Is there a chemical that removes carbon from your engine that works the best? With so many options on the market I decided to test them and find out which one works the best. I tested seafoam among other popular chemicals.

The problem you have with brake cleaner is that you take all lubricant off as well and it is very hard on rings. If you use Sea Foam correctly, you will notice it is far better than the competition.

I've used Seafoam for a BUNCH of years, and still do, but the CRC stuff works considerably better for GDI intake valves, so I use it in addition to Seafoam on my GDI engine.

The Intake Cleaners work better when used as directed. They require at most is an ample heat curing time and some agitation during engine operation. It's good to see what the properties are when items are simply soaked.

Been cleaning pistons for 45 plus years .. first clean in parts cleaner to remove all oil deposits so you have dry non oily parts. then toss in bead blaster with glass beads and pistons look like no no damage in minutes. you can also use soda blaster it works just as well might take a little more time but when done you do not have to worry about missing some of the glass beads and have it inside the new engine wiping out bearings like with glass beads the soda washes away with water and even if you miss some does no damage in assembled engine. glass beads is perfectly harmless to clean engine parts accept when mechanic is a filthy slob and doesn't remove all the grit. Newer style heads with SOHC or DOHC do not recommend glass beads unless you remove all the core plugs and run brushes through all the oil galleys and use compressed air and even then I use soda blasting or sonic cleaning (or both) too many places glass beads can get trapped and end up in assembled new engine. If your going to rebuild engine invest in tools and do side work to pay for the tools. wanna buy ultrasonic cleaner ? line up a few friends to pay to have fuel injrctors cleaned and invest in tool kit to replace the injector screens etc.. charge $12 each and $3 or so is all new seals and screens cost per injector use the profit to pay for the ultrasonic cleaning tool .. modern pcv valves on new cars are 50-75 each or more .. submerge pcv valve in ultrasonic cleaner for 30 minutes and good as new.. clean spark plugs and o2 sensors as well .. cleaner pays for itself within a week or 2 jobs .. and that's if you splurge for 22 liter model

Who really knows which is "best". I have a Hyundai Santa Fe with a 2.4 GDI engine and used the CR cleaner at about 50,000 miles (I'm pretty sure it had never been done) and the engine ran noticeably better, quicker starts, smoother idle, more power. I believe the "secret" is to use a intake cleaner every 5000 - 10,000 miles. If carbon is left to build up on intake valve back sides too much it's likely very difficult to clean off. I also installed a oil catch can to hopefully reduce the amount of build up in the future.
@wm.bradgilbert3852
@wm.bradgilbert3852 4 года назад
Yeah, regular treatment just before an oil change keeps the carbon low, and less likely for DI carbon to blow chunks into your turbo . Every 5 to 10K seams about right. Also Red Line Oil keeps vapor from your pcv and depositing in intake valves.

The only problem is, they instantly evaporate when they make contact w/the hot parts. Soaking in a cold engine seems to be the better option, perhaps overnight vs. just two hours. Also too, do this just before you do an oil change, because these chemicals get into the oil.

If I buy this kind of cleaner is usually just to clean the throttle body because there's no carb cleaner or its sold out...on a modern engine there is NO need to decarbon anything as a matter of routine. If you want to do everything you can to try and remove any excess carbon, dumping in Seafoam or Techroline in the tank every so often does it just fine. A healthy engine burns away carbon as fast as it gets created, if your engine has too much carbon its probably caused by too much short trips or driving in cold weather, where the engine doesn't warm up (at least once a month). And otherwise the car could be burning oil from leaky valve seals or some other engine issue. Fix the problem and the carbon will burn away on its own.

Seems that tetrachloroethylene makes up that particular brake cleaner, a highly effective organic solvent. A quick search on wikipedia reveals that when burned at temperatures over 599 degrees F it can form phosgene a very lethal gas. I wouldn't recommend using this inside an engine or using it where it could be burned. Unfortunate because it seems to work so well.

I was reading and going to try on my 2013 impala today. CRC DI spray recommends getting vehicle to operating temp , then spraying in burst intervals while your car is held at 2k rpm intermittently revving to 3-35k rpm’s to keep it from dying. Then afterwards two revs and waiting then taking on a 10 minute highway drive before letting sit. Of course pulling intake tube and spraying before your MAF into your throttle body.. my only problems I’m thinking is my cat, and my oil , what’s going to be coming out after the cleaning… having cylinders 2,4,6 random misfire codes after changing spark plugs and all coil packs…. Thinking having valve issues but hoping not having to check springs or fuel injectors… ughh

HOWEVER, i put a segment of rubber hose in a glass jar with each of the tested fluids. only B12 decomposed the rubber. i think the other fluids were seafoam and mmo. so, just because a fluid can remove carbon does not mean it is perfectly safe in a vehicle. Thanks for taking the time to test these products out. Brake cleaner seems to be champ here. However, I am not sure if you can spray break clean into the engine like the CRC cleaner. You probably could, once it gets into the cylinder it will burn just like the CRC valve and turbo cleaner.
@channell11
@channell11 2 года назад
That's what you have to consider. The CRC isn't designed to be used as a solvent like brake cleaner. Brake cleaner is a bit volatile to be spraying into a running engine. The valve cleaner is designed to be sucked in by the vacuum of the engine, and when you're finished you let the engine "hot soak" for an hour and then take it for a drive.

Not really an apples to apples comparison my guy. Brake clean is not mean to be used in the combustion cycle, the other 2 are. Sea Foam Motor Treatment is made with 100% safe organic petroleum ingredients that work to clean and lubricate. It does NOT have harsh detergents or abrasive chemicals that can harm your engine or fuel system components. In summary, it’s a blend of three petroleum cleaning and lubricating oils that work together as a cleaner, lubricant, and to stabilize fuel. Brake clean doesn't lubricate shit, its super harsh. One of these products can be used when you pull your pistons out of your engine block, the other two you use when your engine is still running.

I had a Nissan Stanza years ago. I added an oil additive designed to remove carbon and engine gunk from the oil. Days later it was burning oil like crazy. If the manfacturer diesnt recoment it, don't do it.

None of your cleaners worked. If you want to clean carbon, then get a one gallon container of carburetor chem dip cleaner. Soak parts overnight then rinse off with water. Parts will have no carbon on them and look brand new.
