/ rmspeltz We installed a Bar Bar A no freeze no electric needed automatic waterer for horses and cattle on our farm...this is really the way to go if you don't mind the work to hook it up to ones well
The Best; I have been installing these locally where I live in Utah . for 8 years.. even with the cold weather. never a problem a very well built unit. I have 2 on my own property for my steers and my horses..
Great video. Amazing how they were able to drill the hose path so accurately. Here, we have so many rocks, it would be impossible. They make shoring protection for a reason. If there was a cave-in, your wife would be dead before you could have got her out of there. We are installing a system like yours and this video really helps. Thanks again and be careful out there.
I love my Bar-Bar-A. I have had it for 13 years. Very little maintenance. My install was way easier than this. We just dug a trench to the waterline. We were not able to run below the frost line so we just sleeved the waterline. Never have had it frozen. I love it.
good to know thank you we just got one and we also wont be able to bury our line very deep because its solid lava rock. I will probably sleeve this one as well.
Interesting technology. I never though of using tires. I've used two 5 gallon pails with bottoms cut off stacked/ stuffed with R30 fiberglass insulation bcuz mice hate it. At the dairy i work they have a fancy California designed livestock fountain set up here in Mn. The freestall barn has six 6' x 6' frost free all poured concrete on site water fountains, the water comes up from the bottom via 3" pvc, that comes from two stock tanks with 1" float valves one for low level and one for high level 100 yards away. The engineers who built it figured out the correct ground level to locate the stock tanks to make it all work. One of the problems with dairy cows is we walk them through the copper sulfate foot baths everyday so they think it's okay to stand in the water fountains on hot days.
We disagree, You can direction drill in a Richie too, and either of these can be trenched in also to save that cost. The problem with Richie is simple they cost monthly to operate monthly all winter, the heaters fail after 4-5 years and need replacement, there occasionally develops slime mold in the yellow interior of the tanks since seldom cleanable and the install of pvc through a poured concrete pad is no easy install either unless you just drop a Richie onto the dirt and let it sink into the mud. Also the drain hole is now in place for over two years on our farm, cattle and horse on it and no issues, I will be this spring replacing our farms last Richies, I will pull it out of service, lose the $30/month winter electric bill on it which in Minnesota is about $180 yr expense per Richie and save with second one of these none electric, fresh water BAR BAR A's. To date I have on two different farms installed 4 of these in Minnesota saving the cost of 1500watt heat bills (180$ each yr) and failed heater elements since 2012.
Good video but the supply list writing in blue is extremely hard to read. Could you change it to white or put it in a text box. You could also add a text box that says that a supply list is in the description. Just some thoughts. Thanks for the video.

NOT.. our county is one of the smallest in Ohio, population and incomes wise, but fluoridated it is...... glad you can handle the wells, pumps and household pressures without so much hassles.. We could maybe do it with our storm water system that handles lots of water... about 900gal in the subsurface storage [constructed wetlands processing for greywater originally, now converted to stormwater]...... EPA tested cleaner [3 times in all seasons] than the creeks here but unfriendly 'health' people nixed our independence.. maybe we could find another video on using the stormwater wetlands storage, if anyone has done it..... it sure would make nice watering possibilities for the cats in our rescue working... ttyl and best as always
Great video....but nobody should be in that hole without steel enclosure for anti cave in. We had a friend who died in a trench just like yours. Better to be safe.
Love the video! I’m considering getting one for my horses here in Minnesota too. do you know how well they work with well water or would I need to get a water softener to be able to use this my water has a lot of iron in it
no sure on water soft deal since I rather they not have soft water, but our has well with lot iron in it and it does great. only issues we have with it is if close to the hay supply the goats get little hay in it and flood bowl occasionally other then that works great for the horses and beef and wee do check them daily to make sure clean and running with simple tap to make sure works
I installed one and my son installed two. They work but, I have high water table and the shaft was flooded 3/4 full. It didn’t like it. My son is in clay and the same thing happens over time. The valve sticks some times. At -40 everything freezes. I went as far as installing 2 in foam 12 inches below ground and 4 ft square. It still froze. This is in northern Minnesota. It worked 11 months out of the year.

Hi this morning here in Central Minnesota its -32 below lol and yes they are all three working. The only issue we have had is on the cattle one they have one time gotten enough hay on the muzzles and into the bowl that it once slowed the draining of the water in winter and we had to blow dryer the water basin 10min to room the hay frozen to the bottom, that was awhile ago, since then we walk up daily and check it by pressing it and see if run and go down. I also have had two richies and over time replaced them and in winter twice i had the red balls freeze down in the open position and hence we always checked those daily too. I no longer have the richies since then sucked electric like crazy in the winter and replacing the heating elements every 4-5yrs sucked lol
The valve is pretty deep into the tube and all winter if worked perfect the lowest temp up here was -33 below and only thing was water that day did freeze once came up pretty quick in the bowel but the next day was only -10 and it was thawed off, we really like it. Did you put a valve off your main water line where it connects to waterer hose? I’m installing one of these right now. I have a 1” blue line looks similar to yours.
Shawn for us when we hooked it up to the blue line there is the off at the bottom of the water, also at the other end of the blue line it goes into the house to connect the main tank and yes we did but shut off there incase we want to kill the whole line, hope this helps
We are installing one today in central Michigan. Do you pull the waterline up through the tires and make the connection inside the tires? It looks like you did this with your first installation but I couldn’t tell on your second installation video. Thank you!
I have done both, but learned that if u ever need to remove the water line its easier if it on the outside of the tire to dig down and get it. On side note makes now difference if you taking the whole thing out i guess lol. I never also had connection fail either;)
Most self filling waterers are richie style or types like that all require electrical hookup in site for the heater elements to work, hence all winter long they are drawing the electrical current. You are right you have to have water source and in some cases that makes one pump water, some people use windmills, others use shallow ground pumps, I use my house well water and that pump over 200ft away in my house will use power to run my home yes. These work great by the way, -20 below right now and it works great with no electrical heater needed.
ReefDVMs thank you for the update! I have an old windmill site that I've been debating hooking a frost free nose pump up to, the pump runs off cow power basically. no power or heater needed... its a pricy set up to start, but after that none. your set up looks great!
This has been a nicely filmed how to. You did do one potentially dangerous/ fatal thing in your project, and that was going into that hole without any side wall retention materials. Our son used to work for a company that was shiftless about installing steel boxes in sewer trenches. If a wall were to slough off while your pretty wife was shoveling the dirt at the bottom, you could have been a widower. A four foot waterline trench requires a steel box, as a person can suffocate if the dirt is high enough to prevent chest expansion. This is meant to be a thought provoking commentary about a simple thing that can change many lives, when things take an unexpected turn. I had a close call in a field drainage trench the dropped around a half ton of dirt just after I had gone down to reconnect a coupler that had pulled apart.
I gave you a thumbs down because you don't know how to run a skid steer the way you was moving both sticks is not how you do it that is a good way to cause your transmission or your final drives to break all u have to do it is 1 of your sticks side to side it would work better it cheaper to fix a hydraulic calenders than it is your main drive but other than that great video
