I really enjoy watching your videos. I am in the middle of setting up my first turtle aquarium. 40 gallon breeder. I went with a fluval 407, snagged it for half price on a black friday sale. I am making all of the decorations including a “natural” basking area made from parts of a dead sycamore tree as well as a cave made from the same tree. I also built a tank topper with a viewing window across the entire front of the tank. The tank is cycling now and I will be getting a southern painted at the end of February. I have watched pretty much all of your videos as inspiration for some of the design.
Oh Turtle Girl!!! Thank you so much for your “talk dummy to me” way of explaining this stuff!!! I’m doing my best to give my RES Turtle the best clean environment! The way you explain it all makes so much more sense than most do!
Thank you so much for this video. My wife and I are trying to figure out the best filter for our red ear slider. The cheap ones we have been going with just dont do a good job. Your knowledge and delivery of info is perfect and easy to understand for a turtle rookie like me.
Oxygen is important to the biological performance of any filter. Oxygen simply comes from the air. My recommended way to keep oxygen levels in the water high is to create a waterfall with the pump discharge, so even the canister filter discharge should be positioned to splash into the water. Also, you will see the turtles and other critters spend more time near the bottom of well aerated or oxygen rich tanks, because they can draw the oxygen from the water.
I have nothing against hang on back filters but when it comes to turtles you are going to be better off with a canister. Our turtle is now going on 15 years old, got her when she was a baby. I use Fluval FX6's on her tank and it does an awesome job, I have nothing but good things to say about the FX6. When it comes to turtles more is always better. Frankie went from being the size of a quarter to the size of a small dinner plate. If someone said to me I'm setting up a turtle tank, what filter should I use? I would say start with an FX6. If they say their tank is too small for an FX6, then I would say your tank is to small for turtles. Start with a bigger tank with an FX6. I have two Fx6's on my turtle tank and that's for one turtle. If your going to get a turtle, know what your getting into or don't get a turtle. That's my advice. Cheers all! P.S. Frankie's tank is 250 gallons and Frankie is a Red Eared Slider. Her tank also has an out of water basking area for her to bask and eat, she can literally climb out of her tank if she wants to. Frankie would bust that tank behind her in the video. When I got Frankie as a baby I knew she was going to get big and I knew she would live for a long time. When I got her I started her in a 100 gallon tank then when she was about a year and a half I up graded her tank to the 250. Oh Frankie is also the solo occupant of her tank, she will kill anything that gets put in with her including other turtles.
@@TheTurtleGirl Oh, no problem. That was a good video, you were right on point with your views on filters and their pros and cons. So Thank You for putting credible information out there, a better informed public is always a win for the hobby. Keep up the good work. Cheers!
May God bless ye, son, for telling the facts regarding turtles! I found six baby Florida Peninsula Cooters in the street down from my house. I'm trying to raise them to a safe size before release in the wild. You and Frankie are an inspiration and guide for what I need to do regarding filtration. Much obliged!
Thanks to you and your tips with feedings and filter system after having 3 turtles of different sizes (they were a rehome situation, but get along fine and were kept like that before) in a 75 gallon tank (saving for a 180+ tank for 2 of them), for about 8 months now, my water parameters are still amazing and I've never had issues other than tannin filled water/slightly softer water which actually helped the shell rot condition I got them in. Thank you so much for all your tips and info and can't wait to see more. Fluval cannister filters are a god send.
Canister filters for the win! I never have power filters, I always used a in the tank mechanical submersible filter, and getting a canister filter was SUCH a great investment
I'm going to set up my new turtle tank with 2 hob filters. I like the idea of easy cleaning. I generally will alternate each month which filter to clean. My tank is 40 gal and I only have one male painted turtle.
I like the quiet of the canister but not the water mess as you detach and change it. I like the ease of the HOT filter but the constant waterfall just has to have the water kept higher to decrease the loudness of the fall.
I use plants to quiet it down, hand some vine plants (fake or real) over the top of the filter, and down into the water. The waterfall will start trickling down the plant instead of hitting the water hard😊
Team Canister all day. I just got my son a Cumberland Slide and the Fluval 207 canister filter, it’s great! Super quiet. Also you channel is amazing, so informative, helped us prepare for Vincent’s (the turtle) arrival.
