I got their GMAC motor and am very happy with it. The All Axle motor looks really good if you prefer front wheel hub motors over rear wheel ones. Grin is an awesome company.
@facelessvaper

Is the GMAC a geared brushless and not DD? with a through axle/"all axle" system? I too have a fondness for the less appreciated front hub!
@videosforcatsanddogs214
@videosforcatsanddogs214 3 года назад
The GMAC 8T i had was very good performance wise. But it overheated quite quickly and it only lasted 6000km before it self-destructed (axle bends over time, causing internal parts to rub and pieces fall apart. Typical Chinese quality. Also condensation is a huge problem if you live in a place with cold temps. When I opened the mac it had a lot of water trapped inside. Also the spokes cracked because of the weight of the hub motor. My dream bike has a mid-mounted direct drive hub motor that powers the rear wheel via an enclosed chain and only a single speed cog in the back. Normal mid-drives eat a chain and a cassette every 300 miles...

Those motors look really cool. I'll have to check them out. I've built a couple ebikes using the more generic version that you're showing. All the ebikes I've built I've always done a double torque arm setup. I just don't see it practical to assume any other setup would hold up even short-term and especially long-term. It's good to see there's a better option out there. Thanks for the video!

Good talk about weight and reaction torque issues. Not as much about the bearing and shaft which are also critical to me. My project is a quad bike which needs to fit through a 32" doorway. I like the Grin motor because it doesn't stick out past the tire (or looks that way). The quad needs a single side mount with a robust shaft which also cannot stick out past the tire on the outside. This video is 2 years old. I'd love to get an update where we are today and where the technology is going. Thanks for some really good info.

I’ve been using Goldenmotor Magic Pie v5 and Edge Motor’s on all my builds. I’ve done 5 so far with the oldest built in 2016 still going strong. I like a super clean cockpit so the only thing on the bars is the thumb throttle. Since it’s throttle only I can use any brakes. Some bikes like the oldest uses no torque arms because the kickstand on one side and the derailleur on the other side are heavy steel and so far never had a problem even at 25amps with 52v battery peaking at 58.8v. Another MagicPie-V5 needs 2 Grintech v4 torque arms ir it will spin I the rear dropouts. The edge motors are smaller and have had years with no trouble and no torque arms in aluminum rear dropouts. All these have strong regen and are about $400 usd from Goldenmotor.ca or Goldenmotor.bike. I love that the controller is built into the wheel so I get the cleanest build that’s a regular bike with a throttle for whenever you feel like using it. These are commuter type bikes so nothing fancy. I’d love to build something crazy but the costs add up quickly. Love the videos!!!

The C3Strom Bike I own has no Spokes, just a Rim. Less noise and maintenance regardless of it being heavier. There are definite pros and Cons but I just wanted something Stable and worry free, rugged and reliable. I only wish the Brake pads lasted longer and were more robust. I think there's so much room for new designs for Ebikes though. A dedicated Frame(bike) for that type of wheel wouldn't be too much to ask at all in my opinion. Even if it's just a matter of Sourcing Parts and Machining in a Batch Scale. Similar to what LunaCycles does. I'd buy all the Ebikes if I had the cash😝 Love it! The Video makes so much Sense in justifying design from what I can see and know about through my very limited experience. 👍😎🙏

Maybe not the best place to ask, I bought a Kickbike Cross Max 20D and was wanting to put a hub motor on the rear as I understand putting one of the suspension fork is frowned upon. Problem is, it's a strange hub width on the rear that is only about 72mm wide. Is that a hub motor that is out there that would fit? I'm sure I can source it out to 75mm if needed.

I was just reading about the Grin 'all-axle-hub-motor" last night, I have an old "Giant" frame that I converted over about12 years ago used a crystallite 407 in the rear wheel, worked ok when the SLA batteries would take a charge. The front suspension fork is an old "Judy Rock Shock" and I am thinking that if I can come up with the funds necessary, I should probably get a whole new package. The fork does have mounts for the disk calliper the rear brake is of course V-brake. It does seem that the folks at Grin have this motor nailed down, expensive yes but well worth it I figure.

I have a 48 volt 500 watt hub motor mounted in the front wheel of my two wheeled recumbent, and yes I use a torque arm, and I've never had a problem.. But then again, since it is a Direct Drive/Magnetic motor, it does not spin up as fast as say a geared hub motor. On the plus side I have a maximum load limit of 600 pounds, and since I often pull a trailer, it works just fine for me. Oh, and my parents live on top of the second biggest hill in the city I live in. A one mile uphill grade. Okay, so its a good motor, but what is the voltage and what is the wattage? And what is the load limit?

Great video with the needed details. The lighter weight GRIN hub = lower rotating mass and lower battery drain. Although it's a new bike this year, eventually I will replace my E-CELLS Super Monarch Crown front and rear motors with Grin Tech hub motors and controller. That they are made in Canada makes it just that much nicer. @@blackturbine If you have never stripped out an axle, spun one out, or had a fork fail, then you haven't experienced the problems that this fixes and it's likely not for you. Since we are already need to modify our frames to fit that hub design why is it a problem to make a new motor mount? Something like K mount for tubes whould be more than sturdy enough for 500w. Interesting stuff, thank you for sharing. I looked through the rest of your videos and couldn't find any follow up to downhill hubdrive bike? I'm interested in making an hub drive 24in mtb, any direction would be appreciated.

Thanks for the review, I see it this review was made a couple of years ago do you still feel the same about the hub? I'm considering building and e-bike and currently looking for a hub.

So I'm in the States and I have a worry that this may be the reason but I tried to activating the link and going to the website you suggested for these wheels, sorry hubs, and I got a non-existent page error. Was the page just down or is there another reason why I couldn't access the web page?

Search for all axle hub. They launched a new website and likely didn't redirect. I'll look at updating the link

Thanks, looks a good refinement of a direct drive hub motor, I would prefer a geared hub, but I know this is not everyones preference.
@HolmesHobbies

grin also has a very nice direct drive (without freewheel) they have worked on. Can't have the all axle without a full planetary redesign they probably won't tool up for soon, but if you bug them too maybe it will happen. I would also prefer a geared motor but will take the resilience and efficiency of the all axle in the mean time.

@@HolmesHobbies as the comedian said: "You can't have everything...where would you put it?" The smoothness and quiet operation of a gearless (direct drive) hub motor is truly a wonderful thing...The inherent lower torque of these motors is only a downside when starting out from a stop or confronted with a sudden uphill grade change. But these two conditions only happen or make up a very, VERY small percentage of the total ride time. For the quiet and smoothness I just LOVE my gearless/direct drive bike....if I'm bushwacking on dirt trails / single track I use my geared hub motored bike....face it, for EVERYTHING you need TWO bikes. It's as simple as that.

The Heinzmann RN 111 is even better. It is an oil-cooled geared hub motor from Germany. But it is more expensive.

Hey John, I'm trying to electrify a recumbent Delta Trike, the Sun EZ-3 USX HD (two wheels in the back, one in front). It needs to be really fast in that I will be using it for BikeJoring (riding with the Dogs). Can you, or would you, put two of the rear hub motors on the trike or would you use the X1 Pro Gen 2 or Stealth? Of course, bikejoring (dryland mushing) is all done on dirt. Let me know your thoughts, thanks in advance.

Thanks John! Random question: I have a 48V battery and a 48V controller. What would happen if I ran a 60V hub motor on this otherwise 48V system?
@HolmesHobbies

Typically it will just be slower. Much more fun to run a 48v hub on 60v. Or my more typical 36v hub on 48 to 72v.
