Usually very feminine with a focus on hips and good posture, includes influences from hip hop, waacking, vogue and other styles, often according to the current trends. I've wanted to ask this question on your rankings for awhile, but do you account for phrasing and dynamics in these rankings? I've seen you mention the textures... Is that something similar? Or is phrasing too close to something more subjective like artistic expression, and therefore just not part of what you're doing?
@@juliathiessen5221 I mention dynamics quite often, and for phrasing I point out when idols aren't able to connect steps, and I also notice when they aren't able to clearly end a phrase (usually the fluidity based ones) though I don't think I have yet pointed it out. Phrasing in terms of artistic decision isn't part of the criteria though, no
pls consider ist ent! so many underrated dancers in there (tho some have left the company) their dance line apink - bomi, namjoo victon - chan (former), hanse, seungwoo weeekly - soojin, monday, soeun atbo - junseok, rakwon, seunghwan not too sure abt tbz's since i dont stan them 😅 but their main dancers are juyeon and q iirc
his facials need to improve. idols are not being praised just for the technique nowadays. usually the most popular kpop idols-dancers become popular because of visuals and artistry too. there’s many just talented dancers out there like leeknow, he doesn’t really stand out
@@gooddary5677 I think he improved alot stage presence wise, in concerts he always goes off and there are times he overshadows the other members when he uses alot of energy.

Commercial and freestyle weren’t hard for me to decide at all but holy crap open style has my mind hurting😂 I wanna say Jimin but Dino is also really good so I can’t not mention him
honestly, I really want to see your take on jyp groups from 4th gen (esp nmixx and stray kids) because they are really good at performing but I want to know more about their dancing

I'm thinking that it would be nice that dancing style in kpop was less "gendered-coded" if I'd say like in that way, more and more idols are trained in a atypical dance style like Iroha from I'll-it, Hayoung from Fromis_9 or Hwanwoong from Oneus. It would be so a breeze of fresh air to see more diversity in that regard
@@dhy0114 I don't think so, Le Sserafim Easy choreo was pretty outstanding with a very fast-paced movement that is usually the case for bg choreo. In other hand, I have the feeling that bg choreo are really less exhausting/tensed, for example Ampers&one, Lun8, TWS, Zb1... so, the trend for me is really different (I think it's for the best).
@@paresse7863lsrfm benefits from hybe which dares to integrate open style elements, also newjeans debut albums pretty open style despite elegant music which is very special. Other than hybe and babymonster @ yg the current non big 4 elegant ggs all with typical gg/idol dancing, like ive etc… fromis has hayoung but their choreos still typical gg choreos… Kep1er also have several members trained in open style, but when they do relatively more elegant musics the choreos just your typical elegant gg dancing… Need also good choreographers who cater for those atypical dance style idols lol, like mihawk really sucks just purely beautiful gg choreos without considering the dance traits of members… (but tbh lsrfm don't have open style foundation better at idol dancing, watching "easy" choreo I just think oh newjeans who is decent at open style will dance much better in it
@@MultiStan1516 That's not what I meant x) I mean, he's good at dancing overall, obviously, but I think there are better dancer in commercial dance, like Chaewon or other female idols in hybe, but it's complicated to say since several female main dancer have hip hop background. The8 do not seems to be a commercial dancer tho (b-boying or open style more likely)
For freestyle (or maybe open style) for Hybe, I also want to mention jihoon from TWS! He has much less material than the others that are being mentioned, but in his pre-debut videos he’s shown a lot of potential and proficiency in freestyle. Idk abt ranking but if people are considering hybe dancers they should take a look at jihoon bc he has done some really impressive stuff!
I would love a part 2, the mid-tear and nugu companies could always use the exposure. This made me realize there that weren’t really any standout girl group dancers in Hybe, must be something to do with their training. To be fair I don’t know much about fromis_9, but they were trained outside of the Hybe system so things were probably different. Same for Gfriend. Maybe there’s an overly “masculine” influence in the company, so the more typical feminine dances end up falling by the wayside. I could be wrong though. I do wish it was less gender normative though, I hope there’s a day where we can get a girls open style ranking and a boys commercial/jazz funk ranking as well.
@@amethyst034 But the problem is that she seems to be more into hip-hop type of dance than commercial. I think she's great as well, as almost every female idol are trained in commercial, but yeah, a lot of female main dancer in hybe are rooted in the hip hop style, that's confusing :')

I understand the commercial dance indecision at Hybe. there are a handful of gg dancers who are on a similar level and no one really explodes out of that pack. p much all the ggs from Hybe, past and present, have had great cohesive group skill as well. it's hard. for open and freestyle... my thoughts are the same as yours, friend. get hype for the street dance docuseries!
HYBE dancers tend to be better at open style and I really didn’t realize it until this video! I can’t think of any particularly notable commercial dancers so far. Maybe this will change as their groups grow and develop since aside from BTS and fromis_9 they’re still quite young as artists. I do see commercial potential in Yunah from ILLIT though, she was a really stunning dancer on RUNEXT along with Iroha.