Team Canister filter team here ever since I switched from my hang on for my turtle tank to the canister so far I’m loving it almost a week in and using the canister and I’m glad that I won’t have to change my turtles water tank as often as before. The big maintenance will have to be the filter itself but I’m glad about easy the process It will be for changing the water tank. I will still of course clean some of the decorations
I had problems with my tankbnnitially as i needed to clean every 3-5days. Until i re alled in ur videos u showed feeding them off their tank and returning them after. I wanted to replace my filter but not inly that its expensive, it could drasticaly up mu electric bill. Im looking still for a solar powered high power pump filter. Im glad u have this video to show pros and cons.
I want to use a 100 gallon stock tank for my RES, but I can't use a canister filter because the stock tank will sit on the floor. Do you think 2 of the AquaClear (60-110 gal) power filters would be enough? And do you think it's possible to add a tube if the inlet pipe doesn't reach the water level in the stock tank?
I just run 2ea Fluval 70 HOB, on my 40G breeder tank along with a sponge filter to keep the water moving. I use black sand for substrate and black background. I have a small spiny soft shell and a small western painted turtle.
I’m using a Freshwater Trickle Sump Tank with overflow baffle up top. Sumps add water to aquarium, oxygenates the water, and easily comes out with the clearest turtle water I’ve ever had.
do u have any suggestionns of filters for a 20g tank because i cant find any good ones and i need one that i can pick or one that i dont need to fill up the whole tank
I have 2 FX6 on my current 125G turtle tank. At first I had a FX6 and had a Topfin Pro series, the strongest one they had because I wanted variety. Later, i decided to trade it in for another FX6. I have 2 HOB Fluvals on a 40 gallon, a Fluval 110 and a 50g one. I gotta say, despite the work you gotta do and the $$$, when it comes to turtles, you gotta get a FX6. All the junk that comes with the starter kits is a waste of $$$. I ended up using the starter kit stuff for fish but most is just in a box in reserve in case my main equipment fails temporarily. If you are reading this comment and are new to turtles, do yourself a favor and buy the biggest, baddest possible toys. You'll end up doing it later anyway. Get a big tank, get big filter(s). Always be ready with triple or quadruple the power of what your tank size is. Never buy the starter kits. Never buy small or cheap equipment for turtles.
After almost having a nervous breakdown trying to get my Penn-Plax filter to prime fir my 50 gallon turtle tank (pond line), I gave up and shelled out the $$$ for the fluval f4…sooooo worth if!!
Just wondering if you got your $ back from penn plax. Had same pumping issue, known defective part sent, and still not working. Won’t return calls, email address on warranty list doesn’t work. Are we just out $171? Anybody got any ideas what to do?
Does the canister filter have to sit somewhere below the water line or below the entire tank? For example If the filter is 1 foot high but I have a tub that has 3 feet of water will it work sitting on the floor beside the tank
Wow, you are so wonderful! What a huge help for helping me to truly understand what is best for my turtle. I am upgrading my RES to a 40 gallon tank soon and will purchase the canister filter and some odds and ends via your affiliate link so you get a kickback. Your video on the tank cleaning helped me to understand how to change water properly and the benefits of bacteria in the filter. Thank you!!!
I have a tetra whisper tank and it goes inside the tank with waterfall and all. I change the filter every one or two days. I was thinking about getting a new filter for my res turtle because it's a filter someone gave me when they gave me the turtle itself. Wondering if you can do a video on these types of filters please?
what kind of filter would you guys recommend for a 20 gal tank. I currently have a ZILLA filter but it just makes my turtles water cloudy and smelling in just 3 days. Please help!
i have a red eared slider turtle and currently have a 25 gallon tank, I bought the aqua clear filter (70 gallon) but after one week it became really foggy and dirty. I am planning to upgrade her tank once she’s a bit bigger but I’m afraid her current filter won’t keep up… any recs?? I’m on my 3rd filter and none seem to keep up :(
What size tank are you going to upgrade to? I would recommend a fluval fx6 filter if it’s a 75 gallon or bigger. It will keep the tank clean for at least 11 months.
if you just set the tank up, it's normal for the tank to get a bit cloudy as the tank cycles and establishes. After the upgrade, I'd def a suggest a canister filter. You could even get a smaller canister filter and use that in conjunction with the aquaclear 70 you already have!
