BRANDS TESTED: Milwaukee, DeWalt, Makita, Ryobi, and Worx. Let's test 5 brands of lithium battery powered chainsaws: All of the chainsaws compared against each other and against a 16-inch Stihl MS 170 gasoline chainsaw. The chainsaws competed in 3 tests which include 2 cutting speed tests on 4x4 lumber and one test on hardwood. All of the saws were also tested for battery charge time, no-load run time, noise level, and no-load sprocket/chain speed.

I threw my brand new 18" Oregon bar and chain on my Ryobi (my broken Poulan Pro wasn't using it any more) and slapped in a 6 amp hour battery I could not be happier with the saw. When you consider start time and re-start times of gas saws, the vibration, noise, smell and mixing fuel, Battery saws are awesome. I did not know about the long recharge time. The 6 AH battery lasts so long, I can cut up a 30' tree without issue. I use the same batteries for my string trimmer, blower and lawn mower. It cuts chucks out of the tree and gets clogged up a bit and I need to clean it out from time to time.

I just switched from 40V electric brushless back to 2-stroke for trimmers and chainsaw. I am mostly impressed with how light the gas trimmers are(10bs vs the electrics 14lbs). I always have a large amount of stored ethanol free gasoline for the generators, wood chipper and tiller. Just have to keep in mind, once these 40V batteries fail and aren't under warranty, they cost $200+ for a proper replacement. And you can buy off-brand variants. But I've had poor luck with them. I'm already sunk into DeWalt 20V tools, but mainly because of some good deals I got. I'm not sure the extra cost of their chainsaw and 20V/60V battery is worth it to me for the fairly light duty limb fall that I usually deal with. I was impressed by Ryobi's performance, being on the low budget end. @Project Farm: One contender that was missing is the Hart brand (sold by Walmart). I'm told that Hart products are manufactured by the same company as Ryobi, so I wonder how the Hart 40V chainsaw ($188 list price) would compare to the Ryobi ($200) you've just tested.

Depends what you are using them for I think. For farm jobs if you want to hack through some firewood or thin a bit of woodland then I don't think the ICE saws can be beaten - yet. But for other jobs - I'm thinking fencing and especially hedgelaying - where you might want to use a saw for a minute every five or ten minutes I think battery power might come into it's own. Starting and stopping a petrol/gasoline saw gets tiresome after the umpteenth repetition and takes a non-negligible amount of time. Plus there's the racket they make...

I have some additional tips for consideration. Low chain speed can cause the chain to catch on small branches and pull them towards you, causing something similar to kickback and whipping the operator with branches. High chain speed is more likely to break through these small branches rather than pulling them.

I bought into DeWalt's ecosystem a while ago, and I cant tell you how impressed I have been. Where they don't compete with Milwaukee or Makita, they make up for it in other areas. Overall, they have been a great addition to the garage to replace some older tools that got swiped out of my work truck. I do use a chainsaw frequently, though not for long periods of time while at work, and I bought the DeWalt 16" saw and it is every bit as good as this review makes it sound. The only complaint I have with it isn't the safety, as you do get used to it (their circular saw has the same style safety) it's that the batteries don't release easily and sometimes feel like after use, they get stuck in it. That's probably not a big deal to a lot of you younger people, but an old man like me gets pretty tired by the end of the day, and fidgeting with the release on my saws isn't what I want to do when I just really want to get packed up, put away, and go home.

@JSTaylor556 2 года назад
@@wegmandan thats oddly aggressive. yes, I do use those tools for my work, and I'm just saying it as I see it. 2 and 4-cycle saws have their place, and if I was going to use a saw for longer or larger cuts, I think common sense would tell me to use a conventional chainsaw. For my purposes, the DeWalt saw works more than great. I have had it for a while now and it gets the job done every time. no complaints. My family doesn't go hungry, and I'm not being disingenuous. I don't use a chainsaw for hours on end every day, but I do use it at least a few times a week while working on some of my commercial properties. No complaints yet.

@jaysunkreuze1466
@jaysunkreuze1466 2 года назад
The 60v battery on a 60v tool is 3 times more efficie than 20v. It's all about the watt hour rating. The 6ah 60v battery may only produce 3ah at 60v but the watt hours at 60v simply crushes all other battery ecosystems out there for efficiency. At 60v they create less heat, less internal resistance, and less current. It's the same with solar systems. 24v systems are twice as efficient as 12v systems because higher voltage systems require less amps to accomplish the same task, and amps generate heat which reduces efficiency. A 100ah 12v battery is superceded by a 100ah 24 battery by double. Now apply the math to the 60v ecosystem and you cannot justify investing in anything else unless the tool is junk, and it's not.

I have 3 Stihl battery saws. I was in New Hampshire and a tree fell in my son's yard and bought a Ryobi 40v 12" top handle brushless saw from Home depot that just came on the market. It came with a 4ah battery. We were cutting in 20º weather. I was totally impressed with this saw. It ran longer than me and had all kinds of power. Take a look at the new 40v Ryobi. It did have a plastic bumper and required tools stored on the saw for chain adjustment. The oil reservoir did not last as long as the battery. I ran over my Stihl HTA85 pole saw's motor and it still works fine. I don't think the Ryobi could put up with this kind of torture but it sure cut smoothly and had a lot of power. The battery life in the freezing cold was impressive. My other saws are the MSA 220, MSA 200 and a Milwaukee Hatchet M12. Ken Luikart

Black locust, hard maple, hard elm and red, burr and white oak trees that are still green all cut just fine (easy with a sharp chain). When they die and you want to cut them down before they rot, black locust, hard maple and hard elm are the toughest. Your videos ROCK!! Shouldn’t the RPM comparison be run with the chain installed and/or under the same load?

Whoever was doing the sawing did a great job, adapting to many different types of saw 'preferences' to get the maximum from each saw. I thought Stihl had an electric line?

Great review, just what I’ve been wanting to see. It would be nice to see Ego, Stihl, Husqvarna and Greenworks battery chainsaw in a comparison too. 👍

@@ProjectFarm another vote for including Greenworks. I bought one about 4 years ago and the oiler just died, but I've been really happy with it.

I used to sell these, the Stihl consumer electric chainsaws (the AK battery models) are roughly comparable to the 60v DeWalt. Their AP "professional" line are basically as good as it gets for battery saws but they are significantly more expensive.

Great comparo for sure. I too felt like the Makita was the best all around saw. Good build quality too, probably because they bought Dolmar and they are known for nice chainsaws too!
