I've been doing the edge lit plexi since the late 90's. However, I did not have access to a new molded aluminum channel to house it so it was also rather tacky looking or made of wood. The advent of formed channel aluminum for this mod makes it well worth buying. Glad someone finally adapted it for acrylic.

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. For most of my projects I just hid it behind something. Furniture, plant, electric fireplace, center console etc. I don't want to put things behind the sheetrock (too much work) so options are somewhat limited. I did make a video on one option if you wanted to hide things and maybe didn't have something to put it behind: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ibRp6eeUwBA.html

@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 года назад
Thanks so much for watching! I'm sure its more than likely possible but I'm not sure if this product could be modded to work outdoors. The spot where the led strip is not very big and I doubt any waterproof led strips could fit it. But you could probably take this design idea and do something similar. All its essentially doing is having acrylic sit on top of the leds. You would just need to make a slightly larger spot for the waterproof leds to go before sitting acrylic on top. At some point I want to try doing some outdoor stuff so hopefully down the road I will have a better answer!

@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 года назад
Thanks so much! It isnt the cheapest but there's also nothing else out there like it that I've found. So when they were in stock (hopefully they will be back soon) I believe 2 sections of 4 feet each (8 total feet) were around 100 dollars. You then need to buy the led lights and power. I would estimate the total cost for everything would average to be around $130 - $140 dollars for every 8 feet of this that you buy.

@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 года назад
That would be so cool to do! I have not looked into external power supply's for controlling leds but i would assume it would be pretty much the same and not that hard to do. Just have to make sure the voltage matches the leds that your using. I do want to do a video in the future on external supply's for led light so hopefully I can get to that sooner rather than later!
@sote23
@sote23 2 года назад
Hi Chris, The electronic bike I will be doing this on has a rectangular frame and the area I will be attempting to do is aprprox 14 in wide, on each side, 4 inches high, and the top is 2 inches wide. I think I will try heating the acrylic and bending it around the frame making an upside down U shape.I know you said if it's below eye level to have the lights shining down. Do you think that bend will effect the led lights from shining down? It will be similar to how he is bending it in this video starting at the 11.04 mark. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VAi879kLA34.html They do make led strips with a usb connector on the end so it's easy to plug into most power banks that run on 5V. I will put the 5v power bank in a bike seat bag and run the wires to the power bank. I'm currently working on another project including acrylic for the wheels of the bike. Acrylic is cut in a round shape and painted with UV paint. As you know the glow in the dark effect doesn't last very long so to get around that you install black lights on the bike, shining down on the round acrylic strip that is in the spokes of the wheel. One on each side of the wheel. It creates a really nice effect which is not your typical bike wheel light. In the video he builds his own black lights to install on the bike, but he has a link in the description to the company he got the idea from. norilights.com/collections/nori-lights-new-wheel-illumination-system. So I'm going to use the acrylic strip in the spokes like he does in the video but I will use the Nori Lights black light pods on the bike as they run on 2032 lithium cells and I like the design As soon as I"m finished with the wheels, I will switch to the other project for body of the bike. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l6YRsurIQMQ.html

Do you know the thickness of the acrylic? Since this is just unavailable for a few months according to the questions on the store page, and the price, I would like to see a DIY version maybe. I just don't know where to begin with the acrylic and not using fancy channels like they have haha. Id love to see what could be done cheaply for large projects, I run an outdoor holiday light show that goes from the 4th of July, Halloween, and Christmas, and this could really be one heck of an upgrade around the windows or along the roof gutter. I am worried about cost though, but it is a work building and not a house, and this could really push a futuristic neon vibe all year if handled right. I know these aren't outdoor but if the lights themselves are fine and the acrylic can handle the sun, it would be awesome. The effect these boards do is just so out there that I might be becoming a touch obsessed haha.

Thanks so much for watching and do you have any video of your lightshow?! I love watching stuff like that! So the acrylic is 1/4 inch thick. I'm currently trying to do a diy version of it which I will hopefully have done sooner rather than later. The challenging part so far has been trying to make the housing for the acrylic. The machine cut perfect aluminum is hard to duplicate lol. For sure a lot of possibilities with this type of setup so hopefully it comes in stock soon and hopefully there will be other options in the future to help drive prices down!

@@ChrisMaherDIY This might be an option for some and a "no go" for others based on their intended use. Say you adjust the aluminum part that houses the LED strip and instead of having it run up and over the opposing edge of the acrylic, you have it made with a "C" type channel and then route the acrylic edge to slide into that channel? Unsure how it would impact the light diffusion as a small portion above the LEDs would have the edges of the aluminum....but thinking outside the box. Would be less sturdy, but would significantly cut down material cost (on aluminum).
@ChuckmaNorris
@ChuckmaNorris 2 года назад
I bought similar but it was just edge lit aluminium channel. I had my own glass. The leds I had were RGBIC 5050 IP65 but it didn't fit with the silicone so I took it off. It fits now BUT even though these Aluminium channels are anodized aluminium which stops the metal from coming conductive, it scares the crap out of that maybe that maybe the connectors or led pins might touch the metal and it will still conduct and then BOOM. And I can't tape these down, so they are loose. They work fine..i tested it but not going to keep it on for long.

I'm just having a hard time finding a good way to make the housing (I want to keep it as small and thing profile as possible) I just got some clear acrylic (i think 3/8ths of an inch) and sanded it down on both sided and it looks good using an led strip that has 100 leds per meter. You can use the wires that are included but you might run into issues since the led strip that I got is shorter than the product. So the leds will only go about 75% of the way. Instead of acrylic it would be thin material wall, but I just saw a guy do it successfully with Christmas light bulb covers, so it does shine thru and diffuse. Yeah its a bummer that they are not available in more regions and I think they have not been available on amazon in the us either for a very long time. Rumor is they will have them back in stock in November! Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. Thats a great question and thats a lot of LEDS! Here is some information on the recomended number of leds to use with the esp devices: kno.wled.ge/features/multi-strip/#:~:text=For%20good%20performance%2C%20you%20can,a%20total%20of%204000%20LEDs. But I have not done a project that big so i'm not sure what might be best. Maybe someone else reading the comments might have some suggestions and can chime in!

It looks like we are out of luck on this one. I send a request to the Muzata Support and the responded with the following: "I'm sorry this product is currently discontinued and we may have to stop selling this product."

Thats such a bummer! Hopefully they are just having a delay in production and they will be back soon. Or hopefully some other company comes out with something similar!

Man that's a bummer! They must be sold out :( Hopefully they get a refresh soon. I also just went to the Canadian storefront and could not find them either. I'll reach out to Muzata and see if they have any update! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I'm for sure at some point going to try doing a DIY version of this. Hopefully it will turn out half as good lol!

The manufacturer says that 10 mm wide light strips will not fit, but the one in the links is 10mm wide. Has the product changed? or are they just wrong?
@ChrisMaherDIY

The 10mm wide ones fit perfectly. I tried 12mm ones and those are too big. Thanks for watching and great question!

Any idea what specific acrylic these are made of? I know there are optic grades and edge reflecting options but not sure what you would call this one. I'm just imagining custom lengths and shapes.