Awesome vid, oh and please please please please do a video on leopard gecko names bc I'm getting a leopard gecko a week from this Saturday and I'm horrible at coming up with names just please do it anytime, anyway I LOVE your vids keep up the great work
I'm considering switching to the Penn Plax small two-tray canister model for my grand-daughter's red-eared slider. There seems to be varying media options. What would you recommend for her (or any turtle's tank? I currently use the Whisper-Jet hang-on models, (two of them,) and they just don't keep the tank very clean.
I try to do a coarse filter sponge, a medium sponge, and then some bio rings or other form of biological media. If there's still space, a polishing/fine pad would be nice :)
Ok serious question in all of the turtle groups online say that putting pathos in Your tank or in the filter is toxic for your turtle. Is this true ? What plants do you recommend??? I think I've seen pathos in your tanks before?
Hello, I have a Fluval 307 filter. I just recently bought all new filters for it as it has been close to a year since I bought the Fluval 307. Do I change these out 1 at a time or can I change them all at once? I am talking about all the sponges and the carbon filters not the bio rings. I figured I need to change the Bio Rings last to keep good media? If I spread them out how long should I wait? A week, a month??Thanks!
I rinse them out, and don't ever really change them out/throw them away until it's literally falling apart. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ob_3KxwIJrM.html here's a vid that you may find helpful :DD
hi there, great vid. Wanted to check with you, with the smell that could be emitting from the Power Filter as i see there is quite a significant amount of mold forming. Do you have issues of smell with them being indoor? Thanks again!
Hi turtle girl. Love your videos. Question: I noticed the water color in the tank behind you and mine looks just like that. Is there a way to have crystal clear water for turtles or should I accept this as normal. I've had my turtle for about a year and we're up to a 55 gallon tank. I have a marineland emperor pro 450 90 gallon and another hob 40 gallon filter. Help! Lol
I really enjoy your videos for all the information and advice. I currently have a Red Eared Slider in a 40 gallon breeder with a canister filter. Could you share more insight on output and input placement to get the best circulation? Are spray bars a good idea? Where should I aim the output with a spray bar or the normal output to get the maximum flow? Thanks!
Off topic for a min. Just curious what happen to your turtle topper? I was thinking of getting one. I have my setup like yours currently but was thinking of getting that top.
Thank you! I know I NEED to upgrade my turtle's filter. His water gets nasty FAST! I am leaning towards canister for sure! Also, what do you recommend for decorations when your turtle eats everything in sight? I bought some wood from the lps but it made the water stink!
Hi, my family is getting a baby yellow belly slider next month and I am going through almost all of your videos! I have researched a lot hut your video is the most helpful 😁 One quick question tho, do babies need heat emmiter at night? I know they need day/night cycle, so no lights, but I feel like they could be cold at night and I am getting different answer to this. Also, is it better to start with 2inch shallow water than above, to prevent from drowning? Some ppl said babies are not a good swimmer and lung is not fully developed so deeper water can tire him out. Any thoughts on these? Thank you so much!!
I would not worry about a heat emitter at night. Provided the tank is indoors and it remains room temp at night or even a little cooler, that's natural to what they would experience in the wild. As far as depth, it kind of just depends on how you want to go about it. I have a vid on that here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sruPWx0MOyw.html
So I’m getting an eastern musk turtle and I’m wondering if you have any recommendations on anything. But this really helped so thank you very much!! 💜🐢💜🐢💜🐢💜🐢💜🐢💜🐢💜
Hey… excellent explanation on filters. I’m a fish keeper, not yet a turtle keeper, but I do have a question on filtration. You never mentioned sponge filters… is it an option with turtles? Otherwise I’m already using the Oase Biomaster Thermo canister filters for a couple of fish tanks. I’m one of those that hates that falling water sound from HOBs.
I had one sponge filter along with 2 canisters. The sponge got tore up by the turtles. They didn't eat it. But there were sponge pieces everywhere. I took it out. Would not recommend.
i dont keep turtles but this is how i grade my filters sponge for bettas and tiny fish internals for low stocking and fish with a lower bioload depending on the brand and size hob idk because i have never used them canister for bigger fish, cichlids, overstocked tanks and probably turtles as they create a lot of waste
Hello! I have a question! My turtle is a red ear slider and he is pretty aggressive and bites a lot for any turtle experts may I have some tips to bond and make sure that he gets the care he needs! And maybe calm him down a bit!
