my 5D failed me in the middle of a wedding I stopped fully trusting the build quality. The reason for my mistrust was when I found out I was not the only one experiencing this issue. If you Google for "mirror falling out of 5D" you find its a known production problem. Some Canon batches had a genuine issue with build quality... which is a shame since I loved everything else even if some consider it to be an "old banger". But for the sake of it... lets agree with the critics and admit it IS an old banger today... they might however overlook the fact that it's actually a VERY GOOD old banger ;) (besides for the mirror issue)
A great camera, use it for studio and daylight work, easy no frills menu system, It still shoots printable pictures at iso 3200. A back to basics camera. Unfortunately due to all these glowing reviews second hand 5d are going up in price :-). Please take note that these camera's can't be serviced adjusted anymore by Canon (Netherlands) and spare parts are getting scarce. If you are looking for a 5D look for one with the reinforced mirror assy. The focus is somehow limited but since the Nikon F4 used to focus and recompose on the centre point ( It is basically the same focus system of the 200D! except for the dual pixel stuff in LV)
I even used one during a paid job recently (wedding) ... Client were exceptionally happy and were clueless I used such old kit to get my results. One serious warning though, my mirror fell off once in the middle of a shoot. It's a known malfunction which happens on occasion in some batches that was manufactured back in the days. My only other hesitations are slow auto focus if you shoot action, and high ISO is not perfect even though perfectly acceptable up to 800 or so. In conclusion ... I LOVE this camera even if it has a few shortcomings!!!
Man, you're speaking out of my heart. I had the Classic 5D for some time and I loved it. Sadly it broke and I then upgraded to a Canon with better high ISO and autofocus, since I'm mostly shooting concerts. Still the original 5D is way better than many modern consumer cameras.
I know I’m late to the party but your video brought back so many memories of me using that camera professionally when it first came out. The quality was at the time noticeable better than the competition. Only problem with the first batches of these cameras was that after they had been through the mill a bit the glue holding the mirrors on seem to disappear. I’ll leave it to your imagination to guess what happened next.
I have had one for years but with a 85mm. It dose not come out that often but when it dose it is my go to portrait camera. Although it is not the newest camera, it will be prized out of my cold dead hands.
I am in the process of changing to Fujifilm X Systems and have been getting rid of my Canon gear, but when it comes down to parting with the 5D I just can't do it. I love the thud of the shutter button. I've taken and will continue to take many high quality pics with her. Such is the reverence I have for her she has her own special little box to live in!
Nice one mate, so refreshing to see someone hyped about an old camera, there are some awesome ones to be had.. I’ve been looking at a cheap 5d2 for this exact reason.
Ace Casil It does matter if the gear gets in the way of capturing those moments. For example, the 5D could easily get in the way given challenging lighting conditions (said as someone who loves this camera). Gear can help a great deal in working challenging conditions (e.g. moving subjects, poor light), responding faster or more efficiently, being more time efficient in general, simplifying (e.g. capturing more dynamic range without multiple exposures), the list goes on. But what it won’t do is turn a poor photographer into a good one. It won’t help someone much to frame photos better, tell a story, capture the feeling of what’s seen by the eyes, or make up materially for a general lack in knowledge. And a good photographer with a 5D ought to blow away a poor photographer with a 5D IV with ease.
Pablo, try it with the Canon 40mm f/2.8 "pancake". I'd say it's just about the best "Street" setup (cheap too). That 40mm gives you that extra "environment" feeling and it's razor sharp.
I bought the original 5D about a year ago now, still loving it and use it as my main camera :D It's pretty simple in terms of features but does make you question, do you really need all these fancy features anyway? I "upgraded" from a Canon 550D and already had a 50mm 1.8 to use with the 5D. I've since invested a bit in some more lenses.
I feel like one of the reasons we expect so much from gear nowadays is because the media format has changed so drastically. Still photograph is still such an important and beautiful media, but in world with social media the moving image, whether it be a movie, some b-roll, a short film, etc. is so important in story-telling. Especially in the advertising world, you want those *flashy* and moving images to engage in an audience more vividly than a still photo can. That said, as nice as these features are and as nice as they are as tools of creation I think it's nice to come to something like the 5D Classic and that "barebone" aesthetic, it's almost like driving a manual car, and it's really nice to mess around with it and engage in.
I used that camera for years. I really miss it, the D800 never felt quite the same. If I was going back to shooting weddings I would consider getting two D700 bodies.
@@KarinaGlamorous I heard that The Legendary Nikon D700 is way faster, tougher, faster at AF, more intuitive, more versatile, more ergonomic and longer lasting than the 5Dc
Still using my 5D mkII. I've had a few other cameras over the last few years but this one is still used quite a bit, used it today, great pictures. I think Digital cameras have reached a point of sufficiency, they're all good enough for 95% of what we need a camera to do. Some allowance for video, but for photos, they're nearly all good enough.
I was finally able to find it on ebay in perfect condition to say the least, without even a scratch and with all the rubbers in place. Built like a tank as only they knew before. The best purchase I've ever made. I tested it right away and guys, gorgeous colors and spectacular film grain, not to mention the crunchiness that images have! It doesn't even seem to have 12mpx. I also have a 5d mark iv, but the classic 5d has that little bit extra that I only go out with that. And still good pablo reviews!
I bought a beat up 5D from a local photographer, with the mirror revised already (cant fall of). It runs great and I have no other camera creating this unique style. I use it with 50mm 1.8 and 135mm f2. I paid 137€ for the body.
