The affordable Deepcool AK400 tower cooler is the next in a recent trend of cheap, high-performing CPU air coolers. If you're building a new gaming PC soon, our CPU cooler benchmarks will help you pick the best air cooler (or liquid cooler) for the job. The AK400 air cooler competes vs. the Vetroo V5, Thermalright's Assassin Spirit, and higher-end coolers like the Arctic Freezer 34 Esports.

Add a Thermaltake Contac Silent 12 to the group. It's even lower priced at $25-$30 depending on the winds. It's older, but still constantly in stock any time I've looked for another. Oh! And it will fit inside a 4u rack case. Barely. So it's actually still relevant for all the people who are recycling computers into HomeLab servers. That probably also means it will fit into a mid-tower? I'd like to see how these compare to the current $35-$50 offerings, even if none of those are ever going to fit into the kind of machines I'm going to build. It's always interesting to me to see just HOW low you can go until the performance/price curve starts getting unacceptable. For me it was really just about finding the best "reasonably priced" cooler that would actually fit and also not be loud. At the time there really wasn't much else other than $65-$80 Noctua offerings, or 2u stock screamers (which were also going for $65+ used on Ebay) I have 3 of these sitting in my rack next to my desk right now keeping some 120w TDP Xeons cool. Those machines have been at 96-99% usage for the last 2+ months and the hottest core is @ 63°C (25°C room). And that is with my lazy use of graphite thermal pads instead of thermal paste. This is quiet enough that I can JUST make out my 2070 Super fans when they ramp all the way up. That includes all the OTHER fans in the 4 machines too. (Gaming PC in same rack. 85% fan cap on GPU.) They have limitations though. They can't handle a 180w Naples Epyc under load. =( But then again, these are $25 coolers... I keep my Epyc server in another rack in the basement so I don't hear it. Also because the heat is becoming unmanageable in this room... ...But DAC cables are *expeeeeeeeeensive* and I'm being cheap. It would LITERALLY cost me like $300+ in cables just to move those machines straight down 1 floor. (Unless I can figure out how to disable the fan-failure protection on my 40G/56G switch so I can watercool it. That would save on the cables, but it is just too loud to use. Like...anywhere. I have literally had a neighbor come over to "see what that noise is". And it was in my basement at the time. I can hear it through my sound insulation AND wearing closed back headphones.)

I would love to see some tests of the cooler designs in isolation of the fans. Ex: Take one noctua A12X25 and mount it to each cooler, If it will take 2 fans try one then both. Once you have your benchmarks compare it to stock and see if swapping fans makes a significant difference. Then we can see what cooler is best and put whatever fans we want on it to go with our build.

If this was done, I would hope to see the rankings organized by the price of the cooler + the price of the new fan, since a builder would probably need to buy both. I suspect for a budget cooler the improvement is not significant enough to justify the cost of a new fan.

Whichever method of cooling you choose, the last stage is always 'transfer heat from some metal into the air'. Not only this, but the first stage is always 'transfer heat from your silicon into some metal'. The only thing that changes are the intermediate stages, generally this involves some fluid, either passively or actively moved, usually in a water cooling system or heat pipes. Depending on the efficiency of the intermediate stages, you might be better off just putting the heat directly into the metal, then moving that heat into the air.

I just put the AK400 on my 5800X3D and I like it so far. I removed the pre-applied thermal compound, and instead used Kryonaut Extreme. I also replaced the stock fan with a BeQuiet 120MM High Speed PWM Silent Wings 4 due to personal preference since I'm using BeQuiet fans in the rest of my setup. I have yet to hit any thermal issues in gaming, but I could still add a second fan if necessary. The BeQuiet fan does have a higher max speed at 2500rpm than the stock DeepCool fan, so that is likely helping things. No clearance issues using a Lian Li 205 mesh case, a ROG Strix B550-XE Gaming board with 4 sticks of G.Skill Trident Z Neo RGB RAM.

Be advised, Kryonaut Extreme is not meant for long term use. It’s for XOC users that are using LN2. The paste is pretty thin and will pump out quickly. Regular Kryonaut or even Hydronaut (I use this one) is a much better choice.

DeepCool has been a hidden gem for years. I bought a DeepCool Lucifer V2 cpu cooler back in 2014 and it's been cooling a 4690k@4.6GHz for 8 years. No issues. Fan still going strong. Cpu under heavy gaming load (3+ hours) never exceeds 61c. And it was only like $35-40 then?

I really wanted to upgrade from stock amd cooler to a stand up air cooler. I went to best buy and they had one stand up air cooler for 50 bucks. They also had a Thermaltake 120 mm AIO on sale for 60 bucks. I went with the aio, there are probably more things I needed to plug in, but I am very happy I found such a good deal. I'm running at 24 degrees Celsius at idle with a R2600. Cinebench only gets it up to 55 degrees where the stock cooler went up to 92 degrees.

The fan being slightly concave is great. It means it can be mounted closer to the front of the case and not make contact. Its no benefit to speeds or throughput, but a clever way to reduce potential noise and increase longevity.
