Bonus Tip: Get used Pallet Wrap, which most places will just throw away. Those large big box stores like Home Depot (Bunnings in Oz), particularly where they might sell large bags of potting mix off a pallet. Those pallets have to be wrapped well due to unstable bags (unlike boxes that might have a light wrap), so if you enquire what day they get most of their deliveries they can put some aside for you. The benefit here is that it is the one type of plastic, so is consistent and is free.

my only concern is the angle of the arrows when penetrate , angles are random due to the material inside you cannot see the parallelism of them , so in case of long range shooting , can it be an issue ? I mean : it can be nice to check the balistics of arrow in long distance in case of layers of carpet , I guess the problem is solved ( but MUCH heavier target )

Great video! I was wondering how to go about building my first target that wouldn't ruin my arrows. As soon as you said pallet wrapping, well, I work in a factory where we throw that stuff away, so I knew I could get all that I needed for free. Plus I used the wood pallet to build a box frame 700mm × 700mm × 200mm. For the front and back faces I also used a huge bulk bag from work that we also throw away. It's made of the same fibrous plastic material as tarps. I put it all together the same as yours, and it stops arrows perfectly. I was worried about pass throughs and ruining my fletchings, but the arrows stop about 3 inches in. That's using a 40lb recurve at 15 to 20 meters. I have the bonus of having dual face, now that I know the arrows don't pass through. So when one face is worn out, I'll just spin it around and use the other side. Top target!!

Brilliant! I've been stockpiling plastic bags, bubble wrap, plastic packaging, etc, and some cardboard boxes, but this seems like it would be simpler and have better longevity. I might try it with a large rectangular Rubbermaid container. When not in use, I could probably squeeze the lid on and set it upright to keep it dry.

That's brilliant Kev! Thank you. The only downside is that it makes me feel like a fool. I spent 1200 kronor on a target this year. That's about 120 euro I think, I'm going to save a lot of money in the future thanks to this video. I've been trying all sorts of things to do my own target, and I must admit that I just got tired of it, so I bought one instead. This one looks like an easy way to do for myself. So again, thank you Kev! Greetings from Sweden

Why not just put a weave of builders string? Or Netting? That way the arrow will never 'pierce' the cover, but just go through it into the stoppage? :3

We used to stuff onion bags or burlap sacks with grocery bags. It worked surprisingly well to stop arrows, especially if it was suspended. The lightweight targets would stop the arrows, even if you missed the thickest center part, by rolling with the shots.

Great ideal plus on the cheap for those that don't want to drop a lot of cash. Seen a lot of DIY on targets for Archery and most get into a lot of work or required power tools. Not to mention a long list of materials to buy that can really increase the cost to manufactured models seen in stores or in online shops. I think a few who have posted below have missed the point. Clearly this is just a ideal where one can modify to fit his or her needs. Anyways, great ideal @Robin Hood Archery!

i can get around a big palm sized group at my best often twice as large spread but not better than that at 18 meter or 20 yards i shoot with both eyes open without aiming/using the point tip for reference. At around 15 yards and in ward i can hit palm sized nearly everytime and at 10-12 yards i can nearly robin hood my arrows. Now i have only shoot 4 times. But i want to start off right learn good habits and dont learn bad stuff. I am shooting tre under with a tab. Using a black sheep nova recurve bow only thing i could afford with skylon frontier carbon arrows. How do i get good and most important consistent everytime because out of 6 arrows maybe one or two are like maybe 10 inches of where i aim sometimes when i get a little tired.

The best place I have found to get a ton of plastic is from Mattress warehouses. All the new mattresses are wrapped in it and they literally just throw it all away. I was quick and just dumpster dived but I’m sure they would have given it away if I asked.

I like this target idea better than having to build a box but I'll have to see if I can find a tub like that here in the U.S...probably. I'll have to admit, I had to go look up what "Hessian" is. I thought a Hessian was someone from the German State of Hesse, silly me. Of note, it is boat launching season here in the area surrounding the Chesapeake Bay where we live and that means lots of used plastic shrink wrap. People winterize their boats here using shrink wrap coverings, terrible from a plastics in the landfill point of view but I think it will work great to stuff a target. Thank you for the video and idea!

In my opinion way to much work and added expense of a bucket and tape. For decades (I'm 75 years old) all I've done for an equivalent home made target is to stuff a burlap or nylon feed bag with plastic and tie off the top with some string. An old shot up bag can sometimes just be stuffed into a new bag. Yeah, if you like round targets your looks better. It looks like you've already got one leaning against your bench.

Hi, There are a few possibilities but local businesses, especially electrical and furniture stores, throw masses of this stuff away on a daily basis. They will usually have a container specifically for plastic waste. A kind word in the right ear and they are usually more than willing to let you take as much as you want away

$5 dollars? More like fifty for the bucket. One other way to go, is to fill it with sand, then wet it. Then tip it up. Makes a great broadhead target. Yes it is strenuous to tip, and you have to keep rocking it back and forth. But you end up with two finger removal of broadhead arrows.
@Sk0lzky
@Sk0lzky 4 года назад
I really don't like using sand as a target, it's very rough on the shafts. It has to be mentioned though that a barrel of sand covered with fabric and tipped over is the preferred short-medium range target described by a medieval archery manual for mamlukes - shooting arrows without fletching is supposedly really good for learning to shoot straight. PS Are those buckets really so expensive in the US? I have like 10 and never even had to pay because they often break and workers just leave them behind for the city cleaning service to pick up...

I've made a similar target, mine is an oblong frame made of scrap 12mm ply roughly 90cm x 60cm x 30cm with chicken wire stapled to the front and back faces and stuffed with pallet plastic before stapling squares of builder bag over the wire. Lasts for ages and enough to easily stop a 40lb recurve/ 125lb crossbow. The last one was made with scrap from the work skip and cost nothing but time!

You get two sizes and six colours. I put six of each colour on the target scattered around and try to get all of one colour, two into one then two singles then back to first. This is not only fun it also helps with making adjustments like you would if you missed a 3D or center of a target. Also making my homemade boss longer. I have just one question on what was the plastic you used to fill the target. Thanks again for sharing this

Yep, made these for years with plastic shopping bags. Have made a PVC frame/box 3’ x 3’ x 1.5’ with legs out of hardware store PVC plumbing parts covered with burlap and stuffed with bags. The only issue is if you shoot tight groups. Each arrow compresses the material and each successive arrow goes a little deeper until they start to punch holes out thru the back. They work well But even with plastic you want to put a rain cover/roof over them as they will collect water and get heavy and nasty...