I recently picked up a Nikon D50, cost me £63 including p&p! Didn't need to buy lenses as I already own a "few" Nikkor ones. It's a 13-year-old camera as well, and like you, I was blown away by the image quality. I never shoot in lowlight so I wasn't concerned about that, and I mostly shoot film so not bothered that the LCD screen is a bit shit lol. You really don't need to spend a lot on the latest and greatest to get some nice-looking images.
Great work and images....I totally agree with you...today's people are way to concern about specs and not so much photography. Why? because they feel they can have fun bashing the opposite brands on youtube. What is funny is that when I ask to exchange links to view each others work they always stay silent. Why? because their camera full of features don't necessarily transfer into nice images. I have the 5D4 and I love it...it is so nice to go on a walk and just take pictures.
Great video highlight that full frame is affordable. I got into full frame after shooting Nikon film camera, now I’ve gone for a Nikon D750 and the files are gorgeous. The cameras are heavier but I think it is worth it.
I picked one up pristine condition 10k shots. Dont have a lens yet. Not sure if i go for 50mm 1.4 or save an extra month for 35mm 1.2 which is the one i really want. edit: i got the 1.4 lens.
This video encourage me to start photography again after 11 years hybernate. And i think i will start with this set up because its full frame, i dont care if it is nikon canon sony or any. As long as it gets job done , try to get max result with min expense.
I still have both the camera and the lens. It's a phenomenal camera. I still think it has one of the best sensors out there. Though I shoot a 6d and x100f these days, I won't get rid of the old girl.
I'm not a professional photographer by any means but I can easily say that this camera is still a beast even by today's standards and it all boils down to it's 'Full Frame' capabilities. Previously I was using a Canon EOS 200D and after I made the switch to this Canon EOS 5D the images that I'm getting out from the 5D using the same exact lens are miles better than what I was getting with my 200D. Colours, Bokeh, Details, etc are just way superior to that of my 200D.
Glad you’re enjoying your new set up, looks good. I’ve started using vintage lenses on my Fuji and am very happy with the results for the price plus the manual focus is really engagingly
Just got my 5d classic first foul frame for me and the picks are great straight out of the camera . Almost 3000€ camera cost me only 300€ . Creat video
Used these back in the day and they were great. The problem now is that they do no have micro-adjust for focus, and many of these old 5D's focus has drifted over the years. Canon won't mess with them, so it's just luck if you get one that focuses properly now.
Hi, I’m about to get mine in a few days and so I’m excited about it! Thanks for this quick review. I was just wondering If I can also do large prints using this setup? Thanks again!
Aside from the turntable screen. What's better between classic 5d and the brand new 2000d? Both is for all kind of shooting, with a 16-300mm objective.
Use mine with a 50mm 1.4, 3200 iso or (high) is not that bad on this camera and I could recommend this to about anyone starting because of the easy to set and shoot menu system... Btw I always shoot 5600 K in daylight and 3200 K in nighttime as a WB setting find it more pleasing to the eye, but always Raw if needed to change anything in post.
This feels strange, revisiting 5 years after my original comment. Reason: I bought, then sold, a used 5D in 2018 and regretted selling it the day after. Fast forward to 2024 and I bought a showroom condition 5D (MPB France, I moved abroad) for £229 (£200). It looks like nobody ever touched it in its 19 years. It will now have my 40mm f/2.8 "pancake" attached. It's a beautiful camera to use. Just that shutter sound alone makes you want to take pictures. I don't think it replaces more modern cameras, it complements them though. I'm about to trade my 50Mp Canon 5DSR in order to buy a Canon R6mkii. That will give me, in my opinion, a collection of cameras that are good enough for the rest of my life. Canon R6mkii, Canon 5D, Canon 6D, Fuji X100V. That's all the bases that I want covering, covered. I have the "Holy Trinity" of Canon Zooms in F4 variants + some Primes. Can I also point out that the 6D is as good a bargain as you are ever likely to find. I'd say it was a modern 5D equivalent. A 5D with the missing parts added. Grab one while you can for £300.
the 5D mark II or the Canon 6D are much better camera's in a lot of ways. Except for 1 thing: the look & feel of the images. Yes, they are sharper on the other 2, but... the 5D classic has a film-like look on the photo's. It's amazing
Hi Pablo, it's Sean from Atlanta. Is this the end of the X100T era? Is the Canon dramatically larger to hold? The stills images look excellent! Also, how is your music career going? I hope all is well with you, and your beautiful wife and dog, and appreciate seeing this new video! Beautiful wedding, by the way! I had to get up at 4a.m.!!!
That is an amazing statement as I know you love your X100T! The detail must be a big step up! I wonder if the full frame bug can travel across the pond to Georgia! Yikes!
I have the very same setup ... it’s awesome the picture quality is great ... try it with the 58mm Helios lens it will blow you away ... which you can buy on line for around £40
Sir ,may i ask you something ? I am up to shoot shortfilms .. Should i go for canon g7x or any dslr near that range ? Plz suggest me .. Researching for 15 days and still confused
that's a great setup, I use it on a regular basis. my instagram is @perfectionist_photography if you want to check out some more pictures taken with a 5d classic. however I recommend the 40mm 2.8 as a lens it's a far better starter lens that can do both portraits and wide ish shots
I had that camera and I had only three gripes with it: 1) No live view thus no precise focus if phase detection sensor is faulty. 2) No possibility to calibrate lenses on your own. 3) Due to only 2 fps unusable for any action, sports etc...
*Anyone talking 5D Classic deserves my like and comment!* Check out what you can do with it and dirt cheap *24-85mm* : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iFD8Uh_CsqE.html and *75-300 III* : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--KKjf-Y88Kc.html Unbelievable! Basically these two lenses cover everything from very wide angle to real telephoto and are razor sharp.