I’ve had my turtles 🐢 for a little over a year and I’ve purchased over 7 hang on filters and it’s becoming a headache soon as I try to clean my tank and the filter it doesn’t work I’m ready to upgrade
Nice content! Thank you. Btw, can you tell me the dimensions of the tank behind you? I got 4 aquatic turtles and had no idea about how to take care of them, so now I figured that I need a lot of space for them to be healthy and yours seem to have 3-4 turtles in it. Hope to hear from you, thank you, and great job.
hi! mine is a 75 gallon...they're musk turtles though, so all under 4inches and pretty small. Depending on your species of turts (any sliders?) you may need something more like a 120 or 150 gallon!
You give wonderful explanations. Do you have suggestions for the type of filtration needed for a turtle habitat (not aquarium)- essentially large tub set into a deck for lounging. We have an EHEIM currently but have run into difficulties getting it going after cleaning. I would appreciate any suggestions!
I would say a canister filter...but frankly I have little experience in the realm of tubs and ponds! DanTheTurtleMan might have some ideas for you though :) best of luck!
Which canister filter will you suggest for a 20 gallon tank? Fluval 07 Series Performance Canister Filter for Aquariums Size: 107 or Marineland Magniflow Canister Filter for Aquariums, Fast Maintenance
@@TheTurtleGirl so i have a 8 month old turtle in a 20 gallon tank which is more than half filled. I recently saw a video where you mentioned regarding over filtration. I hope the Fluval 107 wouldn’t overfilter?
I'm using a Fluval 407 canister with a 40 gal tank. My local pet store thinks my water flow is too high. Watching your videos 245 gph seems overkill. Very cloudy water and pet store thinks I need a smaller filter.
You forgot the best part about HOB filters! You can stick pothos into the HOB filters where the turtles can’t bite! That’s extra natural filtration that keeps your water clean!
I'm here because my res turtle was moved to a 75 gallon tank she is a huge res turtle. I want the best for her. Finding that the filter isn't doing great its good enough but not great so I'm trying to find out what's best for the tank
I just have to use a reptofilter that suctions on inside of tank. I feel like the hot filters have the water levels too high. An a canister filter is too costly.
🆘Hey, I NEED HELP. I have a read eared slider(male)and an African side neck(female). Both have lived together for 3 years. Recently though the male slider started trying to mate with the female(stressing her out) and when attempts failed he would get frustrated and nip at her feet which is a big issue. I had them separated for a half a month to upgrade into a 100g tub(turtle pond), because I was told it can cause behavioral changes that might help the situation. For a day I had the female get comfortable in the tub before adding the male. Things was going well for about 5hrs, then he started to exhibit the same behaviors. I don't want to give him away bu it's starting to die down to that option. Can u pls or anyone that sees this throw some suggestions at me. I'm starting to loose hope of ever getting them back into the same enclosure again🆘
Team canister filter in fact watching your video of you cleaning the canister made me get one, I wished I could video chat with you cause I really need help with my tank for my red eared sliders (Friend) and (Jade)
We’re having issues with our tank getting so ugly so fast. The tubing is all brown the glass is all white and foggy from the heat lamp and there’s so much poop that just doesn’t get picked up. I wanted to buy an actual turtle tank with basking cage at the top but my bf wanted the cheaper route and bought a fish tank with the basic light hitting the glass and fogging it up. Then he said I need to stop watching all my RU-vid videos cause I wanted a good filter so I settled for a $50 one that just doesn’t pick up or filtrate enough.. $400 put into a new tank basking area lamp and filter and none of it is working.. I have 3 baby red sliders in a 55 gallon tank sitting in about 30 gallons of water… idk what to do?
hmmm...I'd try to get on a schedule with water changes, and also fill the tank all the way if possible. More water volume and more cleaning will help improve the water quality. Also try feeding the turtles outside the tank if possible!
interesting! maybe I'll do a video on smell in the future... generally though, my tanks have never had a smell. Might mean you need to take a look at your water change schedule too....or make sure you're cleaning your filter?