For Hybe I suggest you divide between idols who debuted after the creation of the company from idols who were in their respective companies before the coining. Hybe is not exactly a company but a conglomerate. They invest in all their subsidiaries and share resources. Including trainees and instructors. Depending on when and for how long some idols started training at their company before debuting under Hybe, their abilities tell more about their companies (at least back then) than Hybe Labels. Because many were in one company for maybe 2 years but were moved to another and debuted after 3 months. It’s best to make a difference. This is the reason why I also am not fond of people referring to Hybe as one independent company. I think it’s also to shy away from the realisation that there are more companies being not ideal than they would like to admit and put all the blame on Hybe labels. I am talking about everything: Skills, economic decisions, behaviour from idols and staff and even the age of their idols. Those companies have now become faceless but they actually choose what,who,how etc. But because they share resources and instructors, I definitely expect many idols to come out of Hybe labels with Open Style since it seems to be the preferred style so far. I have already seen quite a lot.Among the ladies especially. Some of them start from commercial (as seen in trainee show competitions) but they all develop being more open later on. Meanwhile the males, as most cases are open style but because of the resurgence of freestyle in male kpop, Half of them are easily freestyle.
Yup, the division should be ( BTS, TXT, Enhypen)- Bighit trainees and Enhypen is personally handled by Bighit music producer and choreographer *PLEdis , HYBE Japan * Koz, soumu, Ador, Illit

oh JHOPE is taking it for freestyle for sure, but probably open style too for hybe!! especially after his new dance docu “hope on the street”? Man’s a beast already and STILL learning from legends, especially the popping? He’s nearly unbeatable
i do have to say being LK biased kinda spoiled me rotten when it comes to watching choreography and performances because i constantly expect his precision and musicality everywhere now 😭

But with the kpop type of training, idk, maybe she switched here style to a more commercial type of dance but... that's not really what she showed on the survival

Anyway don't Yunah and Moka have dance training outside Hybe too? They may turn out to be dark horses idk I'm throwing darts
@@Ruruku But I don't really think Jimin or Yeonjun is a commercial type of dancer, even if they're pretty good I think. Ni-ki could fall in this category too, if we look at his background even if isn't a commercial dancer either (he do has taken some commercial dance class)

I would like to hear your opinion on Iroha (illit's maknae), i saw her dancing while she was in runext and i think she fits open style than commercial but what do you think? Also katseye members are also rlly good at dancing, their two main dancers are so good but they havent debuted yet😅
In regards to open style in JYP, you should check out their Japanese boy group (hasn’t debuted yet, but has posted dance videos and stuff) NEXZ. Tomoya is P.H.E.N.O.M.E.N.A.L. I think they’d be very cool to look into
Hybe my pick would be Commercial maybe Chaewon from Le Sserafim or Hanni, I also see Niki there but I really cant decide one haha Freestyle, Though Hybe has some good freestylers, I would argue JHOPE is the elite amongst them And For Open, I would say Jhope again, I mean I can See Jimin, Dino and even Yeonjun in her but As Open with different genres can get, Jhope excels in many! SO dude takes it for me 😅
I didn't like Shotaro's freestyle to 10 minutes recently.. I don't think someone who is actually good at freestyle would approach it like that. Doing the tracing wave twice, then awkward mix of hip hop and boogaloo basic steps. Ten, Jisung or Hyoyeon (is she still with SM?) would probably be better guesses, Shindong if he's still in SM though he usually relies on routines
lisa danced thai dance for a long while and her dancing still has those marks, i'd say as a dancer that she's more of an intersection between commercial and open style dance
2 of my biases in one vid, lee know and wooyoung. 3rd and 4th gen. I always end up stan main dancers bcs I love dancing sm, am not a dancer but love dancing since teenage yrs, can't help but automatically analyse idols dancing when they dance

Unpopular opinion, but Jungkook for Commercial? I mean, we all saw his Perfect Night dance challenge and wasn't he better than every member of Le Sserafim? Also just think about how he danced the Permission to Dance chorus. He is a shockingly good jazz pop dancer. I don't know why everyone tries to pretend he's all about power and masculinity.
I think he can do a commercial type of choreo pretty well, but does he has the foundation/background ? I mean, Hanni or even Chaewon were more trained in that genre
@@paresse7863 I can see it with Hanni, maybe, but Le Sserafim as a whole doesn't seem to have enough extension, flow, groove, or power when dancing even their own dances. I know there are different expectations for female idols, but in what way are they better? Being trained more in a particular female idol style is not the same as commercial jazz pop.
@@juliathiessen5221 Of course not, but it seems that female idol are mostly trained in a commercial type of dance for their choreos which is helping with the basis you should have for commercial dance. That's not the same, but that helps a lot. And I don't think Junkook was trained in that genre ? Idk. Female idole are mostly way more competent in a commercial based choreo than male idol, and I do think any female main dancer in hybe are better in this type of dance than J-hope, Junkook, Jimin etc...
